Full of adventure, mishaps and audacious attempts at cheating, the first Tour de France in 1903 was a colourful affair. Its riders included characters like Maurice "The White Bulldog" Garin, an Italian-born Frenchman whose parents were said to have swapped him for a round of cheese in order to smuggle him into France as a 14-year-old; Hippolyte Aucouturier, who, with his jersey of horizontal stripes and handlebar moustache, looked like the villain from a Buster Keaton movie; and amateurs like Jean Dargassies, a blacksmith who had no idea what he was letting himself in for. Cyclists of the time weren't enthusiastic about this 'heroic' race, dreamed up to revive a struggling newspaper, through roads more suited to hooves than wheels, with bikes weighing up to 20 kilos, on a single fixed gear, for three full weeks. Assembling enough riders for the race meant paying unemployed amateurs from the suburbs of Paris, including a butcher, a chimney sweep and a circus acrobat. There was no indication that this ramshackle cycling pack would draw crowds to throng France's rutted roads and cheer the first Tour heroes. But they did, and all thanks to a marketing ruse, cycling would never be the same again. Acclaimed cycling writer Peter Cossins takes us through the inaugural Tour de France stage by stage to see where the greatest sporting event of all began. ungekürzt. Language: English. With cities across the country adding miles of bike lanes and building bike-share stations, bicycling is enjoying a new surge of popularity in America. It seems that every generation or two, Americans rediscover the freedom of movement, convenience, and relative affordability of the bicycle. The earliest two-wheeler, the draisine, arrived in Philadelphia in 1819 and astonished onlookers with the possibility of propelling themselves "like lightning". Two centuries later, the bicycle is still the fastest way to cover ground on gridlocked city streets. Filled with lively stories, The Mechanical Horse reveals how the bicycle transformed American life. As bicycling caught on in the 19th century, many of the country's rough, rutted roads were paved for the first time, laying a foundation for the interstate highway system. Cyclists were among the first to see the possibilities of self-directed, long-distance travel, and some of them (including a fellow named Henry Ford) went on to develop the automobile. Women shed their cumbersome Victorian dresses - as well as their restricted gender roles - so they could ride. And doctors recognized that aerobic exercise actually benefits the body, which helped to modernize medicine. Margaret Guroff demonstrates that the bicycle's story is really the story of a more mobile America - one in which physical mobility has opened wider horizons of thought and new opportunities for people in all avenues of life. The book is published by University of Texas Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Margaret Guroff. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/087204/bk_acx0_087204_sample.mp3. The Bram Stoker award-winning author of A Head Full of Ghosts adds an inventive twist to the home invasion horror story in a heart-palpitating novel of psychological suspense that recalls Stephen King’s Misery, Ruth Ware’s In a Dark, Dark Wood, and Jack Ketchum’s cult hit The Girl Next Door. Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road. One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, "None of what’s going to happen is your fault". Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: "Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world." Thus begins an unbearably tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse, and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined. The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Amy Landon. Dragon Shifter Novel Dragon shifters are a dying breed. There are so few females left that if drastic measures are not taken, and soon, it'll be over for the species. The threat of extinction looms. King Blaze finally accepts that there is no other option but to evoke an age-old tradition. The Hunt. The eligible dragon shifter males must hunt a handful of females. It's first catch, first serve. The biggest problem is that the females are human. Despite feedback to the contrary, Coal thinks they are weak and breakable. In his opinion, not capable of surviving the hunt, let alone the mating that will follow. He doesn't believe that a lowly human is capable of birthing him a royal heir, so why has his brother, the king, tasked him with claiming one? He can't believe this is happening to him. Especially when most of the males in their tribe are willing to accept one of these puny females. Not him. He's never rutted with one and doesn't have any desire, whatsoever, to rut with one in the future, let alone mate and impregnate one. Claiming one of these females will not be an easy feat considering there are three other dragon tribes vying for the opportunity. How the hell is he supposed to do all of this when he doesn't want to come within a mile of one of these unsavory creatures? Guaranteed HEA! The story contains strong sexual themes/language and is not intended for listeners under the age of 18. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stella Bloom, Sebastian York. It usually happens by chance. You are alone in a deserted parking lot or at an interstate rest stop, when a man approaches you out of nowhere. An average-looking fellow with a good-natured smile; a man who, in your opinion, certainly couldn't harm a fly. Then, in a flash, it happens. The pepper spray, the duct tape, the forceful imprisonment in the oily darkness of a car trunk. You lay there and listen as the car tires hum on the smoothness of asphalt, then the crackle of gravel, then the rutted instability of a lonesome dirt road. Above the noise you can hear your abductor humming a familiar tune cheerfully to himself - The Doors' "Riders on the Storm." It is at that moment that you realize that his grin was anything but good-natured and that his brain - and dark intentions - are as twisted and slimy as a nest of squirming nightcrawlers. In Unhinged: Tales of Darkness and Depravity, southern horror author, Ronald Kelly, explores the blackest recesses of the human psyche in eleven chilling tales of dark suspense and terror. Serial killers, mass murderers, and other no-account folks stalk these pages, donning the mask of mediocrity and normality, until the masquerade comes abruptly to an end and the abominations lurking beneath are laid bare and unbridled. And, by then, it is too late. There can be no escape, for the one who has possession of your body and soul is hopelessly unhinged. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Milton Bagby. The great American automotive pioneers were entrepreneurial inventors and visionaries who changed the American landscape and brought us a new national culture. The dawn of the automobile ushered away the ubiquitous horse-drawn carriages and the rutted, dusty and wash-boarded dirt roads they traveled on, and replaced them with cars powered by steam, electricity and gasoline. These pioneers lifted the veil of isolation that enveloped most pre-twentieth century Americans and made it possible for the average person to travel whenever and wherever he or she pleased. Automobiles changed the concept of transportation and more so, how and where we lived, worked, and played. Written by award-winning author and syndicated columnist Daniel Alef, who has written more than 300 biographical profiles of America's great tycoons, and narrated by radio personality Baron Ron Herron, A Road Well Traveled offers many lessons to be draw from these pioneers and the fascinating lives they led. Some became fabulously wealthy; others died in obscurity. But they developed America's largest industry in the space of one generation and demonstrated the skills and characteristics necessary to achieve such success. Their audacity, determination, perseverance, work-ethic, and passion were unassailable. These pioneers were undaunted by any and all obstacles in their path.  Their stories are instructive and absorbing. Volume I of A Road Well Traveled tells the fascinating stories of the following automotive pioneers: Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., David D. Buick, William C. Durant, Charles & Frank Duryea, the Fisher brothers, Henry Ford, Charles Goodyear, Charles F. Kettering, Charles W. Nash, Ransom E. Olds, and the Stanley brothers. ungekürzt. Language: English.
