Acclaimed actress Claire Danes burnishes an epic story of heroes, gods, and monsters in a groundbreaking translation of The Odyssey, the first great adventure story in the Western literary tradition. When the wily warrior-king Odysseus sets off for home after the Trojan War, he doesn’t realize this simple undertaking will become a perilous journey of 10 years. Beset at every turn, he encounters obstacles, detours, and temptations—both supernatural and human—while his wife Penelope fends off would-be suitors desperate to take the throne.Emily Wilson is the first woman to take on the daunting task of translating over 100,000 lines of a three-millennium-old poem from Ancient Greek to modern-day English. Her breathtaking rendition captures the poetic immediacy of the original text, while allowing listeners to experience The Odyssey with an honesty and directness few other versions have achieved. The result is a lean, fleet-footed translation that recaptures Homer’s “nimble gallop” and brings an ancient epic to new life. A fascinating introduction provides an informative overview of the Bronze Age milieu that produced the epic, the major themes of the poem, the controversies about its origins, and the unparalleled scope of its impact and influence. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.  ungekürzt. The Aldrich Family was a popular teenage situation comedy that was heard on radio and seen in films, television and comic books. The creation of playwright Clifford Goldsmith, teenager Henry Aldrich was an endearingly bumbling kid growing awkwardly into adolescence. Episodes revolved around Henry’s misadventures with girls, his family and his friends. Portrayed on radio by 20-something Ezra Stone, The Aldrich Family launched as a summer replacement program for Jack Benny in NBC’s Sunday night lineup, July 2nd, 1939, sponsored by Jell-O. Stone kept the lead role until 1942, when he entered the Army for WWII. Several actors took over until Stone returned to his signature role, including Bobby Ellis who became the last Henry Aldrich in 1952. House Jameson and Katharine Raht portrayed Henry’s parents, Sam and Alice. Mary Shipp played Henry’s usual girlfriend, Kathleen Anderson. Jackie Kelk played the role of Henry’s best friend, Homer Brown, for most of the run. In 1949, the program made the leap to television while continuing to air on radio with a different cast. 10/10/39 “Henry’s Engagement” 5/28/40 “Cross Country Race” 1/29/42 “Henry’s Secret Admirer” 2/11/43 “Valentine’s Day Party” 2/25/43 “Henry’s Love Note Goes to His Teacher” 10/7/48 “Henry Rents Out Mary’s Room” 10/14/48 “The Great Weiner Roast” 10/28/48 “Detention or Basketball Game?” 11/11/48 “The Broken Toy” 12/16/48 “Homer’s Party” 2/17/49 “The Antique Chairs” 5/5/49 “Engaged to Agnes”  Language: English. Tales of Brave Ulysses is book six of the alternative history series Timeline 10/27/62.Ulysses is the English form of Ulixes, which in turn is the Latin form of the Greek Odysseus, hero Homer’s Iliad that tells the story of the great Trojan Wars, and the Odyssey which recounts the fable of his long journey home from those wars. It is April 1964 in a world in which the ‘swinging 60s’ never happened.War is chaos; and chaos is war. The post-October War world is at a bloody crossroads; betrayal and confusion preoccupies and distracts the West to the disasters about to befall newly remade, desperately fragile alliances as long kept secrets surface. The impenetrable fog of war spreads across the Mediterranean. Even while Malta burns and the survivors of the savage naval battle off its coast fight for their lives in the wreckage-strewn iron grey waters, the brittle rapprochement between the two trans-Atlantic pre-war nuclear superpowers comes under intolerable pressure both from within and without. The new Anglo-American alliance has failed its first test and while the blame game rages, events are moving at terrifying speed. The enemies of the United States and the United Kingdom are finally ready to strike a devastating blow.Like the Greeks of classical antiquity after ten years besieging Troy, the war weary, disillusioned peoples of what remains of the pre-October War free world are badly in need of heroes. And like the Greeks of yore, they too await the return of their brave Odysseus to give them hope for a better future. Please be warned - cliffhanger ending! The Timeline 10/27/62 - Main Series is:Book 1: Operation AnadyrBook 2: Love Is StrangeBook 3: The Pillars of HerculesBook 4: Red DawnBook 5: The Burning TimeBook 6: Tales of Brave Ulysses ungekürzt. The pre-modern world, especially the ancient world, is full of many mysteries, riddles, and enigmas that have perplexed scholars and lay people alike for centuries. One does not have to search long to find some of these mysteries. Ancient Egypt is often thought of as one of the most arcane of all civilizations with many aspects of its culture that are only now coming to light. For instance, the hieroglyphic script was not deciphered until the 19th century and to date scholars are still unsure about the details concerning how the pyramids were built or how mummies were made since there are no extant ancient “guidebooks” of either. Likewise, the oldest European culture to reach the status of “civilization” - the Minoans - remains a mystery to the modern world in many ways.Nearly 2,500 years after the Golden Age of Athens, people across the world today continue to be fascinated by the Ancient Greeks, but the Greeks looked up to the Minoans. In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus makes note of “a great town there, Cnossus, where Minos reigned.” It was perhaps the earliest reference to the Minoan civilization, a mysterious ancient civilization that historians and archaeologists still puzzle over, but a civilization that renowned historian Will Durant described as "the first link in the European chain."Nearly 2,000 years before Homer wrote his epic poems, the Minoan civilization was centered on the island of Crete, a location that required the Minoans to be a regional sea power. And indeed they were, stretching across the Aegean Sea from about 2700-1500 BCE, with trade routes extending all the way to Egypt.Archaeologists have found evidence that many of the Cretan cities suffered severe damage and were ravaged by fire at the same time Minoan trade diminished. Although some of the cities were reoccupied and partially rebuilt, the Minoan civilization never fully recovered. Recent archaeological finds have led to a consensus among scholars that the Mi ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem.
