On Baptism (Lighthouse Church Fathers) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 63min
Happy is our sacrament of water, in that, by washing away the sins of our early blindness, we are set free and admitted into eternal life! A treatise on this matter will not be superfluous; instructing not only such as are just becoming formed (in the faith), but them who, content with having simply believed, without full examination of the grounds of the traditions, carry (in mind), through ignorance, an untried though probable faith. The consequence is, that a viper of the Cainite heresy, lately conversant in this quarter, has carried away a great number with her most venomous doctrine, making it her first aim to destroy baptism. Which is quite in accordance with nature; for vipers and asps and basilisks themselves generally do affect arid and waterless places. But we, little fishes, after the example of our Jesus Christ, are born in water, nor have we safety in any other way than by permanently abiding in water; so that most monstrous creature, who had no right to teach even sound doctrine, knew full well how to kill the little fishes, by taking them away from the water! ungekürzt. Selected Papers on Anthropology, Travel and Exploration , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 515min
Finding from my own personal experience how troublesome it is to hunt through piles of dusty old volumes, I have decided to make a small selection of these papers which I consider are not only rare and very interesting, but which also give an insight into the varied activities and achievements of Burton’s crowded life.Even if local libraries fail to yield an old volume of some magazine long since withdrawn from circulation, one is almost certain of finding it at the British Museum. But then the British Museum is accessible only to a comparative few, and even those few will find that back numbers of journals, etc., are stored away in a distant building and several days’ notice has to be given before a required volume can be procured. Finally, some of the Burton pamphlets are so rare that the chance of finding them is little less than an impossibility. It will, I think, be realized that such a volume as this will not be superfluous, for, apart from saving people an enormous amount of trouble, it will give them further insight into the life-work of one of the greatest men of the Victorian era. ungekürzt. A Hero of Our Time , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 369min
Grigori Aleksandrovich Pechorin is an enigma: arrogant, cocky, melancholic, brave, cynic, romantic, loner, socialite, soldier, free soul, and yet, victim of the world, he eludes definition and remains a mystery to those who know him. Just who is he? And what does he hope to achieve? Evolving from first person to third person, and then into a diary, A Hero of Our Time takes on a variety of forms to interrogate Pechorin's cryptic character and his unusual philosophy, providing breathtaking descriptions of the Caucasus along the way. The novel has been hailed as an influence on such writers as Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov, and is a striking take on Lord Byron's "superfluous man"; it harks back to the teaching of Machiavelli, while anticipating the future work of Nietzsche. Hailed by Vladimir Nabokov as one of the greatest Russian novels, the book has been referenced in novels by Albert Camus and Ian Fleming, and films by Ingmar Bergman. Translators: J. H. Wisdom and Marr Murray PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio. ungekürzt. Language: English. Soul Gardening: 4 Guided Meditations, Hörbuch, Digital, 119min
Take care of yourself as you would a garden, it’s easier than you think. When it is not a routine or you’ve had a busy day, meditation, based on silence, paying attention to ones breathing, observing without judging thoughts, can be difficult. Then, a voice that guides with simple gardening practices can lead, through metaphor, to feeling at peace and serenity. The four meditations, which can be heard in sequence or individually, are: Cleaning: removes sluggishness, parasitic thoughts, environmental negativity and gives a sense of freshness, as you might feel after taking a shower or a bath. Seeding: helps to create new attitudes, ideas, thoughts, recalling the awareness of consciousness, in which birth and death are just two sides of the same phenomenon. Pruning: what is born cannot take unnecessary or chaotic direction, and cutting the superfluous helps, as well as some movement which forces us to do so, to travel light, more comfortably and faster. Blooming: having grown and full of energy, we can create new projects, flourish as works of art, drawing from sounds and colours, resources of creation that become easily accessible. Jesus and Materialism in the Gospel of Mark (eBook, ePUB)
The Gospel of Mark presents Jesus' ministry and mission as a journey on "the way," a journey to Jerusalem that ultimately results in his suffering and crucifixion. On the journey to the cross, Jesus embodies that which is least, vulnerable, and destitute in society, and he invites his followers to journey with him on the way. Robert Ewusie Moses argues that this invitation to discipleship is a call for believers to reassess their relationship with material possessions and their desire for wealth and power. Like Jesus, believers are to travel light on the way, for holding on strongly to possessions can be a hindrance for the journey. To embrace those in society who are least, vulnerable, and destitute is to embrace Jesus himself and the God who sent him. Traveling light on the way requires believers to place their trust in God, to depend on God to provide their needs. Moses shows that the journey is by its very nature a rejection of the status quo; it demands followers of Jesus to shun greed and the amassing of superfluous possessions that the world encourages. The book demonstrates that to be on this journey is to commit to the creation of communities of care, where those like Jesus-poor, vulnerable, and marginalized-are welcomed and cared for.- Shop: buecher

Lean Principles Explained , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 41min
Lean is not a new concept; in fact, since the turn of the 20th Century lean principles been instrumental in the growth and transformation of industries and economies across the globe. Although the specific term was not coined until much later, the first advances in the lean movement were made in the automotive manufacturing industry - with the innovative plant operations of Henry Ford and later the seminal restructuring of Toyota business operations by Taiichi Ohno. In recent decades, the principles of lean thinking have been extrapolated from their roots in manufacturing and applied to a number of other modern business structures, always with resounding success. This book will guide you through the core aspects of lean principles, allowing you to see how implementing this philosophy throughout your workforce could revolutionize your company, or even your entire industry. The key concept at the heart of lean thinking is striving to keep only what is valuable to the end customer. In the case of this book - the end customer is you: the reader. We have kept the material lean - shaving off any superfluous information - so the ideas you'll find here can be easily digested, understood and implemented, with no time wasted on waffle. ungekürzt. These Desired Things: A Collection of Short Stories Including Breaking Bread with Ayrton Senna , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 531min
These Desired Things is a stimulating, philosophical offering; a tour de force in creative writing. Praised in review as "imagery and literature at its finest", defining this book's genre seems largely superfluous - for its immersive, lyrical text is part fiction, part memoir, part autobiography. The chapters are presented as a collection of 11 short stories: all of them varying in their individual plots, their settings and their style, yet all of them remain essential elements of the whole; for running through each is a series of subtle, uniting threads. Matchett's own narration of these captivating stories releases a whole other level of intimacy: The listener feels truly bonded to the author's emotions. Matchett's lilting tones once again prove perfect for this collection of his own short stories - and, undoubtedly, the diversity of these 11 chapters (and the inimitable style of the storytelling) is sure to introduce a whole new audience to Matchett's beguiling writing. That said, the author has included stories that will instantly appeal to those listeners already familiar with his earlier books - those with a knowledge of Formula 1 motor racing. And, most likely, these same passionate listeners will be moved to tears on reaching the closing lines of the book's truly breathtaking penultimate chapter: "Breaking Bread with Ayrton Senna." ungekürzt.
