A true story of growing up on a farm in Ohio in the 1930s. The author was one of 10 children in this family. Excerpt: "On Saturday night we always went to Hicksville. The streets were packed full of people who came to shop, visit friends, or go to the Huber Theater to see a movie. It was hard to get a parking place if you didn't go early. "Dad gave each kid a quarter. We got in line at the theater to see Roy Rogers or Gene Autry, the singing cowboy, in the movies. It cost a dime to get in and a nickel for a box of popcorn. "After the show was over, we would walk around the streets several times to see who was there. Then we would buy a double-dip ice cream cone and still have a nickel left to buy candy. "During the war years, when we went to Hicksville, almost all of the young men were in uniform. The streets were full of sailors, soldiers, and airmen. It was a very romantic time. "I remember hearing President Franklin Roosevelt give his famous speech when he declared war on Japan, after they bombed Pearl Harbor. I was 10 years old. We were all in the living room, listening to our radio. I can still hear his voice. "After the war started, the government rationed gas, sugar, coffee, shoes, and meat. They issued books with stamps in them for each item that was rationed. Each adult and child got a book. You had to have a stamp, or they wouldn't permit you to buy the item." The book includes many vintage photographs of the author and her family as they were growing up during the Great Depression and World War II era. ungekürzt. Language: English. Anna Del Conte brought Italian cooking to Britain at a time when the nearest most of us came to pasta was a Heinz spaghetti hoop. Sharply observant, evocative, full of tastes and talk of food, hers is a delicious, poignant memoir of an unusual life and the food she loves to cook, which launched a culinary revolution. She arrived in England in 1949 when much of Britain was a culinary wasteland, married an Englishman, and stayed on. Her memories of the time are vividly, hilarious preserved - from the joys of un-rationed horse meat to tomato soup at Lyons Corner House. While bringing up her children, she wrote books that inspired a new generation of cooks. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rula Lenska. Adam Buxton takes a sideways look at some of our confusing modern ideas and explains why you're definitely doing it all wrong.Across five episodes he explores the worlds of work, parenting, diet, the environment and family. Is the idea of a 'dream job' - one that inspires and fulfils us and makes our lives worth living - really possible? Does your toddler eat strictly rationed organic produce, or are they allowed to eat what they want? Does installing solar panels and despairing over plastic bottles make a difference if we continue to jet off on holidays and eat imported guava?! It doesn't really matter what you answer to these incessant questions, as long as you know that you are wrong, wrong, wrong! Produced by Emily Knight.  Language: English. At age 17, people receive their career assignments chosen for them by a government body. Forced to work at the Waste Management Plant because she was declared too individualistic, Dana finds herself surrounded by death and brutality. Random House presents the audiobook edition of Rosie: Scenes from a Vanished Life, written and read by Rose Tremain.  Rose Tremain grew up in postwar London, a city of grey austerity, still partly in ruins, where both food and affection were fiercely rationed. The girl known then as ‘Rosie’ and her sister, Jo, spent their days longing for their grandparents' farm, buried deep in the Hampshire countryside, a green paradise of feasts and freedom, where they could at last roam and dream. But when Rosie is 10 years old, everything changes. She and Jo lose their father, their London house, their school, their friends and - most agonisingly of all - their beloved Nanny, Vera, the only adult to have shown them real love and affection.  Briskly dispatched to a freezing boarding school in Hertfordshire, they once again feel like imprisoned castaways. But slowly the teenage Rosie escapes from the cold world of the '50s, into a place of inspiration and mischief, of loving friendships and dedicated teachers, where a young writer is suddenly ready to be born. ungekürzt. The raucous and randy adventures of a stateside soldier during World War IISergeant Dan Miller wanted to be a flying ace, but the air force grounded him for poor vision. To make matters worse, when the myopic Miller travels home to Minneapolis on furlough, he finds the local “feather merchants” - aka civilians - breaking all the wartime rules. They’re guzzling black-market gas, hoarding rationed food, and listening to suspiciously expensive radios. But the most troubling news of all arrives when Sergeant Dan’s main squeeze, the voluptuous Estherlee McCracken, declares that she wants nothing to do with a pencil-pushing GI.The night after he gets dumped, Sergeant Dan seeks solace in watered-down whiskeys and a chorus line of ladies dancing in red, white, and blue G-strings. A friend introduces the sad-sack noncom as Robert Jordan, dynamiter of bridges, and before Sergeant Dan can stop that bell from tolling, he’s the most celebrated man in town. What follows is a hysterical comedy of errors as our hero tries to outrun his patriotic admirers, win back Estherlee’s love, and avoid a court martial.  ungekürzt. Language: English.
