Megan is a suburban soccer mom who once upon a time walked on the wild side. Now she's got two kids, a perfect husband, a picket fence, and a growing sense of dissatisfaction. Ray used to be a talented documentary photographer, but at age forty he finds himself in a dead-end job posing as a paparazzo pandering to celebrity-obsessed rich kids. Broome is a detective who can't let go of a cold case - a local husband and father disappeared seventeen years ago, and Broome spends the anniversary every year visiting a house frozen in time, the missing man's family still waiting, his slippers left by the recliner as if he might show up any moment to step into them. Three people living lives they never wanted, hiding secrets that even those closest to them would never suspect, will find that the past doesn't recede. Even as the terrible consequences of long-ago events crash together in the present and threaten to ruin lives, they will come to the startling realization that they may not want to forget the past at all. And as each confronts the dark side of the American Dream - the boredom of a nice suburban life, the excitement of temptation, the desperation and hunger that can lurk behind even the prettiest facades - they will discover the hard truth that the line between one kind of life and another can be as whisper-thin as a heartbeat.... Stupid Black Men: How to Play the Race Card - and Lose , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 566min
Is life unfair for black Americans? Is racial equality the answer to every question of public policy? Is a huge group of citizens kept down by "the man"? Radio host and best-selling author Larry Elder has made a career out of being a thorn in the side of the conventional-wisdom crowd. He deflates the pompous and points out the completely logical truths hidden behind the nutty rhetoric and out-of-control pandering of politicians and the so-called leaders of a variety of special-interest groups. In Stupid Black Men, he takes on the mind-set of those people who always capture the most media attention - as well as masses of public money - people who say that racism is the root of all problems and who end up hurting precisely those they claim to be helping. Whether they are demagogues like Al Sharpton, established politicians like Hilary Clinton, or entertainers like Danny Glover, no one escapes Elder's cogent arguments and rapier wit. His sometimes hilarious and always infuriating examples of wrong-headedness skewer not just politicians for their smugness and hypocrisy but also actors, educators, religious leaders, and the "main-scream media" for keeping the story in the headlines. But Elder has a positive message, too: though they are fewer - and generally not as loudmouthed - there are leaders and role models today who want to sweep away race-based whining and urge everyone in America to share in the hard work, smart thinking, and optimism that make this country great. ungekürzt. Backfire: A Reporter's Look at Affirmative Action , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 715min
In this urgently important book, Zelnick looks past the good intentions to how affirmative action really works in such areas as voting rights, employment, minority set-asides, mortgage and insurance regulation, and education. Buttressing his case with the latest research data and scores of real-life examples, Zelnick shows overwhelmingly that affirmative action: favors the less qualified over the more qualified; endangers public safety in such areas as crime and fire prevention, and even medical care; has made it all but impossible for business and government to use objective merit selection criteria in hiring and promotion; brings few benefits to those most in need of help, and benefits mostly those who don't need it; distracts from - and even exacerbates the real causes of misery among inner city blacks; has developed powerful constituencies in business and government; has been broadened for political purposes to include beneficiaries who want relief but lack the historical claim of blacks; legitimizes negative stigmas about minorities and pandering to the darker instincts of racial animosity; and as an ideology has proven immune to conclusive evidence that it is counterproductive. Zelnick traces how affirmative action was first sold as a short-term program designed to expand employer awareness of qualified minority job applicants, but instead has become a coercive network of race-conscious laws, regulations, quotas, preferences, and entitlement programs - in short, an assault on the very value of equality of opportunity it was supposed to promote. Zelnick also shows how affirmative action is increasingly being challenged in the courts and political arena. He concludes with an in-depth, behind the-scenes report on the affirmative action battles now raging in California, whose outcomes will have major consequences nationwide, and for years to come. ungekürzt. Being Right Is Not Enough: What Progressives Must Learn From Conservative Success , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 612min
The 2006 election was a major turning point for the Democratic Party, but they'll need more than the Republicans' poor poll numbers to build a new progressive majority. Can progressives turn the tables by understanding and adapting the highly successful strategies and tactics developed by the right? In Being Right Is Not Enough, political analyst Paul Waldman offers Democrats and progressives a clear-eyed, multifaceted strategy for victory in elections, policy debates, and the fundamental battle between progressivism and conservatism. The time has come, he says, for progressives to borrow several pages from the right-wing playbook and beat them at their own game. The book outlines an exhaustive list of things progressives must do, and do soon, including: Create a single progressive movement - not a collection of interest groups - devoted to the twin goals of fighting conservatism and advancing a progressive worldview. Agree on a core set of progressive principles and create a progressive master narrative that unifies them. Understand that political success comes not from the details of policy plans but from the communication of character and values. Stop pandering to the voters who dislike them the most and find new ways to create a lasting majority. Devote themselves not to short-term victories but to a long-term vision of the progressive America they want to create - even if it will take decades to get there. Stop worrying about whether the elite media approve of them. Stop being timid and become warriors for their cause.Just what the pollster ordered for the Democratic Party, Being Right Is Not Enough provides a hard-hitting, insightful, and pragmatic vision for progressives of every stripe who are tired of losing and ready for victory. ungekürzt. The Magical Message of Success , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 60min
Look, this is not a book filled with metaphysical feel-good B.S. or positive thinking. For I've yet to witness an athlete, upon scoring the game-winning shot, stroll over to the sidelines, wipe a bead of sweat from his forehead, look in the camera and say: "You know Verne, it was all because of that positive thinking I did in the off-season." You see, in our brave new economy the rules have changed. No longer, could Benjamin Franklin turn the wheels of commerce, with Poor Richards Almanac. And until we hear Donald Trump say the key to his success constructing magnificent skyscrapers is positive thinking, let's just say it's a good thing, and leave it at that. You see I grew up in the church the son of a preacher man, and there is little else that gets me upset than so-called leaders intentionally leading the herd down a delusional path of leprechauns riding unicorns along rainbows. It's nauseating, certainly, you've heard visiting the Vatican today is like riding shotgun in a convertible along Hollywood Boulevard with Lloyd from the HBO show, Entourage. Look, how else can you explain politicians pandering to the idea of fairness - and in America of all countries, one of the wealthiest societies. You see much of what you've been told about success and wealth is pure unadulterated baloney! These ideas of fairness, inequality, or just being more moral and deserving of success - sure they sound nice, but I've yet to hear of success and wealth beating a path to any nice, moral, and deserving people's front door. After all, drug dealers, gun runners, and criminals can amass extravagant amounts of wealth. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Moskel. The Celestial Bed , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 611min, (USK 18)
In his most powerful and provocative novel to date, master storyteller Irving Wallace turns his incomparable talents to the world of sex therapy. Erotically charged, compassionate, and suspenseful, The Celestial Bed explores the way people make love in postsexual-revolution America. Dr. Arnold Freeberg is a courageous, pioneering sex therapist whose dedication to his patients and the principles of his profession prompt him to step outside the law and utilize the most effective tool of all in combating sexual dysfunctions - sex surrogates. Although sex surrogates are highly trained and supervised professionals who guide, demonstrate, and teach people with low sexual self-esteem how to enjoy intimacy, according to the law in many states they are prostitutes. Driven out of Arizona, Dr. Freeberg establishes a new clinic in southern California with the help of his most experienced surrogate, beautiful young Gayle Miller, and a new male surrogate, movie-star-handsome Paul Brandon. But where Dr. Freeberg expected to be able to practice in peace, he encounters powerful adversaries - an ambitious district attorney, a power-hungry evangelist, a duplicitous newspaper reporter, and the violently jealous psychotic boyfriend of one of his most needy patients - who would tear down his life's work, humiliate his patients, and put him and his staff on trial for pandering and prostitution. In the riveting, swiftly-paced narrative style that made him one of America's most widely read authors, Irving Wallace takes the reader behind closed doors into the private treatment rooms where sex surrogates lead their patients through the therapeutic exercises designed to bring them to sexual fulfillment. Readers will find themselves drawn into a circle of extraordinary people dedicated to repairing the sexually wounded, and come to understand the sex therapist's essential piece of wisdom - good lovemaking is first loving yourself and then learning to share that lo ungekürzt. Life and Writings of Geoffrey Chaucer, Hörbuch, Digital, 370min
Geoffrey Chaucer is one of our grandest and most enduring poets; an architect of our vocabulary and our literary style. By examining the English writer's texts, from his short love lyrics to the copious profusion of character and incident that is The Canterbury Tales, these 12 lectures will prepare you for the challenges of Chaucer's oeuvre, and will provide an understanding of what makes him the true "father" of English poetry. With Professor Lerer as your expert guide, you'll plumb the richness and depth of Chaucer's poetry and explore his life, the range of his work, and his impact on English language and literature. You'll examine Chaucer in virtually all the varieties of literature available to him: classical epic, domestic farce, ribald comedy, saint's life, beast fable, romance adventure, personal lyric, devotional prayer, and religious prose. You'll learn how Chaucer uses relationships between men and women, humans and God, social "insiders" and "outsiders," and high and low desires to explore our "ticklish" world, and the way life takes shape from literary forms-be they marriage vows, the verses of Scripture, or stories told by plain folk. You'll also meet some of the most vibrant characters in all of literature, including: the bawdy Wife of Bath, the manipulative Pandarus (whose very name gave rise to the term "pandering"), the upright Knight, and the ambiguous Pardoner. Professor Lerer leads you deeply into the texts, so that you learn about their sources and syntax, and the rich repertoire of poetic techniques they display. And while he makes it clear that these texts remain eminently worth reading today, he also does full justice to their medieval context. Memoir-Ries : Secret to a Happy Life: Musings from a Lunatic , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 527min
This book is equal parts self-help and hilarious reality written by a funny lunatic - the last guru you will ever need, folks, right in this book. Adrian, yup that’s me, writing in the third person like well...a crazy person (calm down it's OK for you to laugh at my crazy) - he has written an inspiring tale of survival and not becoming just another victim or statistic. This book details serious childhood and adulthood trauma from physical, verbal, and sexual abuse to bullying in school and growing up poor with a tyrant of a father in the hot streets of Miami, Florida, and into adulthood in Denver, Colorado. You will hear what it was like to survive these events as well as Adrian’s challenging adulthood having to live with and overcome mental illness, PTSD, bipolar 1 as well as physical ailments, homelessness and even addiction as well as the loss of his mother; this book details not only the horrors he has survived but it is also a swan song to a loving mother who suffered alongside him and only ever wanted for her son to be happy. His quick wit and very sick sense of humor keeps the book funny and upbeat with plenty of jokes inspiring both strength and hope to not give up and truly shine as a human being. If you want to know the back story to the cover picture you will have to dive in to a book that is written with brutal humorous honesty, or you can go to the back of the bookstore like a cheapskate, read that chapter and put the book back on the shelf - but you won’t do that. Look at how adorable I was and still am, of course I wrote my own summary - now buy me, yes this is blatant pandering, I’ve got nothing left to lose, so jump in and enjoy the ride that I had to live so that you could listen to it and tell your friends to buy a copy too. Or get the print version, which makes a great crooked table leveler. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Adrian Carlisle.
