In David Sedaris' world, no one is safe and no cow is sacred. A manic cross between Mark Leyner, Fran Lebowitz, and the National Enquirer, Sedaris' collection of essays is a rollicking tour through the national Zeitgeist: a do-it-yourself suburban dad saves money by performing home surgery; a man who is loved too much flees the heavyweight champion of the world; a teenage suicide tries to incite a lynch mob at her funeral; a bitter Santa abuses the elves. David Sedaris made his debut on NPR's Morning Edition with "SantaLand Diaries", recounting his strange-but-true experiences as an elf at Macy's, and soon became one of the show's most popular commentators. With a perfect eye and a voice infused with as much empathy as wit, Sedaris writes stories and essays that target the soulful ridiculousness of our behaviour. Barrel Fever is like a blind date with modern life, and anything can happen. Language: English. Narrator: David Sedaris, Amy Sedaris. This week on Car Talk, actress Ashley Judd learns one downside of marriage to a professional race-car driver – he insists on driving every time they're in the car together. You'd think the guy would want a day off, wouldn't you? Find out if Tom and Ray can keep this auto-marital dispute off the front page of The National Enquirer. Elsewhere, Andy's steering wheel is making a noise which he'd like to handle with WD-40, but might be better taken care of by singing a chorus of "Chattanooga Choo Choo," and Tom in New Jersey would really like to blame a tow truck driver for his Honda's computer failure. Finally, Mary Rawson's friend has offered to fix her brakes for free, and perhaps get a date at the same time. Can she turn him down and still have a car that will stop? All this and lots more, this week, on Car Talk. [Broadcast Date: March 17, 2012] Language: English. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/rt/cart/120317/rt_cart_120317_sample.mp3. When his friend Peralta, newly sworn in as sheriff, is shot by a sniper, David Mapstone, former historian and new deputy sheriff, can’t keep a cool, academic distance - and he’d better not. While Peralta lies comatose in the hospital, the powers that be install Mapstone as acting sheriff in his friend’s place. Mapstone feels unqualified, but he’s the only person whose temporary appointment won’t infuriate all the other candidates, who want the sheriff’s position permanently. Meanwhile, a cryptic note scrawled by Peralta before the shooting forces Mapstone to confront his own personal history, inadvertently drawing him into danger. Mapstone soon discovers that the past has deadly consequences and the mean streets of the new West have never been more sinister. Jon Talton is the author of nine novels, including the David Mapstone Mysteries and the thriller Deadline Man. He is also a veteran journalist and the former business editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer. A new definitive volume of the retirement papers of Thomas JeffersonThis volume's 627 documents feature a vast assortment of topics. Jefferson writes of his dread of "a doting old age." He inserts an anonymous note in the Richmond Enquirer denying that he has endorsed a candidate for the next presidential election, and he publishes two letters in that newspaper under his own name to refute a Federalist claim that he once benefited by overcharging the United States Treasury. Jefferson does not reply to unsolicited letters seeking his opinion on constitutional matters, judicial review, and a call for universal white male suffrage in Virginia. Fearing that it would set a dangerous precedent, he declines appointment as patron of a new society "for the civilisation of the Indians." Jefferson is also asked to comment on proposed improvements to stoves, lighthouses, telescopes, and navigable balloons. Citing his advanced age and stiffened wrist, he avoids detailed replies and allows his complaint to John Adams about the volume of incoming correspondence to be leaked to the press in hopes that strangers will stop deluging them both with letters. Jefferson approves of the growth of Unitarianism and predicts that "there is not a young man now living in the US. who will not die an Unitarian."
