The Power of Silence , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 510min
This volume is the first of a series of studies of the inner life, the main purpose of which is twofold. The point of approach is from the side of practical experience, and the first object is the development of a practical method. But incidentally, it is hoped that the facts and values of this practical study may be of service to philosophy. In fact, the production of these volumes was begun with the conviction that philosophy and life may be brought nearer, that practical interests put new demands upon philosophy; while the practical man may be greatly benefited by the study of idealistic first principles. Hence, the point of view is midway between the world of exact thinking and the world of actual living. The interest is not primarily psychological, nor is it ethical or religious. Yet, all of these interests play a part. That is to say, aside from one's particular faith, there seems to be a demand for a new science and a new art: the art and science of the inner life investigated in the freest spirit without regard to specific doctrines. ungekürzt. Trotsky in New York, 1917: A Radical on the Eve of Revolution , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 692min
Lev Davidovich Trotsky burst onto the world stage in November 1917 as coleader of a Marxist Revolution seizing power in Russia. It made him one of the most recognized personalities of the 20th century, a global icon of radical change. Yet just months earlier, this same Lev Trotsky was a nobody, a refugee expelled from Europe, writing obscure pamphlets and speeches, barely noticed outside a small circle of fellow travelers. Where had he come from to topple Russia and change the world? Where else? New York City. Between January and March 1917, Trotsky found refuge in the United States. America had kept itself out of the European Great War, leaving New York the freest city on earth. During his time there - just over 10 weeks - Trotsky immersed himself in the local scene. He settled his family in the Bronx, edited a radical left wing tabloid in Greenwich Village, sampled the lifestyle, and plunged headlong into local politics. His clashes with leading New York socialists over the question of US entry into World War I would reshape the American left for the next 50 years. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Outlaw Sea: A World of Freedom, Chaos, and Crime , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 454min
Even if we live within sight of the sea, it is easy to forget that our world is an ocean world. The open ocean, that vast expanse of international waters, begins just a few miles out and spreads across three-fourths of the globe. It is a place of storms and danger, both natural and manmade. And at a time when every last patch of land is claimed by one government or another, it is a place that remains radically free. With typically understated lyricism, William Langewiesche explores this ocean world and the enterprises, licit and illicit, that flourish in the privacy afforded by its horizons. Forty-three thousand gargantuan ships ply the open ocean, carrying nearly all the raw materials and products on which our lives are built. Many are owned or managed by one-ship companies so ghostly that they exist only on paper. They are the embodiment of modern global capital and the most independent objects on earth, many of them without allegiances of any kind, changing identity and nationality at will. Here is free enterprise at it freest, opportunity taken to extremes. But its efficiencies are accompanied by global problems, shipwrecks and pollution, the hard lives and deaths of the crews, and the growth of two perfectly adapted pathogens: a modern and sophisticated strain of piracy and its close cousin, the maritime form of the new stateless terrorism. This is the outlaw sea, perennially defiant and untamable, that Langewiesche brings startlingly into view. The ocean is our world, he reminds us, and it is wild. ungekürzt. Language: English. Sandra Koski
This is the first album of originals for singer/songwriter Sandra Koski. With a hint of a Southern accent, Sandra's voice will tumble into your heart with her intimate and insightful lyrics on love, longing, grief and facing fear. There are a couple of lively instrumentals on here too. All songs were written in the past four Februarys as part of the RPM Challenge, a wonderful personal challenge to create music. More info on the Challenge at rpmchallenge.com Born in South Carolina, Sandra lived in Georgia and Kansas before moving to New Hampshire with her family in the 1960s. She started playing guitar at age 12 when her brother Martin taught her the chords to a few folk songs. Extremely shy back then, she nevertheless entered her junior high talent show and discovered she was completely at home on stage. Solo coffee house gigs, singing with her three sisters and joining rock & roll bands soon followed. Sandra has played in bands with Grammy Award winner Jeff Coffin (Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Mutet, Dave Matthews Band), busked in the subways of New York City and fronted numerous dance bands in New England. Busking in New York City was her freest musical experience - playing when she wanted, where she wanted and as much as she wanted (as long as she got there first). One highlight of playing in the subway stations was catching Christopher Reeves' eye when he looked up, smiled and tossed some coins in the tip jar before getting on a train. Super man supporting live music! Some background to the songs on this album: COFFEE HOUSES - My first professional gigs in hip New England coffee houses when I was still in high school, smoking cigarettes and tuning guitars by ear. Traded sets with a singer/guitar player who was in college - oh, the crush I had on that guy. Sang my heart out and hoped the owners of the club would actually give us our fair share of the 'hat'. HUMUHUMU - Bright kisses and blue oceans. A glorious vacation with my love on Maui, snorkeling with the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa - Humuhumu for short - a tropical reef fish in Hawaii. LOVE YOU MORE - Thoughts on how much love there is in my life and how to give back as much as I receive. FOR ROSETTA - An instrumental tribute to Rosetta Tharpe. If you're not familiar with her, check her out, she's amazing! POSTCARD FOR YOU - I was on vacation in Hawaii and saw the perfect postcard for my Mother. I picked it up, had it in my hand, and then remembered she wasn't at an address I could send postcards to anymore. Wrote, and played, the song on a Lanakai ukulele I bought in Maui with some of the inheritance money she left me. TENNESSEE - Just after finishing this song I made some calls, booked the flights and spent two weeks visiting friends in Nashville and New Orleans. Yeah! KATAHDIN - Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park, Millinocket, Maine. Climbed up the Abol Trail and down the Hunt Trail with my son and my partner. Do not do this if you're not prepared with LOTS of water and flashlights. Left at 8:00 am for what was typically a 7 to 8 hour climb. Ended up coming out of the woods at 11:00 pm (15 hours later) using cell phones and digital cameras to light the way. We were very lucky. It was an amazing experience though, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat! MY HEART AGAIN - The desperate sadness in situations where there's nothing else to do. MAKE THE AIR LATIN - One of the first instrumentals I've written. Makes me smile when I play it and hear it! GREEN TEA - Moved from an apartment with thin walls and floors, and very loud neighbors upstairs and downstairs, to a home in the middle of hundreds of acres of conservation forest. We play moonlight croquette, sled down our little hill, look through telescopes at the stars and drink green tea in beautiful hand-made ruby red pottery mugs. Blissful and brilliant. SO LUCKY - Yes, so lucky.- Shop: odax
