Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Hörbuch, Digital, 176min
Roosevelt's presidency was one of the most eventful in U.S. history. He took office in the midst of economic crisis: the stock market had crashed and millions of Americans were unemployed. He demonstrated an optimism and resolve that garnered quick support for his administration and for the programs that he called the New Deal. The first president truly to understand the power of the new mass media, Roosevelt rallied the nation through "fireside chats" on the radio and speeches on movie house newsreels. He was elected to an unprecedented four terms in office and helped the United States become the most influential world power. His accomplishments in leading the nation through depression and world war resonate today. Language: English. Narrator: Richard Rohan. The Politics of Upheaval (eBook, ePUB)
In the third volume of his series on Franklin Roosevelt, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian focuses on the turbulent final years of FDR's first term.A measure of economic recovery revived political conflict and emboldened Roosevelt's critics to denounce "that man in the White house." To his left were demagogues-Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and Dr. Townsend. To his right were the champions of the old order-ex-president Herbert Hoover, the American Liberty League, and the august Supreme Court. For a time, the New Deal seemed to lose its momentum. But in 1935 FDR rallied and produced a legislative record even more impressive than the Hundred Days of 1933-a set of statutes that transformed the social and economic landscape of American life. In 1936 FDR coasted to reelection on a landslide. Schlesinger has his usual touch with colorful personalities and draws a warmly sympathetic portrait of Alf M. Landon, the Republican candidate of 1936."One of the most important historical enterprises of our time."-Saturday Review "Vividly portrays…the concluding years of Roosevelt's first term…[and] the sweep and excitement of an era more historically dramatic than most."-Time- Shop: buecher

The Mill Girls , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 454min
I dragged my heels all the way to the mill. ‘I can’t do it!’ I sulked. Mother sighed and shook her head. My heart sank. Of course, I’d seen the mill hundreds of times before, but now it was different - now, I was going in. I’d never seen a place so depressing; I wanted to cry. With tales from hardworking Audrey and mischievous Maureen to high-spirited Doris and dedicated Marjorie, The Mill Girls is an evocative story of hardship and friendship from when cotton was still king. Through the eyes of these northern mill girls, we are offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives of ordinary women who rallied together, nattered over the beamers, and, despite the difficult conditions, weaved, packed, and laughed to keep the cotton mills spinning. ungekürzt. Solomon's Island , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 123min
The Internet says the ancient ruins of Jerusalem's first temple are in the South Pacific; Matthew Fishbane went to find them. A random email containing what purports to be news of the Lost Temple of Solomon sends day-dreaming New York-based reporter Matthew Fishbane on a journey halfway around the world - to the Solomon Islands. There, in the remote jungles of Malaita, he encounters self-described Melanesian Israelites with apocalyptic visions, dreamers guarding archaeological ruins of unknown but apparently ancient provenance, and a warlord who rallied an ethnic militia under the Star of David, as well as canny modern politicians who are leveraging the tiny island nation's greatest asset - sovereignty - for development assistance from the modern Jewish state. When the stray rumors that float across our laptop and iPhone screens are followed to their source, reality turns out to be even wilder and more compelling than fiction. ungekürzt. Language: English. Operation Sea Lion: An Account of the German Preparations and the British Counter-Measures , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 730min
On 16 July 1940, Hitler issued Directive No. 16, setting in motion Operation Sea Lion: his plan to invade England. The success of Operation Sea Lion hinged entirely on the destruction of the RAF and the Royal Navy, but even as Hitler's plans swung into action and England, barely recovered from Dunkirk, rallied her defences, the Battle of Britain began and in just a few months Germany had lost all hope of dominating England's skies and with it, the key to the invasion. On 17 September, 1940, Hitler postponed Operation Sea Lion indefinitely and the entire episode faded from memory. It would be another 17 years before Peter Fleming rescued the story from military archives and, together with the recollections of those involved, pieced together the dramatic preparations for what could have been one of the most significant and potentially world-changing battles in history. ungekürzt.
