Fans of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Peter Lerangis' Seven Wonders series will embrace this first epic adventure in a rollicking new series by a New York Times best-selling author. Will Wilder is a mischievous, headstrong 12-year-old with an otherworldly gift - he alone can see the nefarious creatures encroaching on Perilous Falls. For nearly a century, a sacred relic has protected his hometown from the raging waters surrounding it. But when Will "borrows" the relic for his own purposes, he accidentally unleashes an ancient evil. As boats sink and hideous creatures crawl from the rising waters, Will must set things right before it is too late. With the help of his sweet (if lethal) great-aunt Lucille, the curator of a museum of powerful artifacts, Will proves that the actions of one 12-year-old boy can change the world. ungekürzt. William James Wintle (1861-1920) was already a recognised writer before he became an Oblate for the Abbey of Caldey Island in Wales. It was there that he wrote a series of horror stories for the entertainment of eight boys who attended the abbey. In the foreword of this collection, Wintle explains that the stories were originally told on Sunday nights while "crouching over a wood fire on a wind-swept island off the Western shore." 'The Chamber of Doom' is the story of a young Earl who inherits the family castle and decides to ignore the old legend that a secret chamber hidden behind a wall in the gallery brings doom upon the Earl who opens it. He sets about opening the wall... and inadvertently releases something evil. This story borrows heavily from ancient legends attached to Glamis Castle in Scotland. ungekürzt. Language: English. If you have ever enjoyed The Gruffalo, you might be amused by this fan homage to that wonderful work. If you haven't, do that first. The Gruffalo is for children zero to five years old. Buffalo Tiger is for six year olds and up. Both works are quite short and ultimately based on a Chinese folk tale about a fox and a tiger. Buffalo Tiger offers a solution to a special challenge of rhyming with "tiger" and adds a few nuances along the way. It invokes the world of insects, whereas The Gruffalo narrates from the world of larger animals. In both tales there is a happy ending. Here is how Buffalo Tiger starts: "An ant took a ramble by an empty nest, an antlion saw the ant and the ant looked best!" This work borrows the amazing structure and some wording from the original. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Josiah John Bildner. What a fun and delightfully silly poem! "The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits" is a nonsense poem (although many insist it is an allegory) written by Lewis Carroll. If you think Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was wacky, try this one. Published in 1876, the poem borrows the setting, some creatures, and eight portmanteau words from Carroll's earlier poem, "Jabberwocky", in his children's novel Through the Looking Glass (1871). The plot follows a crew of 10 trying to hunt the Snark, an animal that may turn out to be a highly dangerous Boojum. The only one of the crew to find the Snark quickly vanishes, leading the narrator to explain that it was a Boojum after all. The Bellman, whose only navigational skills consist of ringing his bell, is my favorite next to the nervous beaver who knits lace most of the time. ungekürzt. Language: English.
