A Vietnam special-forces veteran investigates a government conspiracy to build a superweapon that could alter the very fabric of reality. In San Diego, a cadre of American scientists toils on a weapon with the power to make things flit in and out of reality. If perfected, Project Vortex will make the atomic bomb look like a bow and arrow. They test it on a 727 on its way into Kennedy airport, and the experiment is successful, save for two dangerous aberrations. First is a passenger, a young man to whom Vortex gives strange powers over other people - powers he can control, but cannot understand. Second is an air traffic controller who calls in an old Vietnam buddy, Joshua Bane, to help investigate the plane that disappeared. When the controller vanishes, Bane is alone, staring down the barrel of government conspiracy that has the nation on the precipice of a third world war. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: J. Following the success of his latest novel, Travis Glasgow and his wife Jodie buy their first house in the seemingly idyllic western Maryland town of Westlake. At first, everything is picture-perfect - from the beautiful lake behind the house to the rebirth of the friendship between Travis and his brother, Adam, who lives nearby. Travis also begins to overcome the darkness of his childhood and the guilt he's harbored since his younger brother's death - a tragic drowning veiled in mystery that has plagued Travis since he was 13. Soon, though, the new house begins to lose its allure. Strange noises wake Travis at night, and his dreams are plagued by ghosts. Barely glimpsed shapes flit through the darkened hallways, but strangest of all is the bizarre set of wooden stairs that rises cryptically out of the lake behind the house. Travis becomes drawn to the structure, but the more he investigates, the more he uncovers the house's violent and tragic past, and the more he learns that some secrets cannot be buried forever. ungekürzt. If you're looking to improve your concentration and focus, then this audiobook is for you! Most people today have the attention span and focus of a hyper-caffeinated squirrel chomping down on methamphetamines like Tic Tacs. We hop from unfinished project to unfinished project, flit around piled-up work by giving in to accessible diversions at the drop of a hat, and so on and so forth - until we're left with ever-increasing piles of work and ignored responsibilities and basically as much control over our minds as a junkie going through withdrawal.  But instead of playing slave to our minds, we can wrest back that lost control through a series of simple tips and everyday exercises. After all, curiosity is an excellent trait - in moderation - and if we bend our minds to our will, instead of the other way around, we can amp up productivity, focus, etc., while achieving a calmer mental state. And that is the purpose of this audiobook!  So, are you ready to delve into these secrets, new and old, and gain control back over your mind from these never-ending distractions?  Here is a preview of what you'll learn: Practicing mindfulness and stillness  Breathing exercises  The effects of memory games  Dexterity exercises  Focusing on your own body  Self-policing  Helpful daily routines  Much, much more! ungekürzt. Paris, 1940. The city of lights has gone dark. Twenty-year-old Michel Bonnet lives on the edge of the law, finding work where he can breaking in horses on the outskirts of Paris. But when the Nazis invade, Michel takes refuge as a stowaway on a rickety train bound for the rural South of France. It’s a journey that will change his life forever. The train is property of Le Cirque Neumann - a travelling circus owned by the troubled and irritable showman Werner Neumann. Neumann offers Michel a job caring for the company’s horses - a lucky break, but with an unusual condition attached. Michel must keep to himself and never speak of what he sees behind the glittering curtain of the big top. But as Michel finds himself pulled into the strange and wondrous world of the great spectacular, it becomes more difficult to keep his promise. Why does the man with the performing monkey never speak and the sword swallower turn his face away? Who are the silent, shadowy figures who flit like moths between the wagons when the sun is down? It’s clear that Neumann is keeping his performers hidden away...but why? And how can Michel win the love of the beautiful and exotic trapeze artist Freida - the graceful, green-eyed star of Neuman’s spectacular - when he’s been forbidden to even meet her gaze? An emotional and uplifting wartime novel - perfect for fans of Water for Elephants, The Nightingale, and The Tattooist of Auschwitz. ungekürzt. Tono-Bungay is very possibly H. G. Wells' finest novel, bringing together so many strands of his work: that of the novelist, the scientific romancer, the humorist, the historian, and the prophet-like sociologist. It was published in 1909, and although Wells was disappointed by its poor sales, Arnold Bennett praised it thus: "When with the thrill of emotion that a great work communicates I finished reading Tono-Bungay, I was filled with a holy joy because Wells had stirred up the dregs again and more violently than ever.... Human nature - you get it pretty complete in Tono-Bungay." George Ponderevo is the novel's first person narrator, his mother the housekeeper of Bladesover House, a great country house in Sussex, that Wells uses throughout the novel to embody the decline of England, its certainties and its values. Tono-Bungay is Dickensian in stature, broad in its social panorama, taking George from childhood in the 1860s, to Chatham in Kent, to teeming London, to Africa and France: His life unfolds warts and all, as he rubs shoulders with every class, goes to live with his aunt and uncle, a Wimblehurst chemist, who goes on to invent a patent medicine of dubious efficacy, that he names, for no obvious reason, Tono-Bungay. George goes up to London to study, falls in love, goes to work for his increasingly wealthy uncle, abandons academia, marries, returns to the study of aeronautics (theory and practice), eventually attempting to dig the crumbling family business out of a very deep hole, by prospecting illegally for a nastily radioactive substance called quap on Mordet Island, and even attempting a moonlit flit in the Lord Roberts beta flying machine. George Ponderevo is a mass of contradictions, seeking truth in science, truth in romance, mourning the passing of old England, chasing the new and the novel. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Energy of the LineFrederic Anderson's (b. Luxembourg, 1973; lives and works in London) paintings are distinguished by a pervasive sense of fluidity. They consist of colorful traces ranging from curt dashes to long and languid lines that flit across the canvas. Anderson harnesses the visceral gestures of untrained and spontaneous graphical practices such as graffiti and children's scrawls as well as elements of calligraphy. The airbrush, a tool that allows for the rapid application of paint, is central to his technique, lending vibrant momentum to works that suggest the inspiration of Cy Twombly or Martin Barre .Titled High Drama, Tantric Dreams, the artist's first monograph presents his most recent works. Alex Bacon contributed an essay and spoke to the artist.
