Necahual is a short story from the collection Tides from the New Worlds. Caribbean-born novelist Tobias Buckell established himself as a gifted new voice in science fiction with his stunning first novel, Crystal Rain. Now, in his first collection, Buckell demonstrates his strengths in the short form, offering listeners a collection of stories that are compelling, smart, wonderfully imagined, and entertaining. Tides from the New Worlds contains 19 stories that range from multicultural science fiction to magical realism, some in print for the first time. "Buckell's stories, culturally informed and layered, are driven by plot, rather than character or concept; story tends to be centerpiece. He is in this sense a little like a mellowed, more pragmatic, hipper version of Octavia Butler." (Strange Horizons) "In Tides from the New Worlds, Tobias Buckell does what the best SF/F writers do: tells stories that touch our minds with wonder and endow our hearts with perception. Reading this collection, for those of us culture-bound West or East, brings science fiction and fantasy to a fresh awakening. And for those of us who miss seeing ourselves in the fiction we so often read, it's quite moving." (Tor Books) ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Prentice Onayemi. A wealthy Boston woman named Claribel Sudds consults Dr. Daws, a wise old chemist who dabbles in magic, about her desire for a stage career. For a fee, Daws prepares some magic candies in five flavors that will endow the eater with the talents of dancing, singing, elocution, piano playing and high kicking. However, Claribel forgets the box of goodies on a store counter where it is inadvertently taken by the 12-year-old Bessie Bostwick. At home, Bessie eats the chocolate candy and places the others in a serving dish in the hall. Then she puts in a stunning performance of Beethoven's seventh piano sonata, followed by the overture to "The Flying Dutchman". Meanwhile, her father, mother and two dinner guests each take one of the remaining candies. At the table, Mr. Bostwick breaks out in song in a tremolo soprano voice, his wife recites poetry, and the Yale professor kicks his soup dish to the ceiling. The senator, who had slipped his candy into his pocket, flees this scene of madness. The next day, just before a speech, he eats his ballet-inducing candy.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Dr. Lars Sorenson has lost support for his dream of a cancer center. Elijah-Co appears as a white knight, but with its own agenda. Lars Sorenson, an ambitious young oncologist, is crushed when the promised funding for his cancer center is withdrawn. An obsessively secretive company, Elijah-Co, appears as a white knight-but with its own agenda. Lars can conduct human trials on Elijah-Co's new cancer-killing drugs, but only if he agrees to perform a shadow study of one of them, EJ 181. Animal data suggests that this drug can reverse the aging process. Lars must prove its effectiveness in humans by conducting a clandestine trial. His research takes on greater urgency when he discovers that his wife's mysterious illness may be cured by EJ 181. Half-truths and lies dot the landscape as Lars pursues Elijah-Co's true goal of proving that EJ 181 can endow amortality. Fiction is reality on steroids, and the novel Elijah-Co delivers that. Science fiction, however, needs to have deep roots in reality-the science must be believable. Dan Luedke's experience with clinical cancer research provides the expertise for a credible scientific platform as Elijah-Co pursues age reversal and amortality.

This book provides a systematic introduction to functions of one complex variable. Its novel feature is the consistent use of special color representations - so-called phase portraits - which visualize functions as images on their domains.Reading Visual Complex Functions requires no prerequisites except some basic knowledge of real calculus and plane geometry. The text is self-contained and covers all the main topics usually treated in a first course on complex analysis. With separate chapters on various construction principles, conformal mappings and Riemann surfaces it goes somewhat beyond a standard programme and leads the reader to more advanced themes. In a second storyline, running parallel to the course outlined above, one learns how properties of complex functions are reflected in and can be read off from phase portraits. The book contains more than 200 of these pictorial representations which endow individual faces to analytic functions. Phase portraits enhance the intuitive understanding of concepts in complex analysis and are expected to be useful tools for anybody working with special functions - even experienced researchers may be inspired by the pictures to new and challenging questions.Visual Complex Functions may also serve as a companion to other texts or as a reference work for advanced readers who wish to know more about phase portraits.
