Improving Sustainable Viticulture and Winemaking Practices
Improving Sustainable Practices in Viticulture and Enology provides an up-to-date view on the major issues concerning the sustainability of the wine supply chain. The book describes problems and solutions on the use of inputs (e.g., water, energy) and emphasizes the roles and limitations of implementing circularity in the sector. It identifies some of the most relevant metrics while pinpointing the most critical issues concerning the environmental impacts of wine's supply chain (vineyards, wineries, trading). This is a novel reference to help the industry excel in production while improving current environmental practices. Professionals in industry, academics, environmentalists and anyone interested in gaining knowledge in sustainable solutions and practices in viticulture and wine production will find this resource indispensable.- Shop: buecher

Biomass Supply Chains
Biomass Supply Chains: Sustainable Design for a Circular Economy provides a comprehensive study on key issues in sustainability and the sustainable design of biomass-based fuel, energy systems and supply chains, as well as circular systems for biomass-based production. Economic, environmental, social and technical issues are examined individually at both system/technology and supply chain level, including details on standards and certification schemes. In addition, the book explores the methods and tools for sustainability assessment and sustainable design and management, describing each sustainability-related decision level encountered in design, management and operation phases and discussing the circular economy concept and different analytical tools. By integrating all these problematics and challenges in sustainability and circular design, this book allows researchers in academia and industry working on developing biomass-based solutions to clearly identify the methodologies and tools that satisfy their specific sustainability and circularity requirements based on the recent advances and prospects in the field. Graduate students and practitioners can also use this reference as systematic guide to available sustainability assessment methodologies that they can apply to biomass and bioenergy technologies.- Shop: buecher

Alone on the Moon (eBook, ePUB)
May, 1970. A two-person Soviet crew approaches the moon, ready to accomplish the greatest feat in human historyprovided they can overcome their own petty jealousies, and the unforgiving harshness of space. Alone on the Moon chronicles a Soviet moon mission through the eyes of Boris Volynov, a backup who's been pressed into service helping Alexei Leonov (a man he despises) attempt humanity's first lunar landing. Thoroughly researched, it's a detailed and plausible rendition of two larger-than-life personalities facing incredible challenges. It's also a meditation on luck, trust, the nature of observation, and the burden of being chosenplus the way our personal narratives can shape (or poison) our perceptions of the present. Do the stories we tell ourselves shape our fate, or can we write a new chapter? The answer awaits. The titles in the Altered Space series are wholly separate narratives, but all deal with the mysteries of space and time, progress and circularity. Each one is an enso of words in which orbits of spacecraft, moons, planets, and people allow us fresh perspectives on the cycles of our own lives.- Shop: buecher

Chains of Being (eBook, PDF)
In Chains of Being, Ross P. Cameron argues for both Metaphysical Infinitism, the view that there can be infinitely descending chains of ontological dependence or grounding, with no bottom level of fundamental things or facts, and Metaphysical Holism, the view that there can be circles of ontological dependence or grounding. Cameron argues against the widespread orthodoxy of Metaphysical Foundationalism: that everything in reality is ultimately accounted for by a base class of fundamental phenomena. In doing so, he makes the case against another widespread orthodoxy: that relations like grounding and ontological dependence are explanatory relations. Cameron provides an alternative account of metaphysical explanation that does not tie explanation to determination relations like grounding and ontological dependence, and he shows how explanation works in infinitist and holistic metaphysics. Embracing the possibility of infinite regress and circularity can be theoretically fruitful, as is shown by applying it to a number of cases across a wide range of philosophical areas, including: non-well-founded set theory, mathematical structuralism, the metaphysics of persons, the metaphysics of gender and sexuality, the semantic paradoxes, and others. In the course of exploring these applications, Cameron defends distinctive views concerning when an infinite regress is vicious, the nature of truth, non-classical logic and dialetheism, social construction, and more.- Shop: buecher

Elements of Sonata Theory (eBook, PDF)
Elements of Sonata Theory is a comprehensive, richly detailed rethinking of the basic principles of sonata form in the decades around 1800. This foundational study draws upon the joint strengths of current music history and music theory to outline a new, up-to-date paradigm for understanding the compositional choices found in the instrumental works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and their contemporaries: sonatas, chamber music, symphonies, overtures, and concertos. In so doing, it also lays out the indispensable groundwork for anyone wishing to confront the later adaptations and deformations of these basic structures in the nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries. Combining insightful music analysis, contemporary genre theory, and provocative hermeneutic turns, the book brims over with original ideas, bold and fresh ways of awakening the potential meanings within a familiar musical repertory. Sonata Theory grasps individual compositions-and each of the individual moments within them-as creative dialogues with an implicit conceptual background of flexible, ever-changing historical norms and patterns. These norms may be recreated as constellations "compositional defaults," any of which, however, may be stretched, strained, or overridden altogether for individualized structural or expressive purposes. This book maps out the terrain of that conceptual background, against which what actually happens-or does not happen-in any given piece may be assessed and measured. The Elements guides the reader through the standard (and less-than-standard) formatting possibilities within each compositional space in sonata form, while also emphasizing the fundamental role played by processes of large-scale circularity, or "rotation," in the crucially important ordering of musical modules over an entire movement. The book also illuminates new ways of understanding codas and introductions, of confronting the generating processes of minor-mode sonatas, and of grasping the arcs of multimovement cycles as wholes. Its final chapters provide individual studies of alternative sonata types, including "binary" sonata structures, sonata-rondos, and the "first-movement form" of Mozart's concertos.- Shop: buecher
