Constructing the Limits of Europe
This comparative study harks back to the revolutionary year of 1989 and asks two critical questions about the resulting reconfiguration of Europe in the aftermath of the collapse of communism: Why did Central and East European states display such divergent outcomes of their socio-political transitions? Why did three of those states-Poland, Bulgaria, and Russia-differ so starkly in terms of the pace and extent of their integration into Europe? Rumena Filipova argues that Poland's, Bulgaria's, and Russia's dominating conceptions of national identity have principally shaped these countries' foreign policy behavior after 1989. Such an explanation of these three nations' diverging degrees of Europeanization stands in contrast to institutionalist-rationalist, interest-based accounts of democratic transition and international integration in post-communist Europe. She thereby makes a case for the need to include ideational factors into the study of International Relations and demonstrates that identities are not easily malleable and may not be as fluid as often assumed. She proposes a theoretical "middle-ground" argument that calls for "qualified post-positivism" as an integrated perspective that combines positivist and post-positivist orientations in the study of IR.- Shop: buecher

Flora: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 541min
Ten-year-old Helen and her summer guardian, Flora, are isolated together in Helen's decaying family house while her father is doing secret war work in Oak Ridge during the final months of World War II. At three Helen lost her mother and the beloved grandmother who raised her has just died. A fiercely imaginative child, Helen is desperate to keep her house intact with all its ghosts and stories. Flora, her late mother's twenty-two-year old first cousin, who cries at the drop of a hat, is ardently determined to do her best for Helen. Their relationship and its fallout, played against a backdrop of a lost America will haunt Helen for the rest of her life. This darkly beautiful audiobook about a child and a caretaker in isolation evokes shades of The Turn of the Screw and also harks back to Godwin's memorable novel of growing up, The Finishing School. With its house on top of a mountain and a child who may be a bomb that will one day go off, Flora tells a story of love, regret, and the things we can't undo. ungekürzt. Language: English. A Hero of Our Time , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 369min
Grigori Aleksandrovich Pechorin is an enigma: arrogant, cocky, melancholic, brave, cynic, romantic, loner, socialite, soldier, free soul, and yet, victim of the world, he eludes definition and remains a mystery to those who know him. Just who is he? And what does he hope to achieve? Evolving from first person to third person, and then into a diary, A Hero of Our Time takes on a variety of forms to interrogate Pechorin's cryptic character and his unusual philosophy, providing breathtaking descriptions of the Caucasus along the way. The novel has been hailed as an influence on such writers as Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov, and is a striking take on Lord Byron's "superfluous man"; it harks back to the teaching of Machiavelli, while anticipating the future work of Nietzsche. Hailed by Vladimir Nabokov as one of the greatest Russian novels, the book has been referenced in novels by Albert Camus and Ian Fleming, and films by Ingmar Bergman. Translators: J. H. Wisdom and Marr Murray PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio. ungekürzt. Language: English. Nam Contact
Renowned for his color images of the Vietnam War, Tim Page has now delved deep into his black-and-white archives of the conflict for the first time. Nam Contact harks back to an era when 36 frames on a roll of film had to tell the story of a particular action. Edited with Stephen Dupont, this book is Page's intricate look at his contact sheets, single images from those sheets, as well as the chronicle and notes of his diaries made about all he experienced during this intense period. It also contains letters from some of the most noted journalists of the time and further ephemera from what became known as the "first media war" and the first and last war without censorship.Page covered diverse actions with the South Vietnamese, Americans, Koreans and Australians. Nam Contact explores the period from 1965, before the marines had arrived, to 1969, when American troops numbered over 500,000. This was also the year Page's involvement in the Vietnam War ended, after being injured by a landmine. His images have since become iconic; as has the lifestyle he shared with his band of brothers, depicted in the television documentary Frankie's House (1992) as well as numerous movies about the conflict.- Shop: buecher

Unreliable: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 775min
Riotous and riveting, this is the story of a charming college professor who most definitely did not - but maybe did - kill his ex-wife. Or someone else. Or no one. Irby plays with the thriller trope in unimaginably clever ways. Edwin Stith, a failed novelist and college writing instructor in upstate New York, is returning home for the weekend to Richmond, Virginia, to celebrate his mother's wedding - to a much younger man. Edwin has a peculiar relationship with the truth. He is a liar who is brutally honest. He may or may not be sleeping with his students, he may or may not be getting fired, and he may or may not have killed his ex-wife, a lover, and his brand-new stepsister. Stith's dysfunctional homecoming leads him deep into a morass of long-gestating secrets and dangers, of old flames still burning strong and new passions ready to consume everything he holds dear. But family dysfunction is eclipsed only by Edwin's own, leading to profound suspense and utter hilarity. Lee Irby has crafted a sizzling modern classic of dark urges, lies, and secrets that harks back to the unsettling obsessions of Edgar Allan Poe - with a masterful ending that will have you thinking for days. ungekürzt. She knows she has the skills and determination, that's for sure. So she rises to the challenge. There is Michael Larchwood, younger son of the legendary Abe Larchwood. Second heir to the keys of the castle. He is also a notorious playboy who flirts with Jenna. At least four women in the last two years were fired after being seen leaving his apartment, and Jenna was in no way interested in making that list. And then there's the serious brother, Thomas Larchwood, who is a brilliant financial tactician and the youngest person ever to be named on Forbes most influential people's list. All that and he was only a few years older than Jenna. The more Michael flirts with Jenna, the more Thomas takes notice. Both brothers are off limits. Alan Bennett: Untold Stories Part 4: A Common Assault, Hörbuch, Digital, 144min
Untold Stories, Alan Bennett's first major collection of prose since his bestselling Writing Home, brings together the finest and funniest of his writing over the last ten years. After Untold Stories: Part 1: Stories, Part 2: The Diaries and Part 3: Written on the Body (all available from BBC Audiobooks), Part 4: A Common Assault contains two more reminiscences from Bennett's life and an essay on the class system. A Common Assault describes an incident in Italy when he was mugged, and found himself trying to give a statement to the police in bad Italian. The History Boys harks back once more to Bennett's time at school, and shows how the raw material of experience was eventually transformed into the highly-acclaimed stage play The History Boys. Arise, Sir..., finishes on a light-hearted note, in which Bennett muses on the Honours List in typically iconoclastic mode. Alan Bennett's television series Talking Heads has become a modern-day classic, as have many of his works for the stage, including Forty Years On, The Lady in the Van, The Madness of George III (together with the Oscar-nominated screenplay The Madness of King George) and an adaptation of The Wind in the Willows. The History Boys won the Evening Standard and Critics' Circle awards for Best Play, the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play, the South Bank Award and six Tony Awards. Language: English.
