For over a century, the town of Gossamer Grove has thrived on its charm and midwestern values, but Annalise Forsythe knows painful secrets, including her own, hover just beneath the pleasant facade. When a man is found dead in his run-down trailer home, Annalise inherits the trailer, along with the pictures, vintage obituaries, and old revival posters covering its walls. As she sorts through the collection, she's wholly unprepared for the ramifications of the dark and deadly secrets she'll uncover. A century earlier, Gossamer Grove has been stirred into chaos by the arrival of controversial and charismatic twin revivalists. The chaos takes a murderous turn when Libby Sheffield, working at her father's newspaper, receives an obituary for a reputable church deacon hours before his death. As she works with the deacon's son to unravel the mystery behind the crime, it becomes undeniably clear that a reckoning has come to town - but it isn't until another obituary arrives that they realize the true depths of the danger they've waded into.  Two women, separated by a hundred years, must uncover the secrets within the borders of their own town before it's too late and they lose their future - or their very souls. ungekürzt. The first-person account of how a small band of Green Berets used horses and laser-guided missiles to overthrow the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan after 9/11. They landed in a dust storm so thick the chopper pilot used dead reckoning and a guess to find the ground. They were met by a band of heavily armed militiamen who didn't understand a word they said. They climbed a mountain on horseback to meet the most ferocious warlord in Asia. They plotted a war of nineteenth-century maneuvers against a twenty-first-century foe. They saved babies and treated fevers, trekked through minefields, and waded through booby-trapped streams-sometimes past the mangled bodies of local tribesmen who'd shared food with them hours before. They found their enemy hiding in thick concrete bunkers, dodged bullets from machine-gun-laden pickup trucks, and survived ambushes launched with Russian tanks. They fought back with everything they had, from smart bombs to AK-47s. They overthrew a government, mediated blood feuds between rival commanders, and argued with generals and politicians thousands of miles away. The men they helped called them gods. One of their commanders called them devils. Hollywood called them the Horse Soldiers. They called themselves Green Berets-Special Forces ODA 595.

It will go down as one of the most amazing archeological discoveries in history. Homo naledi - a new species of human-like fossils found in South Africa - is already rewriting the story of human evolution. These 15 skeletons are the largest cache of pre-human bones ever found. But so far, scientists don't know how old they are, or why they were placed in this burial site. Grad student Alia Gurtov describes the perilous crawl into the cave, which narrows to 7 inches at one point, in order to retrieve the fossils. And paleoanthropologist John Hawks explains why the discovery overturns decades of assumptions about our ancestry. What's it like to look at the 30,000-year old paintings in Chauvet Cave? "You're just awe-struck", says renowned filmmaker Werner Herzog, who finds direct connections between these ancient paintings and modern art. The Chauvet paintings also inspired Kim Stanley Robinson to write his novel Shaman, which is set in the paleolithic era when humans co-existed with Neandertals. Michelle Paver is another novelist who writes about the Stone Age. Her big question: What kinds of stories were told by the greatest storytellers? In our last segment, we shift gears and reflect on 9/11 and the battles that followed with one of the world's great war photographers. James Nachtwey nearly died taking photos at Ground Zero as the World Trade Center collapsed, and he's waded into war zones around the world. [Broadcast Date: September 16, 2015] Language: English. For the first time, the truth behind the best-selling adventure narrative The Long Walk. Since 1956, The Long Walk has been, for many, the symbol of an immense love of freedom and has become one of the greatest true-life adventure stories of all time. The harrowing story about a group of POWs who escaped a labor camp in Siberia and walked to freedom in India during WWII deeply affected thousands of its readers, and Linda Willis was one of those moved by the story. But she had questions about its authenticity: Was it all true? What happened after their arrival in India? Were there others involved in the story? Who was Mr. Smith? Though she was not a trained researcher, Willis felt compelled to look at some of the most powerful aspects of the story and to try to dig to the core of the truth behind The Long Walk. Willis’ investigation took her down unforeseen byways with many hours spent unraveling facts, truths, half-truths, rumors, and the like. She waded through archives, wrote and spoke to hundreds of people, and continued to seek out and verify the details of the greatest adventure narrative ever written. The path of Willis’ research will be a model for anyone attempting a similar search and who has ever thought about the story behind a book. No one who reads Looking for Mr. Smith will ever think of The Long Walk in the same way. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kate Reading. Dorothy Salisbury Davis brings to life the joys, hardships, and challenges of the Irish in New York City, following the lives of five people from their voyage to America in 1848 through 15 turbulent years. When the Valiant weighs anchor, the Irish that are crammed into her hold break into song, and with the hymn, say good-bye to the island of their birth. Famine, nationalism, and sectarian strife have crippled the Emerald Isle, and those who can afford it crowd aboard leaky ships, risking death for the possibility of a better life. Among the Valiant's passengers are Peg and Norah Hickey, a pair of lovely young runaways; powerful and charming Dennis Lavery, who sets his sights on Tammany Hall; tough urchin Vinnie Dunne; and Stephen Farrell, a lawyer and journalist who waded into troubled political waters in Ireland. While they begin their journey with optimism in their hearts, as their fortunes prosper in the new world, their lives will be touched in ways they would never expect - by disillusionment, corruption, and the violence of America's Civil War. A tribute to her mother’s homeland, this historical novel was the first work of fiction published by Dorothy Salisbury Davis that did not deal with crime and criminals. Nonetheless, she brings to it the same insightful characterization, lively pacing, and engrossing drama that mark her as one of the finest mystery authors of all time. ungekürzt. Language: English. Obsessive. Toxic. Ice Princess. Witch. Jewell King ignored the epithets slung at her behind her back. Hell, after six, or was it seven, personal security officers asked to be reassigned rather than continue to guard her 24/7, maybe she deserved the names. She didn't care. Good riddance. Well...the last one had kinda weaseled his way into her daily routine with his compulsive cleaning and insistence on health foods. When he left, she noticed and was...hurt. But that didn't matter. She had no time for emotions. Handling the information and data systems for Guardian required 28 hour days and triple her current staff. On her shoulders rested the weight of defending Guardian against a brilliant hacker determined to take down all billionaire David Xavier had built and destroy her family in the process. He'd tried before. She had frustrated his first attempt by the slimmest of margins. This time he’d made it personal and he just might succeed.Zane Reynolds waded through several weeks’ worth of empty energy drink cans, cast off candy wrappers, and stale pizza boxes, and viewed Jewell's office with a resigned sense of deja vu. He was back - against his will and despite his best efforts to stay as far away from Jewell as he could get. The fact she hated him would make Jewell a difficult assignment. He should walk away like all the others, except he couldn’t. He’d seen through the woman’s veneer and had witnessed the true kindness of the person hiding under the beautiful, yet caustic façade. This time, Zane had non-negotiable conditions before he'd agree to return as Jewell King's personal security, and he told the CEO of Guardian as much. This time, he was doing things his way.  ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Matt Haynes. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/192232/bk_acx0_192232_sample.mp3. For Jillybean, moments of utter happiness and pure sanity are as fleeting and wonderful as sun-showers at a July picnic. Her time with Granny Annie is one such moment, but as always it ends far too quickly and she is once more thrust back into a world of crushing loneliness and endless despair. Setting out to find a family who will lover, she discovers an orphaned boy of her own age named Chris. He brings her a feeling of hope that she desperately needs because she also discovers a purpose, one fraught with danger and one that might end in the most horrifying death imaginable. Having waded through an ocean of blood from New York to Colorado, Jillybean is haunted by the idea of revenge. How many fathers or mothers or loved ones has she struck down in her simple quest just to survive? Thousands upon thousands, in all probability. Perhaps more frightening is the question of how many enemies she had left alive and how many more she had created? And how many hundreds of them are consumed with the desire to take revenge on her? When a terrifying weapon goes missing, the nightmare of revenge becomes a reality and Jillybean must throw herself into a quest to save the Estes Valley from utter destruction. There is just one problem: is the threat even real? Are there people actually roaming the valley at night killing in a terrifying manner? Or are all these enemies figments of her warped imagination? As the death toll mounts, the people of the Valley begin to ask: Is Jillybean the nightmare? Is she the one doing the killing? And if so, who has the wits to match her genius and stand against her? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Basil Sands. Tap into the most powerful resource available to entrepreneurs! (That your competition likely isn't even aware of.) If you're in business, you should publish a book. That simple and rather bold idea is truer today than ever before. Publishing a book allows entrepreneurs like you to leverage your knowledge and experience in a way that enhances your brand and builds credibility with your audience. Not long ago, the idea of publishing a book was a dream restricted to a lucky few - those chosen by the big publishing companies to share their ideas with the world. The investment required to write a book was prohibitive - even if you could convince a publisher to actually consider the work. As a result, few entrepreneurs ever waded into the world of publishing. Since that time, the world has changed entirely. The recent explosion of self-publishing has lowered the barrier to entry and made the process open to nearly everyone. While this has increased competition and generally lowered royalties, the opportunities to build your brand, court clients and establish credibility and prestige in your chosen industry have increased immeasurably - all for a relatively small investment. But how do you navigate the self-publishing process and not waste time, money and energy? Enter Rob Archangel and his team at Archangel Ink. His book, The Published Professional: Use Self-Publishing to Build Your Brand, Attract More Clients and Increase Sales, offers a no-nonsense collection of insights into the world of self-publishing to help you understand the immense potential of self-publishing and how it can benefit your business in ways far beyond the royalties earned. ungekürzt. In 1940, native West Texan Roy H. Elrod joined the Marine Corps. By the time his unit, the 8th Marine Regiment, went into the fight at Guadalcanal, he was commanding a platoon of 37 mm gunners. They endured Japanese attacks, malarial tropical weather, and starvation rations. His combat leadership earned him a Silver Star and a battlefield promotion. On D-Day, his platoon waded their 37 mm cannons ashore, each weighing nearly 1,000 pounds, through half a mile of bullet-laced surf to get to an island where the killing never stopped. His was the only platoon to get its guns ashore and into action that first day. Saipan was not as intense, but just as deadly. Here Elrod commanded a platoon of 75 mm halftracks. Again, he kept his platoon in front-line combat, blasting enemy caves and pillboxes. It was a dangerous place to be - Elrod was riddled with shrapnel from an enemy artillery shell that ended the war for him. The book is based on more than 50 hours of interviews conducted by Marine Corps historian Fred H. Allison, who also drew upon Elrod’s wartime letters home and provided annotations to the narrative. It is a view of the war from the perspective of a young Marine infantry officer, a job that had an extremely low survival potential. The book is published by University of North Texas Press.“Fascinating, true-life story of duty, service, and battles with a horrifically high mortality rate. Highly recommended." (Midwest Book Review)"This exceptional work by Dr. Fred Allison ensures Elrod's sacrifices and experiences as a United States Marine will be remembered." (Leatherneck Magazine)“Remarkable story of one marine's combat experience in three of the most iconic Marine Corps operations in World War II. Highly recommended...." (Military Review) ungekürzt.
