  Masterfully fulfilled by Peter Fedynsky, Voice of America journalist and expert on Ukrainian studies, this first ever English translation of the complete Kobzar brings out Ukraine's rich cultural heritage. As a foundational text, The Kobzar has played an important role in galvanizing the Ukrainian identity and in the development of Ukraine's written language and Ukrainian literature. The first editions had been censored by the Russian czar, but the book still made an enduring impact on Ukrainian culture. There is no reliable count of how many editions of the book have been published, but an official estimate made in 1976 put the figure in Ukraine at 110 during the Soviet period alone. That figure does not include Kobzars released before and after both in Ukraine and abroad. A multitude of translations of Shevchenko's verse into Slavic, Germanic and Romance languages, as well as Chinese, Japanese, Bengali, and many others attest to his impact on world culture as well. The poet is honored with more than 1250 monuments in Ukraine, and at least 125 worldwide, including such capitals as Washington, Ottawa, Buenos Aires, Warsaw, Moscow and Tashkent. ________________________ Taras Shevchenko deserves an entire school of translators, especially today.   In This Place

  Well, here we go again. And before I say anything else, I'd like to first say thanks to those of you who supported my debut CD 'Blind Jake's Jump'. And to those of you who are here for the first time, I'd also like to say thanks to you as well. I hope this is not your last visit. With regard to 'In This Place', know that the mood and 'sense' of this work differs noticeably from that of 'Jake'. Musically, it's scope may be a little leaner than before, but it's effect in turn, I think, is more visceral and substantive instead. Also, for very specific reasons, I felt compelled to incorporate something other than 'just' music in this work. So I wrote you sort of a note. Ordinarily, I would normally be adverse to doing such a thing, but I thought this work was different and as such required something 'above and beyond' the music. Admittedly, this was a risky proposition, considering that (usually) external contrivances such as explanations or other such pointed exhortations generally serve to only detract from the author's intended effect for the work. But (again), I thought about you. And because I did, I left a thought or two in the liner notes of this CD 'just for you'. So, if you really want to know what it says, you'll have to get the CD. When you do, I hope you'll find that your investment will (in the end ) have been worth it.
