The Scarifyers: The Horror of Loch Ness, Hörbuch, Digital, 121min
The Scarifyers is a series of rip-roaring tales of comedic supernatural intrigue set in 1930s Britain, distilling the likes of Dick Barton, The Avengers, The Devil Rides Out and Quatermass into cracking new audio adventures. The Scarifyers is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra, and has been described as 'rollicking good fun', 'a slice of audio perfection', 'the smartest and most enjoyable thing on British radio' and 'like Tintin but with the lights out.' This is the seventh Scarifyers adventure. Celebrated speed ace Sir Malcolm Campbell (Alex Lowe) is carrying out speed trials on Loch Ness when a bank of fog suddenly descends. When it lifts, Sir Malcolm and his boat have mysteriously vanished. MI-13's Harry Crow (David Warner) and Professor Dunning (Terry Molloy) are soon shaking up the sleepy loch-side village of Inver Farigaig. Aided by kindly local GP Dr Pippin (Philip Madoc), they discover a connection to the erstwhile Laird of Boleskine and Abertarff - occultist, bon viveur and occasional nudist Aleister Crowley (David Benson).Crow and Dunning swiftly realise that there's more to Inver Farigaig than meets the eye: fraudulent Nessie hunters, demonic bed sheets, Caledonian witches and things that go bump in the night. Joined by Crowley, their investigations into Sir Malcolm's disappearance will lead them into terrible danger, as an old foe threatens to unleash... The Horror of Loch Ness. Language: English. What She Saw Last Night , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 617min
Jenny Bowen is going home. Following an acrimonious split from her husband, she is quitting her job and moving back from London to the small town in the Scottish Highlands where she grew up. After tying up some last-minute loose ends, she rushes to Euston and boards the Caledonian Sleeper, headed north on a 500 mile, 10-hour journey through the night. As Jenny is getting settled in her cabin, she hears a commotion outside in the corridor. She sees a pale little girl of about eight years old being bundled into a cabin down the carriage, with a stressed-looking woman whom Jenny assumes to be her mother. A tall man glances at the pair as he passes them. Jenny thinks it's strange that he has no luggage. He gives her a look that makes her uneasy before opening the door of the cabin next to her. When they reach their destination in the morning, Jenny discovers the woman dead in her cabin...but there's no sign of the little girl. The train company have no record of a child of that age being booked on the train, and CCTV shows the dead woman boarding alone.Jenny starts to get settled in her new home. She tries to put the incident out of her head and tells herself that everyone else is right: she must have imagined the little girl, or it was a misunderstanding. But deep down, she knows that isn't the truth. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Carolyn Bonnyman. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/orio/001964/bk_orio_001964_sample.mp3. The Romans in Scotland: The History and Legacy of Ancient Rome’s Northernmost Campaigns , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 147min
The Romans were master builders, and much of what they built has stood the test of time. Throughout their vast empire, they have left grand structures, from the Forum and Pantheon in Rome, to the theatres and hippodromes of North Africa, and the triumphal gates in Anatolia and France. Wherever they went, the Romans built imposing structures to show their power and ability, and one of their most impressive constructions was built on the northernmost fringe of the empire.Shortly after Emperor Hadrian came to power in the early second century CE, he decided to seal off Scotland from Roman Britain with an ambitious wall stretching from sea to sea. To accomplish this, the wall had to be built from the mouth of the River Tyne - where Newcastle stands today - 80 Roman miles (76 miles or 122 kilometers) west to Bowness-on-Solway. The sheer scale of the job still impresses people today, and Hadrian’s Wall has the advantage of being systematically studied and partially restored.Of course, the masterful architecture of the wall belied the fact that it was built for defense, because Scotland (known as Caledonia to the Romans) was never fully conquered or incorporated into the Roman Empire, a fact that many modern Scots remain quite proud of today. While the Romans made several efforts to subdue Scotland, it is not entirely clear whether their failure to complete the subjugation of the northern part of the British Isles was due to the ferocity of the Caledonian/Pictish tribesmen or whether the Romans simply came to the conclusion that the region had far too little to offer in the way of resources (either minerals, metals, or slaves) to warrant repeated major campaigns. Scotland in the first century CE had no settlements of any size, so profitable trade was not easy to establish, and so, did not offer any major motivation for military conquest. ungekürzt.
