On the Shortness of Life , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 71min
On the Shortness of Life is a moral essay written by Seneca, a Roman Stoic philosopher, sometime around the year 49 AD, to his father-in-law Paulinus. The philosopher brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that people waste much of it in meaningless pursuits. According to the essay, nature gives people enough time to do what is really important and the individual must allot it properly. In general, time is best used by living in the present moment in pursuit of the intentional, purposeful life. In the treatise Seneca argues that we waste so much time because we do not properly value it. We expend great effort in protecting other valuables such as money and property, but because time appears intangible, we allow others to occupy it and take time away from us. Wise people, on the other hand, understand that time is the most valuable of all resources, and with effort can free themselves from external control to engage in meaningful introspection and create an intentional life. ungekürzt. White Trash & Southern: Collected Poems, Volume 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 199min
Two hundred thirty-two poems, 232 stories of life, from birth to death, domestic bliss to domestic violence, political stupidity to flatulent bus travelers, celebration, mourning, joy, sadness… Poetry in this data-saturated age is not, for most, a viable way to make a living. So why expend the time and energy to create something that few people will listen to and even fewer will purchase? To which I must ask, why do people sing in the rain, paint pictures, dance? Because it provides pleasure and reward and perhaps even keeps them sane. As a writer of fiction and nonfiction, I am most concerned with story. When I write poetry, I view it not as some lofty literary tool to fool or condescend, but as an exercise in crafting story within the strictest confines. White Trash & Southern is a collection of such exercises, spanning nearly three decades. To create a complex story within a limited number of words - to communicate far more than appears - is a challenge that can provide enormous reward and satisfaction. Sometimes I succeed. Sometimes I don't. But at least I remain sane. Sort of, C.S. Fuqua. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: C.S. Fuqua. Being a Proactive Grandfather: How to Make a Difference , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 209min
Statistics tell us that male Baby Boomers probably have another 20 to 30 good years ahead of us, and most have grandchildren. But how much time and mental energy will we expend on these living legacies? How much will we prioritize them, and how proactive and deliberate will we be as granddads? New York Times number-one best-selling author Richard Eyre encourages gradfathers to ask themselves a very important question: what kind of grandfather will you be? Will you be a disengaged grandfather, who downsizes to an adults-only condo in Sun City by a golf course and rarely sees his grandkids? Will you be a limited grandfather, a supportive grandfather, or best of all will you be a proactive grandfather? Only when we choose to be proactive does grandfathering become effective, consequential, and truly fun. At this level, you deliberately ponder the needs you can uniquely fulfill, and you set goals and plans to enhance your grandchildren's lives (in concert and in teamwork with the goals and stewardship of their parents). This approach will stretch and test you, but it will also reward you with levels of fulfillment, well-being, love, and peace otherwise unobtainable. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Minimalist Mindset: The Practical Path to Making Your Passions a Priority and to Retaking Your Freedom , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 208min
What would you focus on if you were no longer weighed down by your unwanted responsibilities? If you want to add something meaningful to your life, like traveling to exotic places, composing beautiful music, or experiencing a new friendship in a foreign language, you will need to figure out how to eliminate other things from your daily routine. Your time and money are not infinite so if you want to add something important to your life, there is no way to avoid removing something else. Unfortunately, these types of eliminations are very difficult to implement as they require removing something from your life that is already there for a specific reason. To make room for your passions are you going to sleep less? Are you going to spend less time with your family? Are you going to expend less energy at work? These are hard and often unrealistic trade-offs to make. The Minimalist Mindset is a book about a realistic process you can use to make deliberate decisions about how to prioritize how you live your life. This book walks you through the habits you can implement to consistently make sustainable trade-offs so that you can prioritize your passions and retake your freedom. ungekürzt. Language: English. A Little Book of Big Principles , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 65min
So much of how we experience life is determined not only by the nature of our interactions with other, but also by the choices we make or fail to make regarding others. In our personal lives and our professional decisions, we have more control and influence over our lives than we are often led to believe. We have no choice about our economic position or social standing when we enter into the world, but we do have some choices about what we do with our lives once we are here. We can choose where, when, and how we expend our energies to change our economic outcomes and social standing; and change or formulate our relationships with significant and insignificant others. This is easier to do with a set of guiding principles, and A Little Book of Big Principles - Values and Virtues for a More Successful Life instructs us on how to do it.These principles can serve as a voice of conscience during times of uncertainty; as a motivating force when giving up seems like the only way out; and as a beacon of light during times of despair. They articulate what some people know intuitively and act on instinctively. These principles will equip the listener with the know-how and tools to face and conquer many of life’s challenges. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Reaves. Summary of The Obesity Code: by Jason Fung | Includes Analysis , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 20min
Summary of The Obesity Code by Jason Fung | Includes Analysis Preview: The Obesity Code addresses the history, causes, and treatments of obesity and today's rising obesity rates. By understanding it through scientific and social study, obesity becomes less of a blanket term for metabolic complications and a more tangible problem with real, though not widely practiced, solutions. The main problem with treating obesity is that many doctors and their obese patients don't know what actually causes obesity. Often, health experts believe that weight gain results from consuming too many calories while not expending enough calories, a theory known as "calories in, calories out." However, decades of research has proven that this obesity model is problematic and oversimplified. Calorie consumption and expenditure are not independent of each other. If people decrease calorie consumption in an effort to lose weight, their body compensates by slowing down processes such as metabolism to expend fewer calories. Also, exercise is not nearly as instrumental in weight loss as was once thought. PLEASE NOTE: This is key takeaways and analysis of the book and NOT the original book. Inside this Instaread summary of The Obesity Code Overview of the Book Important People Key Takeaways Analysis of Key Takeaways About the Author With Instaread, you can get the key takeaways, summary and analysis of a book in 15 minutes. The Practicing Mind: Bringing Discipline and Focus into Your Life , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 231min
Present moment awareness is an essential ingredient in life if one expects to experience any degree of authentic peace and contentment. It has been acknowledged for centuries as the cornerstone of spiritual awakening in all traditions of Eastern thought. In the West, however, it is still a relatively unrecognized concept for living. The Western mind is always restless, never content with the moment. Its internal dialogue is always firing off thoughts filled with emotional content and pulling the individual out of the present and into the past or future. But individuals raised in Western culture are becoming increasingly aware of their overall sense of mental exhaustion, their lack of discipline and their inability to focus on demand. They are willing to expend the energy necessary to experience inner peace and a quiet mind that is waiting to follow the direction of their will. They are realizing that the endless struggle to fulfill the insatiable appetite of instant gratification is fruitless and tiresome at best. They are ripe for a new path in life and eager for a new set of instructions. This is the purpose of The Practicing Mind. It comprehensively deals with helping the individual understand exactly what present-moment awareness is, how we are raised in a manner contradictory to this, and how we change our mindset to make this a part of our daily living. This book is accessible to listeners of all philosophical backgrounds. Regardless of your perspective, you will find the book's insights most compelling. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Palaeolithic Origins of Human Burial (eBook, ePUB)
Humans are unique in that they expend considerable effort and ingenuity in disposing of the dead. Some of the recognisable ways we do this are visible in the Palaeolithic archaeology of the Ice Age. The Palaeolithic Origins of Human Burial takes a novel approach to the long-term development of human mortuary activity - the various ways we deal with the dead and with dead bodies. It is the first comprehensive survey of Palaeolithic mortuary activity in the English language. Observations in the modern world as to how chimpanzees behave towards their dead allow us to identify 'core' areas of behaviour towards the dead that probably have very deep evolutionary antiquity. From that point, the palaeontological and archaeological records of the Pliocene and Pleistocene are surveyed. The core chapters of the book survey the mortuary activities of early hominins, archaic members of the genus Homo, early Homo sapiens, the Neanderthals, the Early and Mid Upper Palaeolithic, and the Late Upper Palaeolithic world. Burial is a striking component of Palaeolithic mortuary activity, although existing examples are odd and this probably does not reflect what modern societies believe burial to be, and modern ways of thinking of the dead probably arose only at the very end of the Pleistocene. When did symbolic aspects of mortuary ritual evolve? When did the dead themselves become symbols? In discussing such questions, The Palaeolithic Origins of Human Burial offers an engaging contribution to the debate on modern human origins. It is illustrated throughout, includes up-to-date examples from the Lower to Late Upper Palaeolithic, including information hitherto unpublished.- Shop: buecher
