On Folly Beach , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 848min
Folly Beach, South Carolina, has survived despite hurricanes and war. But it's the personal battles of Folly Beach's residents that have left the most scars, and they are why a young widow has been beckoned there to heal her own. To most people, Folly Beach is simply the last barrier island before reaching the great Atlantic. To some, it's a sanctuary for lost souls, which is why Emmy Hamilton's mother encourages her to buy a local bookstore, Folly's Finds, hoping it will distract Emmy from the loss of her husband. Emmy is at first resistant. So much has already changed. But after finding love letters and an image of a beautiful bottle tree in a box of used books from Folly's Finds, she decides to take the plunge. But the seller insists on one condition: Emmy must allow Lulu, the late owner's difficult sister, to continue selling her bottle trees from the store's backyard. For the most part, Emmy ignores Lulu, and sifts through the love letters. But the more she discovers about the letters, the more she understands Lulu. As details of a possible murder and a mysterious disappearance during World War II are revealed, the two women discover circumstances beyond their control, 60 years apart, have brought them together...on Folly Beach. And it is here that their war-ravaged hearts can find hope for a second chance. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lyssa Browne. Simply Brilliant: How Great Organizations Do Ordinary Things in Extraordinary Ways , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 407min
There's no such thing as an average or old-fashioned business, just average or old-fashioned ways to do business. In fact the opportunity to reach for extraordinary may be most pronounced in settings that have been far too ordinary for far too long. Far away from Silicon Valley, in familiar, traditional, even unglamorous fields, ordinary people are unleashing extraordinary advances that amaze customers, energize employees, and create huge economic value. Their secret? They understand that the work of inventing the future doesn't belong just to geeks designing mobile apps and virtual-reality headsets or to social-media entrepreneurs hoping to launch the next Facebook. Some of today's most compelling organizations are doing brilliant things in simple settings such as retail banks, office cleaning companies, department stores, small hospitals, and auto dealerships. William C. Taylor, cofounder of Fast Company and best-selling author of Practically Radical, traveled thousands of miles to visit these hotbeds of simple brilliance and unearth the principles and practices behind their success. He offers fascinating case studies and powerful lessons that you can apply to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways regardless of your industry or profession. Consider, for instance, how: Miami Beach's dazzling 1111 Lincoln Road reimagined the humble parking garage as a high-profile public space that hosts weddings, yoga classes, and celebrity gatherings. USAA, the financial-services giant that provides soldiers and their families with insurance and banking products, inspires frontline employees to deliver legendary service by immersing them in military culture. Pal's Sudden Service, a fast-food chain with a cult following, serves up burgers and fries with such speed and accuracy that companies from other industries pay to learn from its astonishing discipline. Yip/Tuck , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 315min
One of Laguna Beach's best-known plastic surgeons may need a new leash on life. Unless he's just taking a very long nap on the bench outside Melinda Langston's Bow Wow Boutique... Dr. O'Doggle continued to give us the silent treatment. Fluffy eyed him intently. I studied him too. Tova Randall wasn't my BFF, to say the least, but I didn't wish her boyfriend any bad luck. My neighbor, Darby, relaxed her grip on Fluffy's leash. The big Afghan lunged toward Dr. O and knocked him over. Tova's handsome hunk rolled off the bench and dropped with a thud at our feet. Darby gasped. My stomach knotted. "No, no, no." I shook my head. "Not again." I knelt down and shook his shoulders. "Dr. O'Doggle?" I grabbed his suit lapels and yelled, "Jack?" No response. No, "I'm fine." No, "Stop yelling in my face." No, "Get your hands off me." No, no, no. I checked his throat for a pulse. Nothing. But he was still warm. My fingers brushed against something knotted around his throat, and I'm not talking about his tie. I pulled back his shirt for a better look. I sucked in a breath, my nose filled with a light female perfume I didn't recognize. A thin dog leash was wound tightly around his neck. Identical to the kind I sold at the shop. This was not an accident. "Is he . . .?" Darby asked softly. I looked up at her. "Dead. No more late night walks for him." Sparkle Abbey is the pseudonym of two mystery authors (Mary Lee Woods and Anita Carter). They are friends and neighbors as well as co-writers of the Pampered Pets Mystery Series. The Pen name was created by combining the names of their rescue pets - Sparkle (Mary Lee's cat) and Abbey (Anita's dog). They reside in central Iowa, but if they could write anywhere, you would find them on the beach with their laptops and depending on the time of day, with either an iced tea or a margarita. ungekürzt. As heard on WNYC NPR 93.9 FM on Jan. 15, 2009. Julia Amisano is a singer and singing teacher. Ms. Amisano has performed numerous roles in Opera and Musical Theatre but Classical Art Song is one of her favorite genres. This CD is a compilation of Ms. Amisano's favorite French, German, Norwegian, Italian and English art song from Rossini through the height of the Romantic period. The Norwegian pieces are highly unknown to audiences in the US and were obtained through national archives in Oslow. It is Ms. Amisano's sincere wish to revive Agathe Backer Grondahl's vocal music in the US. Some of her piano pieces can be found, although they too are obscure, but no vocal pieces. Agathe Backer Grondahl was a contemporary and dear friend of Edvard Grieg and a master concert pianist and composer. She was a piano teacher and a Mother as well. Agathe's story is similar to that of Mrs. H.H.A Beach's (the composer of the English pieces on this CD) in that, because of familial duties, she was required to limit her career as a concert pianist short. Both composers' works on this CD are expert examples of their extraordinary talents as composers and the compositions themselves give us an idea of their virtuosity as pianists. Interestingly, they lived around the same time and though Agathe is twenty years older than Mrs. H.H.A Beach (also published as Amy Beach) and may or may not have had any knowledge of her, the way each creates rich, colorful chords that somehow convey the mood of the text simply and perfectly is a stylistic trait they share. The difference between these great talents is that Mrs. Grondahl chose to stay in Norway and enjoy her fame at home instead of touring Europe to create a worldwide name for herself, while Mrs. H.H.A. Beach was requested by her husband, to stay in America, turn her hand to composition and limit her public piano performances to two per year after she married. Mrs. Grondahl seemed to be content with limited fame but Mrs. H.H.A Beach was not pleased at all to be kept in America. After her husband died in 1910 she promptly started touring Europe as a pianist and composer playing her original compositions. She created fame for herself worldwide and published many of her compositions. She spent time at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire and in New York when in the states. She was the first president of the Society of American Women Composers and was instrumental in helping young musicians with their careers. As a woman in the field of Classical music Ms. Amisano feels strongly about reviving passion for both Mrs.Grondahl's and Mrs. Beach's music vocal music. Though Ms. Amisano's first passion is for the songs themselves, it seems appropriate to highlight them in a setting amongst the worlds' most famous song composers. They keep the great Debussy, Brahms, Strauss, Schubert and Rossini good company as Mrs.Grondahl's and Mrs. Beach's talents are as extraordinary. The CD is entitled Green because the lush, romantic music makes Ms. Amisano think of the color green in every shade in every garden she has ever seen. Also, as green is the color of new life, Ms. Amisano hopes this CD will represent a new life for these great composers in the hearing of their wonderful works. Ms. Amisano maintains a private music studio (Grace Studio) in Brooklyn, NY where she lives, and she is committed to performing and distributing beauty through music. Ms. Amisano is constantly involved in singing and teaching projects that foster the promotion of new music as well as old. Her latest project (July '08) was a recording of some pieces from a new Opera being composed by Charles Younger. It is an Armenian Opera based on the text from The Song of Solomon in the Bible. Ms. Amisano has no religious preferences when it comes to music, she has only one rule: if it is beautiful she will sing it.- Shop: odax
