An Unsung Hero: Coming of Age in the Dust Bowl: A Greatest Generation Account, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 255min
Growing in a small Texas town in the midst of the Great Depression, pummeled by the mighty dust storms so devastating that the region was known as the “Dust Bowl”, and coping with a diagnosis of tuberculosis at age 15, Jimmy Ray Lewis and his family experienced hardship, loss, and community rejection. This audiobook is the story of forgiveness, family strength, and faith that life would be better if they could just “keep on keeping on”. It is a story of a simple life before modern bathrooms, electricity, paved roads and highways, or radios when neighbors helped neighbors and a person's word was his bond. A time when the audible utterance of the words “damn” or “hell” could result in ejection from a store or cafe. Jimmy and friends entertained themselves with homemade stilts and scooters, warred across the neighborhood with rubber guns, and the worst Halloween prank was putting a potato in a neighbor's exhaust pipe. The era and the values it represented became the foundation shared by the members of the Greatest Generation. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Todd Gaddy. Fluffy Bunnies 2 (eBook, ePUB)
"Armageddon-averting fun for fans of Jon Scieszka's Spaceheadz and M.T. Anderson's Pals in Peril" -from the author of Attack of the Fluffy Bunnies (Kirkus Reviews). When film-loving twins Joules and Kevin Rockman left their summer camp, they thought their days of fighting evil bunnies from outer space were over. Surely there won't be giant rabbits bent on world domination at their school, right? Wrong. Luckily, these bunnies aren't FLUFFS (Fierce, Large, Ugly, and Ferocious Furballs)-sugar-addicted giant rabbits out to hypnotize and kill. Unluckily, they're worse: the FOOFS (Fierce, Obnoxious, Odoriferous Furballs)-seemingly normal-size rabbits (with extra-large noses) out to take over the world! Can Joules and Kevin save themselves, and their school, from the Schnoz of Doom? Seriously funnyNew York Times-bestselling author Andrea Beaty raises the stakes in this sequel to her zany, pulpy sci-fi farce. And, not to use Famous Last Words, but with illustrations by Caldecott-winning artist Dan Santat (The Adventures of Beekle,Crankenstein), what could possibly go wrong? Praise for Attack of the Fluffy Bunnies "A lighthearted, clever send-up of zany horror conventions, this book is just the thing for kids about ready for M. T. Anderson's Whales on Stilts." -Booklist "Beaty's storytelling is lighthearted and fast-paced... her unconventional and entertaining narrative make it a wholly fun read." -Publishers Weekly- Shop: buecher

Calling All Minds: How to Think and Create Like an Inventor , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 265min
From world-renowned autism spokesperson, scientist, and inventor Temple Grandin - an audiobook of personal stories, inventions, and facts that will blow young inventors' minds and make them soar.Have you ever wondered what makes a kite fly or a boat float? Have you ever thought about why snowflakes are symmetrical or why golf balls have dimples? Have you ever tried to make a kaleidoscope or build a pair of stilts? In Calling All Minds, Temple Grandin explores the ideas behind all of those questions and more. She delves into the science behind inventions, the steps various people took to create and improve upon ideas as they evolved, and the ways in which young inventors can continue to think about and understand what it means to tinker, to fiddle, and to innovate. And laced throughout it all, Temple gives us glimpses into her own childhood tinkering, building, and inventing.More than a blueprint for how to build things, in Calling All Minds, Temple Grandin creates a blueprint for different ways to look at the world. And more than a call to action, she gives a call to imagination and shows listeners that there is truly no single way to approach any given problem - but that an open and inquisitive mind is always key.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. ungekürzt. 50 Jobs in 50 States: One Man's Journey of Discovery Across America , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 513min
Like lots of college grads, Daniel Seddiqui was having a hard time finding a job. But despite more than 40 rejections, he knew opportunities had to exist. So he set out on an extraordinary quest: 50 jobs in 50 states in 50 weeks. And not just any jobs; he chose professions that reflected the culture and economy of each state. Working as everything from a cheesemaker in Wisconsin, a border patrol agent in Arizona, and a meatpacker in Kansas to a lobsterman in Maine, a surfing instructor in Hawaii, and a football coach in Alabama, Daniel chronicles how he adapted to wildly differing people, cultures, and environments. From one week to the next he had no idea exactly what his duties would be, where he'd be sleeping, what he'd be eating, or how he'd be received. He became a roving news item, appearing on CNN, Fox News, World News Tonight, MSNBC, and the Today show, which was good preparation for his stint as a television weatherman. Tackling challenge after challenge - overcoming anxiety about working four miles underground in a West Virginia coal mine, learning to walk on six-foot stilts (in a full Egyptian costume) at a Florida amusement park, racing the clock as a pit-crew member at an Indiana racetrack - Daniel completed his journey a changed man. In this book he shares stories about the people he met, reveals the lessons he learned, and explains the five principles that kept him going. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: L. J. Ganser. Unmasked: A Memoir , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 994min
You have the luck of Croesus on stilts (as my Auntie Vi would have said) if you've had the sort of career, ups and downs, warts and all that I have in that wondrous little corner of show business called musical theatre. One of the most successful and distinguished artists of our time, Andrew Lloyd Webber has reigned over the musical theatre world for nearly five decades. The winner of numerous awards, including multiple Tonys and an Oscar, Lloyd Webber has enchanted millions worldwide with his music and numerous hit shows, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera - Broadway's longest running show - and most recently, School of Rock. In Unmasked, written in his own inimitable, quirky voice, the revered, award-winning composer takes stock of his achievements, the twists of fate and circumstance which brought him both success and disappointment, and the passions that inspire and sustain him. The son of a music professor and a piano teacher, Lloyd Webber reveals his artistic influences, from his idols Rodgers and Hammerstein and the perfection of South Pacific's "Some Enchanted Evening", to the pop and rock music of the 1960s and Puccini's Tosca, to P. G. Wodehouse and T. S. Eliot. Lloyd Webber recalls his bohemian London youth, reminiscing about the happiest place of his childhood, his homemade Harrington Pavilion - a make-believe world of musical theatre. A record of several exciting and turbulent decades of British and American musical theatre, Unmasked is ultimately a chronicle of artistic creation. Lloyd Webber looks back at the development of some of his most famous works and illuminates his collaborations with luminaries such as Tim Rice, Cameron Mackintosh, and Trevor Nunn. Taking us behind the scenes of his productions, Lloyd Webber reveals fascinating details about each show, including the creative and logistical challenges and ar ungekürzt. Language: English. MORE WATER, LESS LAND, NEW ARCHITECTURE
About this book Climate change, and the inevitability of sea level rise, will require much more of us than simply pulling back from the coastline. The thesis of Weston Wright's More Water Less Land New Architecture is that we need to start thinking in an entirely different way about the relationship of cities to waterfront sites and of the relationship of buildings to water, which means rethinking many of architecture's implicit premises. If architecture has been confrontational with water-think bold towers erected beside the sea, as if to dare the water to challenge them-Wright's argument is that we will need to be modest, accommodating, and accepting of the power and presence of water if our cities are to survive. He knows that nature is stronger than we are, and that best chance mankind has to build successfully will be to build with, not against, the reality of water. This is an important book, not least because its quiet, sober tone balances natural history with architectural history, and reaches across the world to show examples of architecture that accommodates to the water ranging from small vernacular houses on stilts to huge megastructures anchored like islands in the sea. Although Wright's argument transcends aesthetics or style, his book is, in the end, a case for the strength that comes from restraint, and perhaps even for the lasting power of gentleness.Paul GoldbergerThe New School's Joseph Urban Professor of DesignWeston Wright has put together a truly valuable, thought provoking, and original collection of ideas, stories, and images that are designed to make us more comfortable with living near, on, and with water in the coming decades. He has managed to encapsulate his insights into concise, illustrative presentations that flow into each other, making his book short, compact, and compelling. In this book, Wright is paving the way or rather, building a bridge, into an emerging coastal architecture and coastal urbanism that he already seems comfortable and familiar with, urging us to catch up with him and to sail along for the adventure. This book is a wonderful exhibit of realistic, down-to-earth, evidence-based futurism.Shlomo AngelProfessor of City PlanningThe Marron Institute of Urban Management at New York University- Shop: buecher
