Belief in witchcraft goes far back into prehistoric times. It continues today, not only among primitive peoples, but also in many civilized nations. Witches’ covens, Satanism, black magic - these are among the concepts recognized by numerous people both here and abroad. With the exception of St. Augustine, Church authorities opposed the belief in witchcraft. Their opinions were expressed especially in the so-called Carron episcapi (Council of Ancyra, 9th cent.). However, in the 13th century, witchcraft became a crimen magiue and witch trials started. When early Christians incorporated the Old Testament sporadically in their doctrines, they inherited with it the belief in witches manifested in such passages as, “Thou shalt suffer no witch to live” (Exodus xii, 18) and “Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft” (I Samuel 15:23). The account of the witch of Endor (I Samuel 28:7-25) is familiar to most industrious Sunday School pupils. While some scholars argue that the original Hebrew terms should not be translated as “witch” or “witchcraft”, those were the words officially accepted and thus interpreted by the Church. The procedures and organization of witch trials were based on the Church’s trials for heresy by the Inquisition, a tribunal established by Pope Lucius III in 1184 for the repression of all kinds of breaches of orthodoxy. The dividing line between heresy and witchcraft was not at first very clear. Every heresy was diabolical, and anyone convicted of practicing magic was a heretic. ungekürzt. Language: English. Twenty-three centuries ago the second most powerful man in the world chose life as a vampire over the uncertainty of death. His childhood friend and later his lover was none other than Alexander the Great. Legend at the time had it they were one soul inhabiting two bodies. Conquering the known world by the age of 32, they influence the world to this very day. Hephaestion introduces the listener to the whimsical vampire whose zest for all life has to offer has not waned over the centuries as he waits for Alexander to be reborn. Meet his ghost writer, his friends in modern-day Boston, and learn about his life with Alexander before hew turned into an immortal by the mysterious Quermen: a race of unfathomable age. Never growing old they simply observe. Afflicted with AADD, Hephaestion's narration as told through his writer, Stefan Pride, is at times historically accurate, often funny, sporadically sad, and liberally peppered with some of the most visually inspiring gay erotica to ever disgrace an audiobook. With the latter in mind this work of fiction should not be heard by anyone not of legal age or anyone who finds physical love between men offensive. Hephaestion was originally published under the title Before Eternity, but has been re-edited to correct most glaring mistakes and sentence structures. Some of the story lines have been altered for the better. If you have acquired the original book be assured that the changes in this edition will flow smoothly into subsequent volumes in the Hephaestion series. ungekürzt. Language: English. In 1985, Bret Easton Ellis shocked, stunned, and disturbed with Less Than Zero, his ‘extraordinarily accomplished first novel’ (New Yorker), successfully chronicling the frightening consequences of unmitigated hedonism within the ranks of the ethically bereft youth of '80s Los Angeles. Twenty-five years later, Ellis returns to those same characters – to Clay and the band of infamous teenagers whose lives weave sporadically through his – but now, they face an even greater period of disaffection: their own middle age. Clay seems to have moved on – he’s become a successful screenwriter – but when he returns from New York to Los Angeles, to help cast his new movie, he’s soon drifting through a long-familiar circle. Blair, his vulnerable former girlfriend, is now married to Trent – still a bisexual philanderer – and their Beverly Hills parties attract excessive levels of fame and fortune. Clay’s childhood friend Julian is a recovering addict running an ultra-discreet, high-class escort service, and their old dealer Rip, reconstructed and face-lifted nearly beyond recognition, is involved in activities far more sinister than those of his notorious past. After a meeting with a gorgeous but talentless actress determined to win a role in his movie, Clay finds himself connected with Kelly Montrose, a producer whose gruesomely violent death is suddenly very much the talk of the town. As his seemingly endless proclivity for betrayal leads him to be drawn further and further into this ominous case, it looks like he will face far more serious consequences than ever before. ungekürzt. The significance of the study of the history of Asia requires no exceptional prominence, principally with the rise of China, India, and Japan as main supremacies of this continent. The Asian history could be seen as the combined history of many diverse outlying littoral regions such as South Asia, East Asia, and the Middle East connected by the internal frame of the Eurasian steppe. The littoral border was home to some of the world's most primitive civilizations, with each of the three sections evolving early civilizations about the lush river valleys. These valleys were rich as the earth there was fertile and could produce several root crops. The civilizations in the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, and China had many things in common and probably traded expertise and philosophies like mathematics and the wheel. Other concepts like writing probably developed independently in every region. Cities, states, and then kingdoms established in these wetlands. The steppe expanse had always been occupied by equestrian nomads, and from the central steppes they could reach any area of they wished to in the Asia. The northern part of the continent, which covered most of Siberia, was also unapproachable to the steppe nomads because of tundra and the dense jungles. These Siberian regions were sporadically populated. The core and boundary were separated by deserts and mountain peaks. The Himalaya, Caucasus, Gobi Desert and Karakum Desert molded the blockades which the steppe horsemen could cross with struggle. While technically and ethnically the city inhabitants were more radical, they could not do much regimentally to protect against the mounted crowds of the steppe. Nevertheless, the wetlands did not have sufficient open plains to upkeep a big horse bound force. So the wanderers who occupied states in the Middle East were quickly required to familiarize to the native societies. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tracy Tupman. Sometimes we’re not alone....What is the secret behind the brutal murders that have taken place sporadically over the last century in a small, insignificant South London terraced house?  The Reverend Bernard Paltoquet is determined to find out when two of his favorite parishioners are found with their heads caved in in front of the ornate Victorian fireplace by their five-year-old son, Henry Freeman. This fireplace seems to be the key to the puzzle. Despite years of neglect, the living room hearth is always spotlessly clean, like the day it was installed. Why? This novel centers around the Reverend Paltoquet and his search for the truth. The other chief protagonist is Edith Lomax, an unhappily married doctor’s wife, who resides in 57 Bockhampton Road, where the first murders take place back in 1896. This triple murder of a man and two children sets in train the series of murders that are to follow. The search for the truth, which involves another six murders by the same fireplace in the same room in the same house following on from the first murders, culminates in the present day with an exorcism that doesn’t work. We discover that there are many restless spirits trapped in the house, forced to remain by the violence of their deaths, and unable to communicate with the living world until a medium helps to set them free. Reverend Paltoquet’s close friend, Dorothy Plunkett, is that medium. He calls on her to help these spirits to their final rest, and this is when we learn the truth behind the murders and the real perpetrator of the crimes.  Titles in the Reverend Paltoquet Mystery Series are:  The Bockhampton Road Murders Haunted Christmas The Possession of November Jones The Witches of Wandsworth So Long at the Fair The Man Who Was Death The Dark Side of the Mirror  ungekürzt. *36:00:00* The clock activates so suddenly in my mind, my head involuntarily jerks a bit to the side. The fog vanishes, dissipated in an instant as though it never was. Memories come slotting into place, their edges sharp enough to leave furrows, and suddenly I know. I know exactly who I am. My name is Lia Johansen, and I was named for a prisoner of war. She lived in the Tiersten Internment Colony for two years, and when they negotiated the return of the prisoners, I was given her memories and sent back in her place. And I am a genetically engineered human bomb. Lia Johansen was created for only one purpose: to slip onto the strategically placed New Sol Space Station and explode. But her mission goes to hell when her clock malfunctions, freezing her countdown with just two minutes to go. With no Plan B, no memories of her past, and no identity besides a name stolen from a dead POW, Lia has no idea what to do next. Her life gets even more complicated when she meets Michael Sorenson, the real Lia's childhood best friend. Drawn to Michael and his family against her better judgment, Lia starts learning what it means to live and love and to be human. It is only when her countdown clock begins sporadically losing time that she realizes even duds can still blow up. If she wants any chance at a future, she must find a way to unlock the secrets of her past and stop her clock. But as Lia digs into her origins, she begins to suspect there's far more to her mission and to this war than meets the eye. With the fate of not just a space station but an entire empire hanging in the balance, Lia races to find the truth before her time - literally - runs out. ungekürzt. Language: English.
