Propaganda , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 184min
Propaganda, an influential book written by Edward L. Bernays in 1928, incorporated the literature from social science and psychological manipulation into an examination of the techniques of public communication. Bernays wrote the book in response to the success of some of his earlier works such as Crystallizing Public Opinion (1923) and A Public Relations Counsel (1927). Propaganda explored the psychology behind manipulating masses and the ability to use symbolic action and propaganda to influence politics, effect social change, and lobby for gender and racial equality. Walter Lippman was Bernays' unacknowledged American mentor and his work, The Phantom Public, greatly influenced the ideas expressed in Propaganda a year later. The work propelled Bernays into media historians' view of him as the “father of public relations". Bernays' honest and practical manual provides much insight into some of the most powerful and influential institutions of contemporary industrial state capitalist democracies. ungekürzt. Utilitarianism , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 184min
John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism is a classic exposition and defense of utilitarianism in ethics. Mill's aim is to explain what utilitarianism is, to show why it is the best theory of ethics, and to defend it against a wide range of criticisms and misunderstandings. Though heavily criticized both in Mill's lifetime and in the years since, Utilitarianism did a great deal to popularize utilitarian ethics and was the most influential philosophical articulation of a liberal humanistic morality that was produced in the 19th century. ungekürzt. Carmilla , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 184min
Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla is an old Gothic classic that tells the story of Laura, a young lady who lives with her father in a large castle. Despite living in a castle, Laura is lonely and made lonelier when her father tells her that a girl her same age who was supposed to come visit has mysteriously died. Luckily, a young girl named Carmilla stays with Laura and her father after she has a carriage accident nearby. Carmilla's mother, who was also in the carriage accident, asks Laura's father if she can leave her daughter at the castle for a few months because she must continue on her journey. Carmilla and Laura become the best of friends, and Laura finally finds happiness despite Carmilla's strange habits of refusing to pray, sleepwalking, and sleeping most of the day away. Meanwhile, young women in the area begin dying mysteriously, and Laura starts to have horrible nightmares and eventually she becomes ill. Unanimously, Laura and her father decide to leave the castle, and they soon discover that Carmilla is actually Countess Karnstein, a famous vampire thought to have been defeated many years ago. Baron Vordenburg, a vampire expert, sets off to find the hidden resting place of Countess Karnstein while Laura and her father only hope that he can destroy the monster before Laura is preyed upon once again by "Carmilla". This thrilling story is one of the earliest vampire books written, and it sets the stage for an entire genre of exciting Gothic novels. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Elaine Wise.
Coming Through, Hörbuch, Digital, 184min
Here is a marvellous collection of inspirational, heartwarming, true-life stories by the much loved Songs of Praise presenter. In the course of her work for the BBC, Pam Rhodes has met hundreds of people whose stories have messages for us all. Some are famous, many are now her friends. Some have found inspiration and support through their Christian faith, others have found strength in other ways. Now a number of them have felt able to share with Pam, and with us, their touching and emotive, sometimes shocking, experiences. It's an intimate and encouraging book of personal, heartfelt stories that echo the kinds of challenges most of us face at some time in our lives. For instance, Elaine Harrild was the teacher at Dunblane primary school. Shot in the massacre, and handicapped ever since, she witnessed the insane murder of 16 children, and has worked ever since to hold their small community together. And a group of former POWs who worked on the Death Railway were stunned to hear of a monument to their former comrades in Japan itself, and were moved to return 50 years later to participate in an act of reconciliation. First Love, Hörbuch, Digital, 184min
While known for beautifully observed works of social realism in the decades leading up to the Russian revolution, Ivan Turgenev, in this acclaimed tale, depicts a revolution of another kind: the electrifying transformation of a young man`s first love." Set against a background of the decaying aristocracy from which Turgenev himself came, with an extraordinarily vivid cast of characters, First Love is one of the most autobiographical of his works, and it throbs with the ache and wonder of that once-in-a-lifetime experience - until the tender evocation is pierced by a devastating revelation that leaves the young hero`s sweet illusions obliterated. What makes the story remarkable is Turgenev's ability to show how the experience can lead to a compassion that is transcendent, as is this remarkable novella. Language: English.
