    Wien 1920. Nach Jahren in Kriegsgefangenschaft kehrt der ehemalige Kriminalbeamte Peter Perg (Murathan Muslu) aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg nach Hause zurück. Doch das Wien, das er vorfindet, ist nicht mehr das, was er kannte. Das Kaiserreich ist zusammengebrochen. Die neue österreichische Republik lebt von sozialer und künstlerischer Freiheit, hat aber auch bereits mit dem Aufkommen antidemokratischer Bewegungen und Arbeitslosigkeit zu kämpfen. Im Haus regiert die Concierge (Margarete Tiesel), seine geliebte Frau hat mit dem Kind die Stadt schon lange verlassen und Perg ist ein Fremder in seiner Heimatstadt. Gerade als er sich auf den Weg zu seiner Familie machen will, wird er mit dem grausamen Mord an einem seiner ehemaligen Kameraden konfrontiert - und das bleibt nicht der einzige Fall dieser Art. Perg erkennt, dass er mit allen Opfern persönlich verbunden ist und bleiben muss, um den Mörder zu finden. Die kühlen Gerichtsmedizinerin Dr. Theresa Körner (Liv Lisa Fries) wird zu seiner Verbündeten, nicht zuletzt aufgrund einer gemeinsamen Vergangenheit. Im Laufe ihrer Ermittlungen stellen sie fest, dass sie es nicht nur mit einem brutalen und systematisch vorgehenden Mörder zu tun haben, sondern auch mit Intrigen innerhalb der Polizei. Peter Perg kämpft für Gerechtigkeit, doch als sich das Netz des Mörders um ihn selbst schließt, steht Perg vor dem moralischen Dilemma seines Lebens... 'Hinterland' (2021) macht in jeder Einstellung die innere Zerrissenheit seiner Hauptfigur und die äußere Fragilität der Gesellschaft gleichzeitig sichtbar und dadurch den Film für seine ZuschauerInnen sowohl virtuell und als auch emotional zu einem außergewöhnlichen Ereignis. Der Film von Stefan Ruzowitzky lässt auf eine sehr spezielle Produktionsgeschichte blicken: 'Hinterland' wurde fast ausschließlich mit der Blue-Screen-Technik gedreht. Das Szenenbild, das nicht von ungefähr an die modernen und expressionistischen Motive des Kinos der 20er Jahre erinnert, entstand hauptsächlich am Computer (Digital Design Art Director: Oleg Prodeus, Digital Design VFX Supervisor Ronald Grauer für Benuts). Dafür inszenierte Ruzowitzky den hochkarätigen Cast von Murathan Muslu (aus 'Die Hölle', 'Wilde Maus' und 'Skylines'), über Liv Lisa Fries ('Babylon Berlin'), Marc Limpach ('Bad Banks') und Maximilian von der Groeben ('Fack ju Göhte') bis hin zu Matthias Schweighöfer ('100 Dinge') vor nacktem blauem Hintergrund. Für die Bildgestaltung zeichnete der mehrfach preisgekrönte Kameramann Benedict Neuenfels (siehe auch 'Styx') verantwortlich, für die Entwicklung des visuellen Stils und den Schnitt der Editor Oliver Neumann ('Joy'). Die Komposition wurde von Kyan Bayani ('Bad Banks') umgesetzt, das Drehbuch stammt von Hanno Pinter, Robert Buchschwenter und Stefan Ruzowitzky nach einer Idee von Hanno Pinter. Abandoning American Garage Rock and the Liege nucleus of his Freaksville label, this time he heads for England: throwing his cowboy persona in the Thames and replacing it with a power-pop King's Road swagger. Here the glamourous seedy smog of The Stranglers permeates the keyboards, alongside the rhythm section of The Only Ones, pulsating like an East End pub on match night. Add roguish charm, radioactive layers, licks as sharp as a dart and it's a potent cocktail, shaken not stirred. He's accompanied by The Loved Drones, his Anglo-Belgian backing band as featured in Phantom, as well as the cream of Wallonian pop: producer Marc Moulin on piano, Marc 'Morgan' Wathieu (founder of The Tricheurs) on guitar, Girls in Hawaii bassist and singer of Hallo Kosmo, Daniel Offerman but also guests like Marie France, theremin retro-futurist Man From Uranus and the mysterious Marie Ange...so, a real English dish, served up with a pint of stout on the side. In addition to cover of La Variété (J'écoute une K7 de la vedette) and lyrics by Michel Moers of Telex (J'aurais Ta Peau) and Jacques Duvall (Le roi des paranos, Le pseudonyme), the words look towards a weird and twisted future, a cyber-wallonia of 2035 where a computer finds love, the perfect woman arrives from another galaxy, and a ventriloquist is dumped by his dummy. This is the universe that The Love Drones unfolded in the hands of Ed Peffer of Fortress Studios in Provost Street (stomping ground of such groups as Primal Scream, Death In Vegas, Spiritualized et Magazine)and then mixed by Gilles Martin (Front 242, Polyphonic size, Minimal Compact as well as Venus and Girls In Hawaii). The end result is electrified rock 'n roll played by strange machines that bounds along like a bubble-gum red double-decker bus. Play It Again, Miam!
