Actors Edward Norton and Sidney Poitier on this edition of Fresh Air as they both discuss their careers. Norton is co-starring in the film The Score along with Robert DeNiro and Marlon Brando. His first major role was in the 1996 film Primal Fear as a quiet, stuttering altar boy accused of a brutal murder. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal. Norton went on to roles in Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You, The People vs. Larry Flint, and Fight Club. He was nominated for an Academy Award again for his role in American History X. Poitier is the leading African-American actor of his generation. He was the first, and so far the only, African-American to win the Academy Award for best actor, which he did in 1963 for his performance in Lilies of the Field. His other films include The Defiant Ones, A Patch of Blue, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and To Sir, With Love. His autobiography is The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography. Photographer Joel Meyerowitz and writer Alec Wilkinson on this edition of Fresh Air. Since September 11th, Meyerowitz has taken over 7000 photographs of Ground Zero. He gained unlimited access to the site and did so in conjunction with the Museum of the City of New York. A selection of those pictures can be seen in the May 20 issue of the New Yorker. Wilkinson is the author of new memoir, My Mentor: A Young Man's Friendship with William Maxwell (Houghton Mifflin) about his relationship with writer and editor Maxwell. Maxwell was fiction editor for the New Yorker from 1936-1976 and worked with such authors as J.D. Salinger, John Cheever, John Updike, Eudora Welty and scores of others. Maxwell was the author of a number of novels as well as several short story collections. Wilkinson is a staff writer for the New Yorker, and has been there since 1980. He's the author of several books including, Midnights, Moonshine, and Big Sugar. We'll listen to a rebroadcast of a 1995 interview with Maxwell and to an interview with Wilkinson shortly after Maxwell's August 2000 death. Film director Joel Schumacher and actor Greg Kinnear on this edition of Fresh Air. Joel Schumacher's films include St. Elmo's Fire, The Client, A Time to Kill, and Batman Forever. His latest film, Tigerland, is now out on video. It's about a group of army recruits in training who are about to be shipped off to Vietnam. The film was made on a low budget in 28 days, on 16 millimeter film and mostly with hand-held cameras. In making the film, Schumacher was inspired by the Dogma 95 movement by Danish film director Lars von Trier. The movement rejects Hollywood artifice, abandoning the use of elaborate lighting, special effects, and music. (REBROADCAST from 10/9/00) Greg Kinnear's newest film is Someone Like You. He plays a soap opera star in the film Nurse Betty, which is now out on video. Kinnear's other films include As Good as It Gets (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award) and Sabrina. This performance of the Rachmaninoff Sonta for Cello and Piano is the winner of the McGraw Hill Young Artists Award and is taken from the original broadcast on WQXR New York City May 18, 1988. with an introduction by Robert Sherman. Also included are solo piano works by Rachmanninoff and 'bonus tracks' of solo piano music by Liszt and Chopin. Paul Bisaccia has performed concerts on four continents. He graduated summa cum laude and first in his class from the Hartt School. His vast repertoire includes the great piano classics and he was the first artist to record the complete solo piano music of Gershwin. His PBS television show 'Gershwin by Bisaccia' has been seen by millions and was dubbed into Mandarin Chinese for broadcast in Asia. Michael Feinstein calls 'Paul Bisaccia and the Great American Piano', his second television show for PBS, 'imaginative, fun, well played and totally satisfying.' His third television show, Chopin by Bisaccia has been included in his newest DVD release Bisaccia on Television. The Hartt School honored Paul with the Alumnus of the Year Award and the Governor of Connecticut proclaimed Paul Bisaccia Day in the State of Connecticut. PBS celebrated the day with a rebroadcast of his television shows. Bisaccia was also honored to perform Rhapsody in Blue in inauguration ceremonies for the new theater on the site of Aeolian Hall in New York, where Gershwin himself first performed his legendary masterpiece. Born in Rochester, N.Y., Mr. Pegis is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music and has studied with Allan Harris, Lynn Harrell, Robert Sylvester, Orlando Cole, David Finckel and David Wells. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Concert Atlantique International Debut competition in Geneva Switzerland and first prize in the Music Teachers National Association competition.
