Ihr 1988 erschienener Debütroman "Nervous Conditions" (dt. "Aufbrechen", 2019) wird2018 von der BBC in die Liste der 100 wichtigsten Bücher aufgenommen, die die Welt geprägt haben. Der Film "Neria", für den sie 1993 die Story schreibt, zählt zu den beliebtesten Filmen in Simbabwe. Ihr neuer Roman "This Mournable Body" (erscheint im September 2021 unter dem Titel "Überleben" auf Deutsch) wird 2020 für die Shortlist des Booker Prize nominiert. Neben ihrer Arbeit als Autorin und Filmemacherin engagiert sich Tsitsi Dangarembga seit vielen Jahren für Freiheits- und Frauenrechte sowie politische Veränderung in Simbabwe. 2021 erhält sie den PEN Pinter Prize sowie den PEN International Award for Freedom of Expression, mit dem Autorinnen und Autoren ausgezeichnet werden, die trotz Verfolgung ihr Schreiben fortführen. Am 24. Oktober 2021 wird ihr der Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels verliehen.
