Gideon v. Wainwright, Hörbuch, Digital, 179min
Clarence Earl Gideon was charged in Florida state court with a felony: having broken into and entered a poolroom with the intent to commit a misdemeanor offense. When he appeared in court without a lawyer, Gideon requested that the court appoint one for him. According to Florida state law, however, an attorney may only be appointed to an indigent defendant in capital cases, so the trial court did not appoint one. Gideon represented himself in trial. He was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. Gideon filed a habeas corpus petition in the Florida Supreme Court and argued that the trial court's decision violated his constitutional right to be represented by counsel. The Florida Supreme Court denied habeas corpus relief. Language: English. Narrator: Uncredited. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/oyez/000007/bk_oyez_000007_sample.mp3. Hard Times (AmazonClassics Edition) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 716min
In Coketown, England, wealthy retiree Thomas Gradgrind has founded a school based on his belief that life should be factual - not fanciful. Among his pupils are his children, Thomas and Louisa, who are raised on his teachings of rational self-interest and grow into loveless, despairing adults. As he bears witness to his children’s suffering, Gradgrind is forced to confront the dangers of his dispassionate, utilitarian philosophy. Published serially in 1854 and packed with page-turning cliff-hangers, Hard Times explores representatives of English society - the disappearing aristocracy, the growing middle class, indigent laborers, and nomadic circus people - as they navigate the ways of Victorian England during the Industrial Revolution. Sleight of Hand: A Detective Novel of 1929: The Cyrus Skeen Mysteries, Book 10 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 230min
It is October of 1929. The roaring '20s will end with the stock market crash heard round the world. The nation will absorb the consequences of the crash with great difficulty over the next decade, exacerbated by government fiscal policies. However, in the wake of the coming economic catastrophe, Cyrus Skeen, private detective, scion of East Coast wealth, and a figure in San Francisco society, is secure. He never bought on margin. Skeen has a reputation - some would say a notoriety - for justice, and for meting out rough desserts to crooks, criminals, and other realty-dodgers. This has made him admired by some and feared by others. Sharks, conmen, and scam artists approach him with caution - if they dare approach him at all. In this episode of Skeen's cases he is invited by a new political party to stand for the office of public defender in next month's city election, a city office established to provide legal representation to the poor and indigent. He declines the invitation, but strange things keep happening, such as the curious death of the current public defender and the odd behavior of the principals of the new party. Skeen's interest is piqued. He begins to investigate, learning eventually that his clues lead all the way back to Wisconsin. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gregg Rizzo. The Last Chronicle of Barset (Unabridged) (eBook, ePUB)
This carefully crafted ebook: "The Last Chronicle of Barset (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Last Chronicle of Barset concerns an indigent but learned clergyman, the Reverend Josiah Crawley, the perpetual curate of Hogglestock, as he stands accused of stealing a cheque. The novel is notable for the non-resolution of a plot continued from the previous novel in the series, The Small House at Allington, involving Lily Dale and Johnny Eames. Its main storyline features the courtship of the Rev. Mr Crawley's daughter, Grace, and Major Henry Grantly, son of the wealthy Archdeacon Grantly. The Archdeacon, although allowing that Grace is a lady, doesn't think her of high enough rank or wealth for his widowed son; his position is strengthened by the Reverend Mr Crawley's apparent crime.... Anthony Trollope (1815 - 1882) was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of his best-loved works, collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote perceptive novels on political, social, and gender issues, and on other topical matters. Trollope's literary reputation dipped somewhat during the last years of his life, but he regained the esteem of critics by the mid-twentieth century.- Shop: buecher
