A Magician Among the Spirits , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 583min
I have spent a goodly part of my life in study and research. During the last 30 years, I have read every single piece of literature on the subject of spiritualism that I could. I have accumulated one of the largest libraries in the world on psychic phenomena, spiritualism, magic, witchcraft, demonology, evil spirits, etc - some of the material going back as far as 1489. And I doubt if any one in the world has so complete a library on modern spiritualism, but nothing I ever read concerning the so-called spiritualistic phenomena has impressed me as being genuine. It is true that some of the things I read seemed mystifying, but I question if they would be were they to be reproduced under different circumstances, under test conditions, and before expert mystifiers and open-minded committees. Mine has not been an investigation of a few days or weeks or months, but one that has extended over 30 years and in that time, I have not found one incident that savored of the genuine. If there had been any real unalloyed demonstration to work on - one that did not reek of fraud, one that could not be reproduced by earthly powers - then there would be something for a foundation, but up to the present time, everything that I have investigated has been the result of deluded brains or those which were too actively and intensely willing to believe. Patience with God: Faith for People Who Don't Like Religion (or Atheism) , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 452min
Frank Schaeffer has a problem with Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, Dennett, and the rest of the New Atheists—the self-anointed “Brights”. He also has a problem with the Rick Warrens and Tim LaHayes of the world—the religious fundamentalists. The problem is that he doesn’t see much of a difference between the two camps. As Schaeffer puts it, they “often share the same fallacy: truth claims that reek of false certainties. I believe that there is an alternative that actually matches the way life is lived rather than how we usually talk about belief.” Sparing no one and nothing, including himself and his fiery evangelical past, and invoking subtleties too easily ignored by the pontificators, Schaeffer adds much-needed nuance to the existing religious conversation. “I discovered from the emails I’ve been inundated with since my memoir was published that there are more of us perplexed former (or currently) religiously inclined or religiously raised folks on a journey from past certainties to points unknown than I’d been aware of. We want to have faith in God in spite of our bad experiences with religion, oppressive family relationships, and/or doubts and questions. We too worry that we have been hoodwinked by a fairy tale. I hope that this audiobook will provide a meeting place for those of us who count ourselves among the scattered members of what I’ll call the Church of Hopeful Uncertainty." ungekürzt. Wait, how did I make you quit? You reek of smoke, Sebastian replied starting to get annoyed with talking to drunken Danny. He rolled down Danny's side window a crack to try to get rid of some of the smoke smell."Oh, do I? My friends were smoking around me at the party. Can I shower at your place to get rid of the smell?" Danny asked avoiding the first question entirely."You can, but you avoided the first question, Danny.""Oh, what was it again?""How did I make you quit smoking?""Oh right, that. Well, ever since I found out that you didn't like the smell of smoke I've tried a couple times to quit, and this would be the longest I've gone so far without a smoke.""Why did it matter to you that I didn't like the smell of smoke?""Well, that's because I like you," Danny replied simply smiling like an idiot as he slowly began to nod off.Danny will do whatever it takes to protect his younger brother, but when he meets Sebastian, the new kid in town, he questions everything that he was led to believe. There is a shadow over Sebastian as he tries his best to move on and forget the traumatic incident that had happened back in his hometown.Being forced to work together Danny brings back the worst parts of Sebastian's past, and Danny rediscovers his own closeted skeletons that Sebastian had brought back to life. Trigger warning: There are some graphic scenes and depictions of alcoholism, physical abuse, kidnapping, substance abuse, and self-harm, to name a few. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Fembot of Norway: RILF; Robots I'd Like to Find, Book 33 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 192min
Coke cans, pizza boxes, and darkness surround Bill Blakley. At 46, Bill’s will became dead to the complexities of 21st century living. The world was again at war, the stock market recently crashed, and he wants to expatriate to Norway. Within the dark confides of his two room apartment, peace, love, and sex all coexist without the price of mendacity. The white walls are chipped with rust, mildew and insects. The black mold carpet reek of chewing tobacco, red wine, and urine. For Bill had fired his maid two years ago because of "creative differences".Life, achieving even an emotion, or tasting food, friendships, family were all just a shallow pool to him. But he did have his faith in himself, in the Mother Mary. His mom and dad dead. His family rejects his call for unity years ago. Classmates became creeps, and the press hounded his trail. Bill won the Pulitzer Prize for what he calls "Bullshit" two years ago. 2020, after 14 years in the service, Billy decided to watch porno all day and write all night. Traffic shotbys on the freeway are the norm. Most people even in the burbs turn off all lights at night, and had armed guards outside the front and back porches.“What in the hell is wrong with CNN (Constant Nazi News Bill's nickname for this news station)! All this spin meister bit with the news!" And people wonder why people are the way they are!” Bill said with a sigh of disbelief. A small 60 watt bulb was the only companion he knew, besides the Internet. For he had become dependent on this wonder to provide the utilities, the avenue to travel, and the supply to his daily necessities.“For those of you who enjoy futuristic science fiction, exploring the human race merging with Robots, this book is for you. ungekürzt. In Case We Die , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 438min
Danny Bland's fictional novel about a doomed junkie couple is given depth by his firsthand experiences in the '90s grunge rock scene. "It wasn't the pounding headache or the all-too-familiar taste of blood in my mouth that woke me that morning, but the stink of cat piss. They all have cats. Cats and bad tattoos and mops of dyed black hair that reek of cigarettes and watermelon Bubblicious." This debut novel by veteran Seattle musician Danny Bland follows a pair of outsiders who find themselves locked in the palpable, dizzy grunge-rock scene of early '90s in Seattle. Vulnerable to the high-relief of heroin addiction, Bland's characters - Charlie Hyatt and Carrie Finch - are unapologetic protagonists whose epiphanies are as blinding as their weaknesses. Finch - 21, beautiful, and dangerous - drowns out the voices in her head and the consequences of a misled life with electric guitars, booze, and petulant misbehavior. Her single abiding faith takes the form of an unlikely savior - '60s psychedelic musician Roky Erikson. At the ripe old age of 28, Hyatt attempts to make sense of the cards he has been dealt: a miserable job in a porn shop, a drug habit he cannot afford, and the wildly unstable woman he had chosen to love. Two damaged people can balance a seesaw for a long time, even finding the illusion of safety; but when one gets off unannounced, the other will fall. As Finch finds sobriety, her sanity and her relationship with Hyatt falter until an inevitable event brings the two back together a decade later. Additional narrators include Wayne Kramer, Eddie Spaghetti, Rob Delaney, Lou Beach, Jacob Pitts, Blag Dahlia, Tony Fitzpatrick, Mark Boone Jr., Lee Ving, Tom Hansen, John Sinclair, Dana Gould, Rachel Flotard, and Danny Bland. ungekürzt. The La Brea Tar Pits: The History and Legacy of One of the World’s Most Famous Fossil Sites , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 90min
Even at a distance, the acrid stench of asphalt and sulfur singes the hairs of people’s nostrils, and when the blustering winds subside, the potent miasma lingers in the air. To the untrained eye, the La Brea Tar Pits seem to be nothing more than simply pools of thick, viscous black sludge, its obsidian-like surface bestrewn with an assortment of autumn leaves and dirt. Gooey methane bubbles spurt up periodically, shattering the glassy veneer of the grease-black lakes, and the shiny bubbles swell to varying sizes and wiggle from side to side before popping, the sticky collapse almost reminiscent of cracking open a chocolate molten lava cake. This black sludge might seem rather unremarkable after a few moments, as it appears to just sit there in its idle state, but in fact, the seemingly innocuous bubbles are symptomatic of the treacly dark substance lurking on the bottom of the pit. The pit’s contents have spelled the doom for a countless number of creatures both large and small, from legions of insects to mighty mastodons, mammoths, and snarling saber-toothed cats from the Pleistocene Era. Of course, this is what makes the area a natural landmark in the first place, and today the La Brea Tar Pits are considered by many scientists to be among the greatest finds in modern history. Technically, these lustrous lakes of ink-black, while branded “tar,” are in actuality pools of asphalt seeps that have remained in place for several millennia, gushing forth from a natural subterranean petroleum spring underneath the city of Los Angeles known as the “Salt Lake Oil Field.” Needless to say, the tar pits are a far cry from the glittering, crystalline ponds cooled by the shade of surrounding palm trees found throughout the City of Angels. Indeed, the pungent reek of asphalt, pulsing methane bubbles, and their hauntingly black surfaces, making it impossible to gauge the true depth of the asphalt abysses, should have seemingly served as clear deterrents to ungekürzt. Agile Estimating and Planning
The first step to project success is accurate estimating and realistic planning. Projects with unrealistic expectations affixed to them are likely to derail at an early stage. This book shows the software practitioner how to effectively estimate and properly plan a project within an agile context. The book's content is suitable for projects using any agile or semi-agile process (such as Extreme Programming, Scrum, Feature Driven Development, Crystal, Adaptive Software Development, DSDM or even the IBM Rational Unified Process). The ideas in this book will work with any iterative development process, which greatly broadens the target audience beyond the traditional agile community. Each chapter is supported by a summary and a set of questions that allows readers to assess their ability to estimate and plan a project. The result is an engaging read with pearls of wisdom that can be applied to the reader's next project. Product Description Praise for Agile Estimating and Planning Traditional, deterministic approaches to planning and estimating simply don't cut it on the slippery slopes of today's dynamic, change-driven projects. Mike Cohn's breakthrough book gives us not only the philosophy, but also the guidelines and a proven set of tools that we need to succeed in planning, estimating, and scheduling projects with a high uncertainty factor. At the same time, the author never loses sight of the need to deliver business value to the customer each step of the way. -Doug DeCarlo, author of eXtreme Project Management: Using Leadership, Principles and Tools to Deliver Value in the Face of Volatility (Jossey-Bass, 2004) We know how to build predictive plans and manage them. But building plans that only estimate the future and then embrace change, challenge most of our training and skills. In Agile Estimating and Planning, Mike Cohn once again fills a hole in the Agile practices, this time by showing us a workable approach to Agile estimating and planning. Mike delves into the nooks and crannies of the subject and anticipates many of the questions and nuances of this topic. Students of Agile processes will recognize that this book is truly about agility, bridging many of the practices between Scrum and ExtremeProgramming. -Ken Schwaber, Scrum evangelist, Agile Alliance cofounder, and signatory to the Agile Manifesto In Agile Estimating and Planning, Mike Cohn has, for the first time, brought together most everything that the Agile community has learned about the subject. The book is clear, well organized, and a pleasant and valuable read. It goes into all the necessary detail, and at the same time keeps the reader's burden low. We can dig in as deeply as we need to, without too much detail before we need it. The book really brings together everything we have learned about Agile estimation and planning over the past decade. It will serve its readers well. -Ron Jeffries, www.XProgramming.com, author of Extreme Programming Installed (Addison-Wesley, 2001) and Extreme Programming Adventures in C# (Microsoft Press, 2004) Agile Estimating and Planning provides a view of planning that's balanced between theory and practice, and it is supported by enough concrete experiences to lend it credibility. I particularly like the quote 'planning is a quest for value.' It points to a new, more positive attitude toward planning that goes beyond the 'necessary evil' view that I sometimes hold. -Kent Beck, author of Extreme Programming Explained, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley, 2005) Up-front planning is still the most critical part of software development. Agile software development requires Agile planning techniques. This book shows you how to employ Agile planning in a succinct, practical, and easy-to-follow manner. -Adam Rogers, Ultimate Software Mike does a great follow-up to User Stories Applied by continuing to provide Agile teams with the practical approaches and techniques to increase agility. In this book, Mike provides time-proven and well-tested methods for being successful with the multiple levels of planning and estimating required by Agile. This book is the first to detail the disciplines of Agile estimating and planning, in ways that rival my 1980 civil engineering texts on CPM Planning and Estimating. -Ryan Martens, President and Founder, Rally Software Development Corporation With insight and clarity, Mike Cohn shows how to effectively produce software of high business value. With Agile estimation and planning, you focus effort where it really counts, and continue to do so as circumstances change. -Rick Mugridge, Rimu Research Ltd., and lead author, Fit for Developing Software (Prentice Hall, 2005) Finally! The groundbreaking book my clients have been clamoring for! Agile Estimating and Planning demystifies the process of defining, driving, and delivering great software that matters to the business. Mike's clarity, insight, and experience leap out through every page of this book, offering an approach that is relevant and immediately useful to all members of an Agile project. -Kert D. Peterson, President, Enterprise Agile Group, LLC This isn't yet another generic book on Agile software development. Agile Estimating and Planning fills a gap left by most of the other books and gives you important, practical, down-to-earth techniques needed to be successful on Agile development projects. -Steve Tockey, Principal Consultant, Construx Software Estimation, planning, and tracking is a trinity. If you don't do one of them, you don't need the other two. This book provides very practical knowledge for estimation, planning, prioritizing, and tracking. It should be compulsory subject matter for project managers and their teams, even if they hesitate to call themselves Agile. -Niels Malotaux, Project Coach Effective planning is an important, but often misunderstood, part of any successful Agile project. With Agile Estimating and Planning, Mike Cohn has given us a definitive guide to a wide range of Agile estimating and planning practices. With his clear and practical style, Mike not only explains how to successfully get started planning an Agile project, but also provides a wealth of tips and advice for improving any team's Agile planning process. This book is a must-read for managers, coaches, and members of Agile teams. -Paul Hodgetts, Agile coach and CEO, Agile Logic Mike's writing style captures the essence of agility-just the right amount of information to bring clarity to the reader. This book provides an excellent guide for all Agile practitioners, both seasoned and novice. -Robert Holler, President and CEO, VersionOne, LLC It is as if Mike took the distilled knowledge regarding planning and estimation of a great Agile developer (which he is) and laid out all he knows in an easily understandable manner. More importantly, he has a great mix of concepts with real-world examples finished off with a case study so the reader can relate the information to their own situation. Unless you are already an expert Agile planner and estimator, this book is for you. -Alan Shalloway, CEO, Senior Consultant, Net Objectives, and coauthor of Design Patterns Explained, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley, 2005) Although I had plenty of XP experience before trying out Mike Cohn's Agile planning practices, the effectiveness of the practical and proven techniques in this book blew me away! The book recognizes that people, not tools or processes, produce great software, and that teams benefit most by learning about their project and their product as they go. The examples in the book are concrete, easily grasped, and simply reek of common sense. This book will help teams (whether Agile or not) deliver more value, more often, and have fun doing it! Whether you're a manager or a programmer, a tester or a CEO, part of an Agile team, or just looking for a way to stamp out chaos and death marches, this book will guide you. -Lisa Crispin, coauthor of Testing Extreme Programming (Addison-Wesley, 2003) Mike Cohn does an excellent job demonstrating how an Agile approach can address issues of risk and uncertainty in order to provide more meaningful estimates and plans for software projects. -Todd Little, Senior Development Manager, Landmark Graphics Mike Cohn explains his approach to Agile planning, and shows how 'critical chain' thinking can be used to effectively buffer both schedule and features. As with User Stories Applied, this book is easy to read and grounded in real-world experience. -Bill Wake, author o Features + Benefits Goes beyond the strategy of just enough planning and estimating, and shows readers how to make agile practices truly work organizationally. ° Save time, conserve organizational resources, and manage software projects more efficiently by learning to anticipate future needs ° Key points are supported by case studies derived from real-world projects ° Teaches the nuts and bolts of estimating a project, an iteration, or even a task -- and teaches a variety of approaches to effective estimating Backcover Praise for Agile Estimating and Planning Traditional, deterministic approaches to planning and estimating simply don't cut it on the slippery slopes of today's dynamic, change-driven projects.
