Bold Robin Hood and His Outlaw Band: Their Famous Exploits in Sherwood Forest , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 440min
The legend of Robin Hood was based on the career of a real outlaw who lived in the forests near Nottingham, England, in the last half of the 12th century. His character has become world famous and is the subject of hundreds of plays, novels, stories, and films. As a man of the people who was a partisan for the lower classes, he also became strongly associated with an anticlerical yet pious Christian attitude, an animosity toward the sheriff of Nottingham, and a special regard toward women, children, and the infirm. The chief aspect of his fame was his penchant for robbing the undeserving rich and redistributing their money among the poor. His adversaries are forever being fooled by Robin's disguises, and they are driven to fury by his mocking wit and clever ruses for avoiding capture. Listen along as merry Robin Hood, Little John, Friar Tuck, and their outlaw band keep you entertained for many an exciting hour. Roman History, Volume 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1791min
Dio Cassius was a Roman statesman and historian of Greek origin. He published 80 volumes of history on ancient Rome, beginning with the arrival of Aeneas in Italy. The volumes documented the subsequent founding of Rome (753 BC), the formation of the republic (509 BC), and the creation of the empire (31 BC). The history continues until AD 229. Written in ancient Greek over a period of 22 years, Dio's work covers approximately 1,000 years of history. Many of his 80 books have survived intact or as fragments, providing modern scholars with a unique perspective on Roman history, particularly the period of the empire from Trajan through Alexander Severus. The first 36 books are fragmentary to one extent or another, especially books 30 through 35. Beginning with book 36, Dio enters into a very detailed history that commences with the rivalry of Sulla and Marius. It then follows the career of Julius Caesar. This volume ends with book 49 and the increasing friction between Mark Antony and Octavian. Please note that book three is no longer extant. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. The Epigrams , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 132min
Upon the death of the Latin poet Martial in about A.D. 104, a contemporary wrote, "He had as much good nature in his writing as he did of wit and pungency." He also had a genius for the epigrammatic poem, which has been characterized as a brief, interesting, usually memorable and sometimes surprising or satirical statement. In the hands of Martial, the epigram was raised to a pitch of perfection that has never been equaled to this day. The enduring literary interest of Martial's epigrams arises as much from their literary quality as from the colorful references to human life that they contain. And readers (and listeners) today often see them as sharing an eye for the urban vices of our own times. Martial wrote over 1,500 of these gems, and this recording contains around 10 percent of the total. They are a very good cross-section of his work. Due to the adult nature of some of these poems, those that may be perceived as objectionable have been collected and are in a section of their own at the end of this production. ungekürzt. Barry Lyndon , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 814min
Barry Lyndon, first serialized in 1844, is a swashbuckling romp through the aristocratic Europe of the 18th century. The central character, a roguish Irishman, narrates most of the story in the first person, relating his adventures as a soldier in both the British and Prussian armies; as a gambler and confidence man under the guidance of his uncle, a practiced fraud; and as a fortune hunting gigolo in search of wealthy widows and heiresses. Although Barry is a most unsavory character, he is not without his charms. Barry Lyndon represented a new kind of fiction: the novel without a hero. (Thackeray would later expand these ideas in his most popular novel, Vanity Fair.) The story contains Thackeray's best plot development and contains some of the best prose he ever wrote. Many listeners will hear an echo of Henry Fielding in this magnificent story, though Thackeray's belief that chance was the most overriding factor in most men's fortunes was definitely at odds with the philosophy of his predecessor. Barry Lyndon is a stirring narrative delivered in a rip-roaring whirlwind of a novel. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. The Short Stories of Anton Chekhov, Volume 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 237min
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, (1860-1904), was born in Russia at Taganrog on the Sea of Azov. His name has become synonymous with a certain literary style much admired and widely copied since his death. Typically, a Chekhov story is a "mood", a state of mind, usually with regard to relations between one person and another. Under the influence of the constant, infinitesimal, and unforeseen pinpricks of life, there occurs a gradual transformation of that state of mind. His writing is at once fluid and precise. Most of his stories end on a minor note, instead of the dramatic flourish. Today, Chekhov is regarded as Russia's greatest writer, and his narrative works continue to attract an ever wider circle of readers worldwide. This volume includes the following unabridged works with music and sound effects: The Kiss The Two Volodyas The Lady with the Dog Fear The Darling Chameleon Oysters Finally, "An Essay On The Life of Chekhov", by Dimitri Mirsky, takes us on a tour of Chekhov's life and career. This critically acclaimed work of scholarship is clearly and concisely written to bring into perspective the life of one of Russia's greatest literary figures. ungekürzt. Language: English. Silas Marner , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 488min
The weaver Silas Marner is a member of a small Calvinist congregation in Lantern Yard, a slum street in an unnamed city in Northern England in the early 19th century. He is falsely accused of stealing the congregation's funds, leaves the city in disgrace, and accumulates a small fortune in another town… only to lose it to theft. But he soon adopts an orphan child quite by accident. The exchange of one treasure for another is the heart of the story. In Silas Marner, George Eliot combines humor, jealousy, and rich symbolism within an historically precise setting to create an extraordinary tale of love and hope. This novel explores the issues of redemptive love, the notion of community, the role of religion, and the status of the gentry and family. Eliot concerns herself, as always, with matters of ethics, and it is clear that for her, ethics exist apart from religion. Although it seems like a simple moral story with a happy ending, George Eliot's text is rich with ideas about organized religion, the role of the gentry, and the negative impact of the industrial revolution. ungekürzt. The True Story of Andersonville Prison: A Defense of Major Henry Wirz , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 351min
Second Lieutenant James Madison Page was a Union officer of Company A, Sixth Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. After participating in many skirmishes and battles, including Gettysburg, Page was captured in Virginia on September 21, 1863 by Confederate forces along the Rapidan. After spending several months in various prison camps, he arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia on February 27, 1864. He would remain there seven months during a time when the prison population grew from 10,000 to over 30,000. Page was present at Andersonville during the most crowded and harrowing period, including the summer of 1864. He became acquainted with many fellow prisoners, guards, and the prison commandant, Henry Wurz. Unlike some Union prisoners, Page was not bitter or hostile toward his captors. He observed that the Southerners ate no better than the prisoners and he never saw or heard about any atrocities, an account which was greatly at variance with the government's charges against Wurz in the fall of 1865. Listen as Lieut. James Madison Page recounts his exciting war record, his grim experience as a prisoner of war, and his unflinching testimony of what he saw at Andersonville Prison. ungekürzt. The Metamorphoses , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 971min
An undeniable masterpiece of Western Civilization, The Metamorphoses is a continuous narrative that covers all the Olympian legends, seamlessly moving from one story to another in a splendid panorama of savage beauty, charm, and wit. It marked the first attempt to link all of the Homeric and pre-Homeric myths into a single work and to carry the entire chronology into the Roman pantheon. All of the gods and heroes familiar to us are represented. Such familiar legends as Hercules, Perseus and Medusa, Daedelus and Icarus, Diana and Actaeon, and many others, are breathtakingly recreated. Ovid was probably the most popular of all the Roman poets during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and his verse was the inspiration for countless artistic and literary masterpieces of the time. Shakespeare, Bernini, and Rubens were only a few of those who mined his work to extraordinary effect. Ovid has left mankind a magnificent achievement, and his sparkling poetry is a tour de force of Homeric and Roman myth. As Ovid himself wrote: "As long as Rome is the eternal city, these lines shall echo from the lips of men." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. The Thirty Years War , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1185min
Initially, the Thirty Years War was precipitated in 1618 by religious conflicts between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire. But the conflict soon spread beyond religion to encompass the internal politics and balance of power within the Empire, and then later to the other European powers. By the end, it became simply a dynastic struggle between Bourbon France and Habsburg Spain. And almost all of it was fought out in Germany. After 30 years of conflict, entire regions of Germany and Bohemia were depopulated and destroyed by marching armies, fire, famine, and disease. It bankrupted most of the participants while leaving thousands of German villages, towns, and even cities in smoldering ruin. Because of the political and geographical complexity of the early 17th century, an understanding of The Thirty Years War can be difficult to grasp in the beginning. Listeners will be rewarded by patience. As an aid to comprehension, we recommend the online Wikipedia article "The Thirty Years War" for maps and overviews of the geography, principle leaders, and major battles.
