Contractual Estoppel (eBook, ePUB)
The second edition of this book continues to offer the first and only comprehensive account of contractual estoppel, now made fully up to date with reference to the most recent cases. Contractual estoppel, a new and exciting development in the common law, is ever more widely employed and keeps showing itself of considerable practical utility. The book examines numerous judicial decisions which apply or discuss contractual estoppel, and offers a full and systematic exploration of its origin, principled basis, practical applications and limits. The doctrine continues to develop and the second edition tracks, catalogues, discusses and explains its multifarious applications, limits and niceties. In this title, the author, Alexander Trukhtanov, maintains the principal doctrinal claim of the first edition that contractual estoppel is a not misnomer, anomaly or distortion of reliance-based categories of estoppel, but its own category of legal estoppel. The book is a single point of reference for a systematic and organised exposition of the subject and an explanation of how it fits into existing law. It is practice-oriented but engages with important conceptual points. Contractual Estoppel will be of interest to practitioners, whether draftsmen, litigators or advocates, as well as academics and post-graduate students of contract law.- Shop: buecher

Darkest Hour: John Alite: Former Mafia Enforcer for John Gotti and the Gambino Crime Family , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 344min
A college baseball scholarship was his way out of the inner city, but his dreams of going pro were crushed by an arm injury. John Alite was forced to return home to the only life he knew, where having to live on the streets of New York meant one thing - earning how to survive. He was driven. He was extreme. He was feared. But most of all, he was loyal. From a young age, he found himself influenced by the wrong crowd. Enticed by the wealth, power, and prestige of the mafia, he immersed himself in a world that was foreign to most. A society where policies were enforced by instilling fear. Honor and loyalty were merely a misnomer. The cold, bitter truth was he was expendable, and his sworn allegiance was rewarded with betrayal. On the run and unable to trust anyone, John was finally forced to confront his own demon - himself. Facing the harsh realities of who he was and what he had done wasn't pretty, and he had some serious, life-altering decisions to make - ones that would come with a price. Through a life of heartache, betrayal, and loss comes a story of grace, healing, and redemption. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Joe Barrett. The Hundred Years War: The History of Europe's Most Famous War of the Middle Ages , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 87min
King of England, if you do not do these things, I am the commander of the military, and in whatever place I shall find your men in France, I will make them flee the country, whether they wish to or not. (Joan of Arc) Although it ended over 550 years ago, the Hundred Years' War still looms large in the historical consciousness of England and France, even if the name of the famous war is a misnomer. Actually a series of separate conflicts between the English and French monarchies, interspersed with periods of peace, its historical image is an odd one, in part because its origins were based on royal claims that dated back centuries, and the English and French remained adversaries for nearly 400 years after it ended. However, the war was actually transformative in many respects, and the impact it had on the geopolitical situation of Europe cannot be overstated. While some might think of the war as being a continuation of the feudal tradition of knights and peasants, the Hundred Years' War revolutionized Western European warfare, and it truly helped to usher in the concept of nationalism on the continent. In England it is remembered as a period of grandeur and success, even though the English lost the war and huge swathes of territory with it, while the French remember it as a strategic victory that ensured the continued independence of France and the denial of English hegemony. To understand the Hundred Years' War is to understand how England became politically severed from the continent, how the knightly chivalric tradition slid into irrelevance, and how battlefield dominance can still leave a nation a loser in war. ungekürzt. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 64min
I have gazed on the walls of impregnable Babylon along which chariots may race, and on the Zeus by the banks of the Alpheus, I have seen the hanging gardens, and the Colossus of the Helios, the great man-made mountains of the lofty pyramids, and the gigantic tomb of Mausolus; but when I saw the sacred house of Artemis that towers to the clouds, the others were placed in the shade, for the sun himself has never looked upon its equal outside Olympus. - Antipater of Sidon Nearly 2,000 years ago, two ancient writers named Antipater of Sidon and Philo of Byzantium authored antiquity's most well-known tour guides. After the two Greeks had traveled around the Mediterranean, they wrote of what they considered to be the classical world's greatest construction projects. While there is still some question as to who actually authored the text attributed to Philo and Antipater at the time of its creation, their lists ended up comprising the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, igniting interest in the ones they chosen and inspiring subsequent generations to identify their era's own Seven Wonders. Naturally, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World may be considered something of a misnomer. Only one still stands (the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt), all existed in the Hellenistic culture rather than all over the world, and relatively few people saw them or visited them. They were all architectural marvels of the late Classical period and all but two were created by the Greeks. All but one were in the Mediterranean area. Even so, they represented a widespread range of works and cultures and spread out across three different continents. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Paul Bloede. The Roma: The History of the Romani People and the Controversial Persecutions of Them Across Europe , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 95min
“We are all wanderers on this earth. Our hearts are full of wonder, and our souls are deep with dreams.” (Old Romani proverb)In the 21st century, cultural differences and individuality are often celebrated and protected across much of the world, and given society's conscientious awareness of such phenomena, it is, therefore, all the more surprising when considering the ignorance or indifference that the world, at large, exhibits toward the Romani people. Otherwise known as the “Roma” or by their popular misnomer “the gypsies”, the members of this highly undervalued and grossly misrepresented community have long been considered outcasts. More often than not, the Romani are branded by even those who fancy themselves liberals as “pikeys”, “gyppos”, and “gips”. There's also a regrettably common term “gypped” meaning “to cheat, or swindle” which perpetuates the damaging stereotype that the Roma are dishonest nuisances and societal pests. Even well-intentioned attempts to shine the spotlight on the community have sometimes been counterproductive, for they are often reduced to no more than exotic, whimsical entertainers for the privileged. According to a shocking email authored by an anonymous whistleblower in 2012, the staff at the Laurieston Job Center in Glasgow's Southside regularly referred to their Romani customers as “gypos, scum, beggars, suicide bombers, thieves, and pedophiles”. The whistleblower cited the staff's disturbing comments regarding an unnamed Romani woman who had brought her two children along to the job center: “The staff were all joking and saying they should sanction her for claiming whilst pimping out her kids. They then went on to make horrible remarks about the children, saying they were "mongs".On August 5th of the same year, over 700 far-right “activists” stormed the heavily Romani-populated Hungarian village of Devescer. “Gypsy criminals,” the mob chanted as they hurled rocks, paving stones, and ungekürzt. The Whole Town's Talking: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 727min
New York Times best sellerThe best-selling author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is at her superb best in this fun-loving, moving novel about what it means to be truly alive.Winner of the Southern Book Prize Elmwood Springs, Missouri, is a small town like any other, but something strange is happening at the cemetery. Still Meadows, as it’s called, is anything but still. Original, profound, The Whole Town’s Talking, a novel in the tradition of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town and Flagg’s own Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven, tells the story of Lordor Nordstrom, his Swedish mail-order bride, Katrina, and their neighbors and descendants as they live, love, die, and carry on in mysterious and surprising ways. Lordor Nordstrom created, in his wisdom, not only a lively town and a prosperous legacy for himself but also a beautiful final resting place for his family, friends, and neighbors yet to come. “Resting place” turns out to be a bit of a misnomer, however. Odd things begin to happen, and it starts the whole town talking. With her wild imagination, great storytelling, and deep understanding of folly and the human heart, the beloved Fannie Flagg tells an unforgettable story of life, afterlife, and the remarkable goings-on of ordinary people. In The Whole Town’s Talking, she reminds us that community is vital, life is a gift, and love never dies.Praise for The Whole Town’s Talking:“A witty multigenerational saga.... [Fannie] Flagg’s down-home wisdom, her affable humor and her long view of life offer a pleasant respite in nerve-jangling times.” (People) “Fannie Flagg at her best.” (The Florida Times-Union) “If there’s one thing Fannie Flagg can do better than anybody else, it’s tell a story, and she outdoes herself in The Whole Town’s Talking.... Brilliant...equally on the level as her famous Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caf ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kimberly Farr. The Books of Maccabees: Containing the Books of 1, 2, 3, and 4 Maccabees , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 363min
1 Maccabees - The book presents the Jewish leaders Judas, Jonathan, and Simon as devout people and has little sympathy for people who favor Hellenization, but nowhere does the text mentions divine intervention. Chapter one to two: The Hellenization of Judah and the non-violent resistance by Mattathias is covered; Chapter three to nine: Tells of the Military actions by Judas the Maccabaean ("battle hammer:): after 166 where the temple is purified; Chapter nine to 12: recounts the continued warfare led by Judas' brother Jonathan (160-143), who, benefiting from wars of succession in the Seleucid Empire, restores the fortunes of the Jewish nationalists and adds to their territories; Chapter 13-16: The third brother, Simon, achieves political independence and founds the Hasmonaean dynasty.2 Maccabees - The book has a much greater interest in theology than first Maccabees. Second Maccabees is not as well written and has a less polished form. The pagans are defined as "blasphemous and barbarous nations", but there are also severe censures of apostate Jews. We find a theological features in second Maccabees such as the resurrection of the body in 7.11; 14.46. This stand in stark contrast first to Wisdom and Philo, both of which teach the immortality of the soul. We have concepts of eternal life and death and in 12.43 the intercession of the living for the dead, an element on which the Catholic church bases the belief in purgatory and prayers for the dead.3 Maccabees - The book is a misnomer because the book has nothing to do with the Maccabees, who are never mentioned in it. The book is a story about a situation in which the Jewish people, this time in Egypt, were in danger of being annihilated by a Hellenistic monarch, who was attempting to top their religious convictions and practices.4 Maccabees - The book belongs to the Maccabees series only because it deals with the beginning of the persecution o ungekürzt. Fifty Shades of Jungle Fever: The Ghetto Girl Romance Quadrilogy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 533min, (USK 18)
Keisha Beale, a street-wise Chicago south-sider two years out of DePaul University, is a quarter million dollars in start-up capital away from realizing her dream of owning a recording studio/record store. She takes the place of her more business-savvy partner in a meeting with Tristan White himself, the venture capitalist they've targeted to fund their business. A bi-racial, African American and Brazilian woman with a troubled past, Keisha has been so focused on her business pursuits that her love life has been non-existent. Tristan White is the devastatingly handsome, 32-year-old CEO of White Enterprises, the firm he built using only the inheritance his mother left him to prove to his father he had the mettle to do it alone. He comes from a long line of wealth, and lives the life of a "one-percenter" on Chicago's Gold Coast. Tristan is accustomed to controlling every aspect of his life given his birth into a world of white privilege. When Keisha and Tristan's worlds collide, sparks fly, and a fever is ignited in them both that they have never experienced before. It turns out they each have secrets, but together, in the unorthodox arrangement Tristan proposes, they discover passions they never knew they had. The Ghetto Girl title is, in all truthfulness, a misnomer. Keisha Beale is a highly-educated young woman who just happens to have been born on the other side of the socio-economic tracks. She embraces all of who she is, and navigates almost effortlessly in both worlds. Erotic, amusing, and in places hilarious, the Ghetto Girl Romance Quadrilogy is a parody with a new take on a Fifty Shades type story that will take you even further into the BDSM word, and promises to make the vanilla original Fifty Shades more colorful. ungekürzt. Books of 1, 2, 3, and 4 Maccabees, The Septuagint Version , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 393min
The Septuagint version of the Maccabees in English. 1 Maccabees: Although the book presents the Jewish leaders Judas, Jonathan, and Simon as devout people and has little sympathy for people who favor Hellenization, it must be noted that he nowhere mentions divine intervention. The author must have been a cultivated Jew living in Judah, and can be dated to c.100 B.C.E. 2 Maccabees is not as well-written and has a less polished form. The pagans are defined as "blasphemous and barbarous nations" in 10.4, but there are also severe censures of apostate Jews, of whom there must therefore have been considerable numbers. We find theological features in 2 Maccabees such as the resurrection of the body in 7.11; 14.46. This stands in stark contrast first to Wisdom and Philo, both of which teach the immortality of the soul. In 7.28, there appears for the first time in Hebrew thought that the doctrine, which will later be called creatio ex nihilo, which is the belief that creation, and thus all things created, was brought about out of nothing. 3 Maccabees: The title of 3 Maccabees is a misnomer because the book has nothing to do with the Maccabees, who are never mentioned in it. The book is a story about a situation in which the Jewish people, this time in Egypt, were in danger of being annihilated by a Hellenistic monarch, who was attempting to top their religious convictions and practices. The book was composed in Greek and relates a story set in the time of Ptolemy IV Philopater (221-203 B.C.E). 4 Maccabees belongs to the Maccabees series only because it deals with the beginning of the persecution of Jews by Antiochus IV Epiphanes. It possibly was written during the reign of the emperor Caligula (C.E. 37.) The work's main religious theme is that the martyr's sufferings expunged the sins of the entire Jewish people through a type of propitiation. The Maccabees books were preserved only by the Christian church. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mel Jackson.
