Sutta Nipata: The Group of Discourses , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 341min
It is widely accepted that the Sutta Nipata contains 'the earliest recorded version' of the Buddha's teaching. It is an anthology of poetry and prose - 70 titled suttas of varied instruction and temperament arranged in five chapters. At the start are two of its most famous suttas: The Snake, in which the actions of the practising bhikkhu approaching liberation is likened to a snake that 'leaves its old worn-out skin'; and The Rhinoceros Horn, which expounds the virtue of solitude for those with serious spiritual intent. But this anthology is full of character and characters: the Buddha condemns caste (which still blights Indian society); he engages with a varied host of questioners, from householders and brahmins to spiritual seekers, clarifying their confusions and exhorting them to pursue a path of wisdom and compassion. Uncompromising and ancient in tone, it offers a flavour of the very early days of the Buddha's teaching and the India of his time. K. R. Norman's authoritative translation ensures clarity and immediacy of comprehension. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jinananda. Feminism's Empire (eBook, PDF)
Feminism's Empire investigates the complex relationships between imperialisms and feminisms in the late nineteenth century and demonstrates the challenge of conceptualizing "pro-imperialist" and "anti-imperialist" as binary positions. By intellectually and spatially tracing the era's first French feminists' engagement with empire, Carolyn J. Eichner explores how feminists opposed-yet employed-approaches to empire in writing, speaking, and publishing. In differing ways, they ultimately tied forms of imperialism to gender liberation. Among the era's first anti-imperialists, French feminists were enmeshed in the hierarchies and epistemologies of empire. They likened their gender-based marginalization to imperialist oppressions. Imperialism and colonialism's gendered and sexualized racial hierarchies established categories of inclusion and exclusion that rested in both universalism and ideas of "nature" that presented colonized people with theoretical, yet impossible, paths to integration. Feminists faced similar barriers to full incorporation due to the gendered contradictions inherent in universalism. The system presumed citizenship to be male and thus positioned women as outsiders. Feminism's Empire connects this critical struggle to hierarchical power shifts in racial and national status that created uneasy linkages between French feminists and imperial authorities.- Shop: buecher

Where Is Baby Edward?: A Bedtime Story Designed to Help Children Get to Sleep: Baby Edward Stories, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 12min
This story is designed to get your children to sleep at bedtime. Baby Edward becomes lost, and the other elephants go on a journey to find him. Children are drawn in to the rhythmic and melodic nature of the adventure, and as the journey unfolds, so do the tricks to lull the listener to sleep. In this story, the first of the series, the elephants go across the Savanna, through the marshes, up a river, and through a waterfall to a cave beyond to try and find the lost Baby Edward. Immersive audio with sound effects and environmental ambience engages children. The audiobook uses a number of established techniques such as repeated melodic phrases (read in hushed, gentle tones), characters that yawn (studies have shown this to be contagious especially with children), and the occasional sound that is similar to “white noise” (like a waterfall or radio interference), which is widely used as a sleep aid for babies and likened to sounds experienced in the womb. Always start at the beginning of the story, and if all goes to plan, you won't reach the end. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lara A. King. Nazaré (eBook, ePUB)
Nazaré tells the story of a peasants' revolt in the polyglot city of Balaal. The story begins with a miracle. A homeless boy sees a whale washed up on the beach. He alerts the local fishermen, and soon the whole town is trying and failing to push it back into the ocean. With just the boy left to accompany the whale now in its dying throes, a freak wave pulls the creature back into the sea. This is an omen. Change is coming. The boy and the washerwoman who adopts him cobble together a ramshackle army of fishermen, shopkeepers, lapsed nuns, anarchist bats, and an itinerant camel. They attempt to end the reign of the dictator who rules over Balaal. Their attempt involves pitched battles, farcical trials, rooftop escapes, and sun-parched wanderings in the wilderness. Looming over the disparate cast of characters is the legend of the giant wave-Nazaré-that will one day annihilate everyone and everything in the city. Nazaré is an adventure and a parable that pits the oppressed against the oppressor. The work has been likened to that of Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa in its use of language, its inventiveness, its humor, and its examination of issues of justice.- Shop: buecher

A People's History of Science: Miners, Midwives, and "Low Mechanicks" , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1055min
We all know the history of science that we learned from grade school textbooks: how Galileo used his telescope to show that the earth was not the center of the universe; how Newton divined gravity from the falling apple; how Einstein unlocked the mysteries of time and space with a simple equation. This history is made up of long periods of ignorance and confusion, punctuated once an age by a brilliant thinker who puts it all together. These few tower over the ordinary mass of people, and in the traditional account, it is to them that we owe science in its entirety. This belief is wrong. A People's History of Science shows how ordinary people participate in creating science and have done so throughout history. It documents how the development of science has affected ordinary people, and how ordinary people perceived that development. It would be wrong to claim that the formulation of quantum theory or the structure of DNA can be credited directly to artisans or peasants, but if modern science is likened to a skyscraper, then those 20th-century triumphs are the sophisticated filigrees at its pinnacle that are supported by the massive foundation created by the rest of us. ungekürzt. Mother Teresa: Get Inspired by Real Heroes , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 140min
If ever there was a beacon of humility in the badlands of human suffering, it was best exemplified in the the selfless Catholic nun, Mother Teresa. Born to Albanian parents in the Ottoman Empire, Mother Teresa traveled to Ireland and joined the Sisters of Loreto order as a teenager with the intention of dedicating herself to missionary work. Claiming to belong to the whole world irrespective of her skin color, she traveled to India and began teaching in school. It was the large heart of Mother Teresa which allowed her to vividly express the empathetic nature of her savior, wherein every poor person she helped could be likened to touching the heart of Jesus. This faithful service saw the expansion of her Missionaries of Charity congregation across the globe. Today there continues to be volunteers - inspired by her example of the Lord's calling - in the Mission she founded working with orphans, lepers, and the dying. She proved to be a woman of undaunted passion and obedience to a higher nature striving against impossible odds. Exemplifying that positive change is an individual responsibility that will eventually benefit the immediate society and world at large. And thus was revealed a Saint...and a Mother to those most in need. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Evie Irwin. Positively Resilient: 5½ Secrets to Beat Stress, Overcome Obstacles, and Defeat Anxiety , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 407min
What is resilience? Is it just a fancy way to characterize a hopeful, upbeat personality, or a positive spirit of never giving up? In Positively Resilient, Doug Hensch aims to take a different look at what turns out to be a much richer and deeper concept than just bouncing back from adversity. Martin Seligman, considered the father of positive psychology, has likened resilience to clearing the weeds from a rose garden, which can reach its potential only if the weeds are kept in check. Human beings face "weeds" of their own: layoffs, health issues, stock-market crashes, threats of terrorism, and natural disasters are all too common. Americans are busier, more stressed, and more anxious and depressed than they were during the Great Depression. Based on more than 40 years of research and 20 years of professional experience, Positively Resilient will help you discover: How any efforts toward personal change can be enhanced using several simple steps That being psychologically flexible is critical to thinking through the mountain of information we receive every day How to incorporate mindfulness and curiosity into your life How our emotions help us to navigate our environment Why true support and connection are critical to being resilient. ungekürzt.
