A Road Well Traveled: Profiles of America's Great Automobile Pioneers, Vol. II , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 147min
The great American automotive pioneers were entrepreneurial inventors and visionaries who changed the American landscape and brought us a new national culture. The dawn of the automobile ushered away the ubiquitous horse-drawn carriages and the rutted, dusty and wash-boarded dirt roads they traveled on, and replaced them with cars powered by steam, electricity and gasoline. These pioneers lifted the veil of isolation that enveloped most pre-20th century Americans and made it possible for the average person to travel whenever and wherever he or she pleased. Automobiles changed the concept of transportation and more so, how and where we lived, worked and played. Written by award-winning author and syndicated columnist Daniel Alef, who has written more than 300 biographical profiles of America's great tycoons, and narrated by radio personality Baron Ron Herron, A Road Well Traveled offers many lessons to be drawn from these pioneers and the fascinating lives they led. Some became fabulously wealthy; others died in obscurity. But they developed America's largest industry in the space of one generation and demonstrated the skills and characteristics necessary to achieve such success. Their audacity, determination, perseverance, work-ethic, and passion were unassailable. These pioneers were undaunted by any and all obstacles in their path. Their stories are instructive and absorbing. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Baron Ron Herron. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/bigh/000102/bk_bigh_000102_sample.mp3. Henry Ford: King Henry the First, a Driving Force , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 23min
Henry Ford, an American folk hero to many, was a man with several faces. He was a genius who revolutionized the automobile industry, irrevocably altered American culture and commerce, developed mass production, and helped the middle class emerge in America. He was also an anti-Semitic autocrat who hated Wall Street, bankers and financiers with unmitigated passion. Ford paid the highest wages but was zealous in his opposition to unions. He was exceptionally hard on his only son, Edsel, who died of stomach cancer at the age 48, and Ford acknowledged his admiration for Hitler. And in establishing one of the largest American fortunes, he never borrowed a penny, not from individuals, financial institutions or the government. Henry Ford's focus on developing an affordable car, the Model T, at a time when most automobile manufacturers sought more luxurious models, ushered a new era of transportation, but even more so, brought about a revolution in technology, sales and culture. The Model T made its debut in 1908, bearing a purchase price of $825. In the following six years the price dropped to $575 and sales soared from 10,000 a year to nearly half of all the automobiles sold in America. At its peak, Ford Motor Company was churning out one car every 24 seconds! Award-winning author and syndicated columnist Daniel Alef brings out the story of Ford and his remarkable life of achievements and his dark side. ungekürzt. Language: English. Berlin Noir , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 540min
Brand-new stories by: Zoë Beck, Ulrich Woelk, Susanne Saygin, Robert Rescue, Johannes Groschupf, Ute Cohen, Katja Bohnet, Matthias Wittekindt, Kai Hensel, Miron Zownir, Max Annas, Michael Wuliger, and Rob Alef. Translated from German by Lucy Jones. From the introduction by Thomas Wörtche: Berlin does not make it easy to write noir fiction - or perhaps Berlin makes it too easy. Noir tradition casts a long, influential, and even daunting shadow. Alfred Döblin's and Christopher Isherwood's works, some of Bertolt Brecht's plays, the Morgue poems by Gottfried Benn, M by Fritz Lang, and many other narratives from the first third of the 20th century, all of which are tinged with noir, set high intellectual standards, and literary and aesthetic benchmarks that are hard to surpass....Neither Döblin nor Benn, Brecht nor Lang, catered to any crime fiction traditions. They merely steeped their literary projects in a great deal of noir. And so it is with most of the stories in our anthology: they do not necessarily follow the usual patterns of crime fiction, but regard noir as a license to write as they wish, a certain way of approaching the city, and a prism through which its nature is viewed.... What's left is history. It is omnipresent in Berlin at every turn; the city is saturated in a history full of blood, violence, and death. "A volume of short stories that revolve around the history, geography and literary traditions of Berlin." (New York Times Book Review, "Globetrotting," April 2019) "This collection is very modern, the stories are set now and reflect on contemporary concerns. They demonstrate a dynamism and originality that shows just how important a part of the euro-noir genre German writing is. There are 13 stories here, as diverse as the city they are set in, each one is from a different part of the German capital, and although they are disparate with very different intentions, a picture emerges of a troubled, mult ungekürzt.
