It was the best time in Jacob Hudson's life. He was about to marry Abigail Rodgers, his best friend and love of his life. Together they would build their dream home and start a family. Jacob's carpentry business was successful, and he was closer than ever to his siblings. Life was good. 1911, a time when Sir Robert Laird Borden was prime minister and King George V was on the throne, life in the Canadian Prairies wasn't easy, but Jacob was no stranger to hard work, and integrity was his middle name. Jacob and Abigail's happiness wasn't everlasting. An abrupt illness, extreme weather, unexpected debt - each obstacle more difficult than the last. Jacob was determined and trusted in the Lord, but not everyone had his faith. While Jacob thinks he can help anyone who is in need, he comes face to face with the harsh facts when he, too, has to rely on others for help. How will Jacob overcome the things he cannot change? When his faith is tested, can he continue to trust that God will never fail? Follow Jacob and Abigail and their family back to Abbington Pickets through early 20th-century Saskatchewan and their intriguing story of a carpenter who followed his heart in a small community only to find more than he expected. ungekürzt. Westboro Baptist Church has earned an unforgettable reputation for virulently anti-gay pickets. Westboro has even stooped to picketing funerals to spread their hateful message. Most people respond to this hate with more hate of their own, but through poetry, this book calls us to respond with understanding instead. This work strives to challenge common reactions and to stimulate new thoughtful dialogue. As Deepak Chopra stated, "You can not change a problem at the level of consciousness that created it," and thus, if we seek to change Westboro's behavior, we need to take the high road ungekürzt. A memoir of childhood Christmases on the South Dakota plains. By turns sweet and comic, sentimental and serious, Joseph Bottum's Dakota Christmas is an instant Christmas classic. In this beautifully written account of the mad joys and wild emotions of Christmas for children, Bottum captures the universal spirit of the season even while he recounts his memories with a sharp particularity that brings them alive for listeners."Her hair was the same thin shade of gray as the weather - beaten pickets of the fence around her frozen garden," he writes of one chance Christmas encounter. "She had a way with horses, and she was alone on Christmas Eve. There is little in my life I regret as much as that I would not stay for just one cookie, just one cup of tea.""Joseph Bottum is one of America’s most gifted writers, with a perfect ear and a matchless style," the essayist Andrew Ferguson notes of Dakota Christmas. And "to watch him deck the halls with his customary humor and generosity of spirit is glad tidings indeed - guaranteed to make your Yuletide bright." "Families have always loved brief Christmas classics," adds Michael Novak. "Joseph Bottum's Dakota Christmas is such a classic." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Brian Troxell.
