The product of painstaking research and countless interviews, A High Price offers a nuanced, definitive historical account of Israel's bold but often failed efforts to fight terrorist groups. Beginning with the violent border disputes that emerged after Israel's founding in 1948, Daniel Byman charts the rise of Yasser Arafat's Fatah and leftist groups such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine--organizations that ushered in the era of international terrorism epitomized by the 1972 hostage-taking at the Munich Olympics. Byman reveals how Israel fought these groups and others, such as Hamas, in the decades that follow, with particular attention to the grinding and painful struggle during the second intifada. Israel's debacles in Lebanon against groups like the Lebanese Hizballah are examined in-depth, as is the country's problematic response to Jewish terrorist groups that have struck at Arabs and Israelis seeking peace. In surveying Israel's response to terror, the author points to the coups of shadowy Israeli intelligence services, the much-emulated use of defensive measures such as sky marshals on airplanes, and the role of controversial techniques such as targeted killings and the security barrier that separates Israel from Palestinian areas. Equally instructive are the shortcomings that have undermined Israel's counterterrorism goals, including a disregard for long-term planning and a failure to recognize the long-term political repercussions of counterterrorism tactics. ungekürzt. Until now, scholarship on the Covenants has mainly focussed on their role in the conflicts of the 1640s, with discussion of the Covenants after 1660 mostly limited to the context of violent Scottish radicalism. This book moves beyond a rigid focus on Scotland to explore the legacy of the Covenants in England. It examines the discourse surrounding key events in the Restoration period and traces the influence of the Covenants in the context of radical Presbyterianism, and in mainstream debates around politics, church government, and the constitution of the British kingdoms. The Covenants continued to have relevance in two primary respects. Firstly, the Covenants were used as reference points for discussing the competing legacies of the English and Scottish Reformations and the confused issues of church and state that defined the Restoration period. Furthermore, the form of the Covenants as solemn individual subscriptions to a constitutional and religious model, and the political ideas that underpinned them, were emulated by those seeking to resist royal authority during the Exclusion Crisis of 1679-81, and during the events surrounding the Revolution of 1688. Thus, this book holds particular interest for students of constitutionalism, legal pluralism or civil religion in seventeenth-century Britain, and for those seeking to deepen their understanding of the intellectual origins of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and the Revolution of 1688-9.

At the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, young Jonathan Livingston Seagull caught the world’s notice as he sought to break beyond the pitiful life of those average mortals populating the earth. Conquering all, entering into the eternal bliss, Jonathan left us, as did this magical spiritual age of enlightenment. What happened? In that era many seagulls emulated Jonathan, their stories never told. But one mighty bird, Johann Earlington, a contemporary of Jonathan, too looked to greater heights, too wanted answers, and too found the ultimate abode; but today, 40 years after, his efforts lie in ruins. The world, his magnificent new world, has come full circle back to the pain of boredom and hopelessness of repetition. As our story begins, Johann is doubting his own accomplishments, rising to great heights, finding the most glorious of all heavens, lovingly showing this new way to any gull who would listen. But the new age is dead, and there seems no resolution. The end of the old brings the beginning of the new when there emerges a teacher, the Lord himself, in all majesty of Jesus, Buddha, and the still small voice. He shows Johann his errors and gives him new direction. Join Johann as he once and for all learns the true way to enlightenment. The simplicity of it may surprise you. This author gives honor to Jonathan Livingston Seagull author Richard Bach, who first aroused an impatient age, upon which this book is born. ungekürzt. Explore the spirituality of two pillars of Christian living. Both St. Francis and Pope Francis have captured the attention of the world, the former for centuries and the latter since his election as bishop of Rome. Now, in this 18-lecture course, you will explore the rich spiritual tradition of Francis of Assisi and the work of Pope Francis. You will give special attention to four themes: prayer, evangelical poverty, mercy, and creation. In addition to learning about the life, writings, and teachings of these two inspiring men, you will discover how these themes provide a model of Christian living in the modern world. Under the guidance of Franciscan theologian Fr. Daniel P. Horan, you will gain an appreciation for the uniqueness of the Franciscan tradition and the ways in which St. Francis' example have inspired a Jesuit pope in the 21st century. You will explore the profound Franciscan experiences of the practice of Christian prayer, the unmitigated embrace of evangelical poverty, the emulation of divine mercy when encountering all women and men, and a kinship with all of God's creatures. These key Franciscan spiritual themes were on the forefront of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio's mind when he took the papal name Francis. Throughout his pastoral ministry, Pope Francis has emulated them in his homilies, public addresses, interviews, prayers, apostolic exhortation, and encyclical letters. Let these two men named Francis guide your spirituality today. Photo of Pope Francis by Agencia Brasil/Tania Rego/ABr (CC BY Brazil 3.0). Language: English. Narrator: Daniel P. Horan. M. Stanton Evans (d. 2015) was one of the unsung heroes and key figures of the modern conservative movement, offering a model to be remembered and emulated in both thought and deed. A person of extraordinary breadth, he combined the roles of journalist, first-rank thinker, and political action, often at the center of crucial events for the conservative movement from the mid-1950s to his last decade in the 2010s. He was the principal author of the Sharon Statement, the founding document of Young Americans for Freedom. Evans was also a mentor to an entire generation of conservative writers and journalists, including Ann Coulter, John Fund, Martin Morse Wooster, Tim Carney, Richard Miniter, William McGurn, and this author. Evans was libertarian in economics and policy, traditionalist in moral and social matters, respectful of religion, and resolutely anti-Communist. Over the years he wrote a number of elegant articles and one book (The Theme is Freedom) that reconciled many of the strains that often appear between these differing schools of conservative thought. He also wrote a controversial defense of Joseph McCarthy (Blacklisted by History), which is one of many examples of his fearlessness in contesting the conventional wisdom. Beyond his professional profile, Stan was also known for his ironic dry wit, which only came out in person, as well as his personal modesty and kindliness, and fondness for fast-food, sports, and classic rock and roll music trivia. He was "the conservative for the common man.”

Many ancient civilizations have influenced and inspired people in the 21st century, like the Greeks and the Romans, but of all the world's civilizations, none have intrigued people more than the Mayans, whose culture, astronomy, language, and mysterious disappearance all continue to captivate people. At the heart of the fascination is Chichén Itzá, the most visited Mayan site, but Chichén Itzá's prominence lasted for less than 200 years and was eventually succeeded by Mayapán, which lasted as the capital of the Maya for nearly 225 years until the middle of the 15th century. The Mayans are still remembered and celebrated for their culture and their contributions to astronomy, language, and sports, and many of their advancements came with Mayapán as their capital. Early Mayapán was closely connected to the overshadowing power of the region at the time: the mighty trading city of Chichén Itzá. Mayapán emerged first as a minor settlement in the orbit of Chichén, but it slowly came to replace it after the larger city's trade connections with the Toltecs of Tula crumbled and it suffered a staggering defeat by Mayapán's armies. The building styles and art in their city show both admiring references to the great Chichén Itzá as well as an attempt to position Mayapán as a more orthodox heir of Maya tradition. At the same time, they emulated many features and could not escape the tremendous influences - especially in religion - of Chichén. This is seen in the fact that many of the most important buildings in the new city appear to be small-scale reproductions of ones in Chichén. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Gilboe.
