Jane Doe No More: My 15-Year Fight to Reclaim My Identity: A True Story of Survival, Hope, and Redemption , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 595min
In 1993, Donna Palomba was raped by a masked assailant in her own home. Yet, her story is more than a victim's tale of physical and emotional recovery. It is a story of one woman's hunt for justice while fending off attacks by institutions designed to defend and protect her - the police department, the local government, and a community clinging to an outrageous claim that Donna had invented the crime to cover up a sexual affair. From the night of the attack, the botched crime scene investigation, and the abuse as authorities attempted to close the case by discrediting her, Donna was left as a victim with no name and no identity. Meanwhile, there was one courageous detective, later to become chief of police, who broke a cops' code of silence in the name of justice. As they fought on, a legal battle ensued after the Waterbury Police Department - now with media support - refused to let go of its allegations against her and admit wrongdoing. Finally, after 11 years of struggle, Donna learned the identity of her attacker from the chief of police, who explained that the DNA from the rape kit taken a decade ago had turned up a shocking match. In 2007, Donna Palomba was the subject of a special two-hour Dateline episode about her case. Suddenly, she was Jane Doe no more, launching the Jane Doe No More organization and becoming a promoter of the rights of women and victims of sexual assault. With the help of crime investigator and author M. William Phelps, this is her story. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Christy Lynn. Our Good Name: A Company's Fight to Defend Its Honor and Get the Truth Told About Abu Ghraib , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1301min
In April 2004, an illegally leaked U.S. Army report thrust CACI, an information technology company, into the international spotlight by casting suspicion on a CACI employee for being "either directly or indirectly responsible" for the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. At the same time, pictures from the abuses were shown on national television and tarnished anyone associated with Abu Ghraib - including CACI. What ensued was a media frenzy rarely seen by any company in recent decades. The media twisted the unsupported allegations into a guilty verdict without regard for the facts or the truth, creating a damning public perception of CACI. Our Good Name recounts how CACI battled to defend itself against erroneous and malicious reports by a rampaging media, how it responded to the wide-ranging government investigations, and how it overcame misplaced anger and criticism that put the company's dedicated employees and excellent reputation - even its future - at risk. Faced with constant accusations, exaggerations, and false reports, CACI refused to allow the media storm and uninformed opportunists to drag it down. The company condemned the behavior depicted in the infamous prison photos. If any employee had been culpable of any wrongdoing, the company would respond forcefully and accordingly, but only adhering to the rule of law. There would be no witch hunts, no lynch mobs, and no kangaroo courts. Spearheaded by its long-time leader, chairman, president, and CEO Dr. J. Phillip London, the company mounted a concentrated campaign to address the allegations and make the facts known. CACI used innovative methods of crisis management and consistent communications to push back against the distortions and mistakes. CACI would also rely upon its long-established, proven culture of ethics and integrity to direct its activities and set the record straight. Our Good Name is CACI's story of facing one of the bigge ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Fleet Cooper. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/011979/bk_adbl_011979_sample.mp3. This book is a wake-up call to the citizens of the greatest nation in the history of mankind to come together and get it together before we wreck it together. This book is a wake-up call to my Black community. We must do better. This book is a wake-up call to all Christians in America. The Righteous Remnant: The House of David , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 386min
Many Americans associate the House of David with its bearded barnstorming baseball teams of the 1920s and 30s. Others may recall the sex scandal associated with the group, a scandal that gave newspapers during the first years after World War I some added spice. Still, others may know it as a religious communal society founded in 1903, which has a few adherents today. What is this strange group and how can these diverse images be reconciled? In the first in-depth study of the House of David, originally published in 1981, Robert S. Fogarty places the sect in the Anglo-Israelite millennial tradition that goes back to 17th-century England, which produced prophets like the mystic Joanna Southcott and from which arose sects in England, Australia, and the United States. Their reading of the Book of Revelation promised the saving of a righteous remnant of humanity who would gather in one place to await the millennium. Evangelist Benjamin Purnell became the seventh prophet in the line of this tradition and, with his bigamous wife, Mary, established a community for its followers in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The House of David was a celibate communal society controlled by the Purnells, and it attracted members who exchanged their worldly goods for the security of salvation. At its height, the community had more than 700 members and prospered by running farms, a canning company, and an amusement park and hosting popular touring bands and the traveling baseball teams. But there were defectors, and from them emerged rumors of oppressive conditions, sexual misconduct on the part of the prophet himself, hastily arranged group marriages, and financial wrongdoing that led to a series of civil suits. The allegations drove Purnell into hiding, and the State of Michigan launched an elaborate trial against the colony. The book is published by The Kent State University Press. ungekürzt. A beautiful blonde socialite, with a penchant for seduction and secrets to keep, witnesses a murder and turns to LA private eye Ben Malone for help. Known for playing it fast and loose with the rules, the eccentric Shamus has a decided weakness for attractive women. A vicious LA mob figure gets tossed into the mix, and the body count rises. What else could go wrong? Three more murders occur that are connected to the one witnessed by his client before Malone's investigation gets untracked. From there, like an out of control roller coaster, things go downhill fast and from bad to worse. First Malone learns that the string of murders is mob-connected. The man believed behind them is a heavy hitter, the violent and ruthless head of the Ukrainian mafia in Los Angeles. He is a man who, Malone soon learns, will stop at nothing to get his hands on Malone's client. Malone's own love interest, feisty psychiatrist Sara Bernstein, gets caught in the mobster's crosshairs and is abducted and held hostage by the mobster as leverage to force Malone to betray the whereabouts of his client. Along the way Malone also discovers that things may not be as they first appeared with his drop-dead gorgeous client. She may be a femme fatale up to her pretty little ears in some criminal malfeasance of her own. Malone races against time, first to rescue the woman he loves and then to sort the innocent from the guilty in time to escape in one piece from what rapidly evolves into a complicated web of deceit and criminal wrongdoing, where it seems that fair is foul, and foul is fair. ungekürzt. Animosity , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 403min
Andrew Holland is a best-selling horror writer. While none of Andy's neighbors has any interest in reading his macabre books, they're pleased to have a celebrity author living among them. Then, one morning, Andy finds the body of a child several hundred feet from his front door. A little girl who has been raped and murdered. And everything changes on Poinsettia Lane. Andy's neighbors turn on him. Their animosity is subtle at first: a dirty look from across the street, a friendly wave that is not reciprocated. The local media exacerbates the tension in the neighborhood by insinuating connections between the horror writer's work and his role in the girl's murder. The authorities clear Andy of any wrongdoing, but the stain has set. Before long, this once-quiet, peaceful neighborhood becomes a maelstrom of anxiety and chaos. Andy's neighbors surround his home like a horde of zombies - but instead of a hunger for flesh, these monsters are driven by lies, fear, and hatred. Andy Holland's neighborhood is just like our neighborhoods and his neighbors are our neighbors. They are the people who we interact with on a daily basis and we can easily see them reflected in Newman's characters. That is what makes this book so incredibly frightening. We can easily see what animosity can do to a person. It can bring out the hatred and ugliness in the people we know. Newman's vision of a picturesque community plays out like the classic Twilight Zone episode, 'The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street' as the true villains are those who claim to be "fighting the good fight". Logic gets tossed to the wayside as mob mentality takes over and people begin looking for any reason to point the finger. The interesting thing is that in a world that claims to embrace diversity, the person with the slightest idiosyncrasy is the most commonly persecuted. ungekürzt. Language: English. Tecate Peak traces the ebb and flow, the frenzy and the calm that is the day to day life of Harry Dugan, a cop from a family of cops who proves to be the epitome of the old adage “no good deed goes unpunished”, who finds himself, a middle aged man, jettisoned from a promising career in law enforcement and a 10-year happy marriage, with the requisite rose covered cottage in the New England countryside. Haunted by the appearance of wrongdoing on the job, and a one-night affair that didn't happen, banished by his wife, who says she still loves him, and betrayed by the man who was like a brother to him, his partner, his friend, Harry stumbles blindly into a world that's new to him. There is an array of fascinating characters sprinkled throughout this audiobook. Among those are “Phil the Mill” Bradshaw, the boss and dispatcher of SCABS (Southern California Border Security,) and their co-agents, who earned the nickname by being a constant source of paperwork, a “paper mill”, and Harry's new partner, Jake McGinnis, who has the potential to form another brotherhood bond, or because of an incident he observes with an undocumented immigrant guide, to destroy what's left of Harry's honor and potential in life. ungekürzt.
