Augustus Carp, Esq. by Himself: Being the Autobiography of a Really Good ManNarrated by Gregory Sheridan and Carol BoxThis fictitious memoir, detailing the desperately suburban life of an obnoxious prig, was published anonymously in 1924. While it resembles the much better known The Diary of a Nobody, the satire is more far-reaching and devastating, and the main character is one of the most memorable in comic fiction. The actual author was later discovered to be Sir Henry Howarth Bashford (1880-1961), who enjoyed a distinguished career in medicine and served as personal physician to King George VI. ungekürzt. Eliza was the first volume of the Eliza Stories by Barry Pain (1864-1928). It was published in 1900 and was the first of these stories that appeared in cheap editions and were sold on railway bookstalls. The stories were hugely popular and made Pain's name. Although the book is titled Eliza, it is her husband who is its comic hero. The husband, whose name we never learn, is an overbearing, pretentious prig who believes he is right about everything but is constantly undermined and proved wrong by his long-suffering wife. He is without doubt one of the great comic creations in the tradition of Mr Pooter in The Diary of a Nobody. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Roy Macready. Susie unpacks the Craig's List witch hunt that pressured the company into removing its Adult Services section from its bulletin board. Susie says that the people who ran the campaign against the popular want ads claimed they were protecting "the innocent little children", but in fact, those crusaders were more of a collection of McCarthyist hypocrites. Although Craig's List had the law on its side, the company succumbed to this Prig Patrol and decided to remove itself from the Holy Right's cross hairs. Meanwhile, those ads have just moved to another adult Internet site. Good luck trying to clean up the entire world! Next, in our "Tell me your Sex Story" segment, Susie continues to ask all those nosy, personal questions to a willing listener. This week "George" gets into the sexual confession booth and talks about his secret sex life. He likes to hit the road and have adventures with professional escorts, and he's perfected how to find the perfect ménage à trois. He and Susie discuss blowjobs, orgasms, and even sex with your own wife. Have a question? You can call Susie's hotline at 831-480-5110. When Lytton Strachey published Emininent Victorians, he took the general perception of the Victorian age among English-speaking readers and turned it upside-down. Four of the most eminent and idealized heroic figures of the Victorian age came under his witty and unsparing gaze and emerged, astonishingly enough, as human beings. His study of one of the most revered prelates in England, Cardinal Manning, reveals a profound and courageous religious mind combined with the conniving and ruthless soul of a born politician. His dissection of the life of Florence Nightingale shows her both as the Lady of the Lamp and as a woman of steely backbone and adamantine determination, who not only cared for wounded and sick soldiers with complete dedication and solicitude, but who wreaked holy hell on any bureaucrat or governmental office that tried to get in her way. When Strachey is finished with Dr. Arnold, we understand him as a revolutionary reformer of English education and as a first-rate prig. And when Strachey finishes leading us through the life of General George Gordon, we come away having known him both as a man of extraordinary courage and as a near-lunatic. Fascinating, witty, insightful and provoking, these four biographical studies single-handedly revived the art of biography in the English language. ungekürzt. Language: English.
