William Ruffin of Rouen, France, was 16 years old in 1562 when he sailed for the New World. This story is based on theevents of his adventures as documented by both French and Spanish eyewitness chroniclers. In order to avoid the Spanish who "owned" so much of America, they landed north of Florida, on thecoast of South Carolina. They hastily built a fort and left 27 volunteers there, William among them. Outside the fort the country was beautiful. William soon made friends in the Indian village and learned some of their language. But inside the fort things went so badly that violence exploded, William had to flee, was found wounded by his Indian friends, and would never return.
