Jedes NV SRAM verfügt über eine in sich geschlossene Lithium-Energiequelle und eine Steuerschaltung, die VCC ständig auf eine außerhalb der Toleranz liegende Beeinträchtigung überwacht. Im Bedarfsfall wird die Lithium-Energiequelle automatisch eingeschaltet und der Schreibschutz unbedingt aktiviert, um Datenverluste zu vermeiden. Die NV-SRAMs können anstelle von bestehenden 2k x 8 SRAMs verwendet werden, die direkt dem beliebten byteweiten 24-Pin-DIP-Standard entsprechen. Die Pinnings entsprechen auch der Belegung des 2716 EPROM und des 2816 EEPROMs, was eine direkte Substitution bei gleichzeitiger Leistungssteigerung ermöglicht.
