Although life was physically more difficult in the days of the horse and carriage, we complained much less back then, and when we did, our complaints were more likely to get results. Today we complain about everything - yet do so with remarkable ineffectiveness. Most of us grumble, vent, and kvetch, neither expecting nor getting meaningful resolutions. Wasting prodigious amounts of time and energy on unproductive complaints can take an emotional and psychological toll on our moods and well-being. We desperately need to relearn the art of complaining effectively. Psychotherapist Guy Winch offers practical and psychologically grounded advice on how to determine what to complain about and what to let slide. He demonstrates how to convey our complaints in ways that encourage cooperation and increase the likelihood of getting resolutions to our dissatisfactions. The principles he spells out apply whether we're dealing with a rude store clerk, a bureaucrat, a coworker, our teenager, or a spouse or partner who's driving us crazy. Complaining constructively can be extremely empowering and it can significantly strengthen our personal, familial, and work relationships. Applying our new-found complaining skills to customer service representatives, corporate leaders, and elected officials increases the odds that our comments will be taken seriously. If we all complained more effectively, squeaky wheels could change our own lives as well as the world for the better. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Guy Winch, Ph.D.. Until one is committed, there will always be hesitancy - and a chance to draw back. This usually results in ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creativity, there is one elemental truth which is the ignorance that kills countless ideas and splendid plans. The moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves, too. This is certainly true for Tonny Tonniez, a young man on a mission to cause a change in the consciousness of people of the 21st century. Being present is the key, and to live in the now is the will power that one needs to sail through life. All sorts of things occur to help one that never otherwise would happen. A whole stream of events issues from the decision raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings, and material assistance which no man could dream coming his way. Whatever you can do or dare to dream, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and the spirit in it. Faith must be tested, because it can be turned into personal possession only through conduct. This can be broken down as follows: F = Faith / Belief A = Attitude / Positive I = Intuition / Listening T = Trust / Tenacity H = Hard work /Helpfulness/ Humor/ Humility Love and compassion...are the ultimate sources of human happiness, and our need for them lies at the very core of our being. David Russell,A Child Unheard Limited,Crowthorne, Berkshire ungekürzt. Traumatized veterans are often diagnosed as suffering from a psychiatric disorder and prescribed a regimen of psychotherapy and psychiatric drugs. But why, asks psychologist Paula J. Caplan in this impassioned audiobook, is it a mental illness to be devastated by war or other intolerable experiences such as military sexual assault? What is a mentally healthy response to death, destruction, and moral horror? In When Johnny and Jane Come Marching Home, Caplan argues that the standard treatment of therapy and drugs is often actually harmful. It adds to veterans' burdens by making them believe wrongly that they should have "gotten over it"; it isolates them behind the closed doors of the therapist's office; and it makes them rely on often harmful drugs. The numbers of traumatized veterans from past and present wars who continue to suffer demonstrate the ineffectiveness of this approach.Sending anguished veterans off to talk to therapists, writes Caplan, conveys the message that the rest of us don't want to listen - or that we don't feel qualified to listen. As a result, the truth about war is kept under wraps. Most of us remain ignorant about what war is really like - and continue to allow our governments to go to war without much protest. Caplan proposes an alternative: that we welcome veterans back into our communities and listen to their stories, one-on-one. (She provides guidelines for conducting these conversations.) This would begin a long-overdue national discussion about the realities of war, and it would start the healing process for our returning veterans. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Paula J. Few leaders will admit it, but again and again the growth of their organizations outruns their skills. If you're one of those leaders, you know the result: as the job grows bigger than you are, you get disoriented by a world of unfamiliar challenges. You then hit a wall of ineffectiveness, a stall point. Why won't doubling down on the managerial and technical building blocks that have worked before help you out of a stall? Because you invariably neglect the new political, personal, strategic, and interpersonal skills needed to manage yourself and others. Predictable and inevitable, your stall then escalates into a crisis. And the crisis escalates faster the higher you go, since challenges of sophistication dwarf those of complexity at higher organizational levels. What Happens Now?: Reinvent Yourself as a Leader Before Your Business Outruns You helps you to embrace this reality. It shows how sophistication requires you do things you've never done before -inspire people, nurture relationships, energize teams, groom successors, influence stakeholders. What Happens Now? doesn't dwell on leadership theory and philosophy. As troubleshooters for leaders of all kinds, authors John Hillen and Mark Nevins focus on the most menacing issue they see in organizations every day: leaders who try to solve challenges solely by engineering solutions to more complexity-process mapping, data analytics, information systems, instant reports. The result? Organizational wreckage. Will this be your fate? Can you instead turn game-stopping stalls into personal growth and organization success? Can you struggle through the realization that you're the cause and launch the next phase of your lifelong leadership journey? Can you reinvent yourself? Hillen and Nevins show you how. If the dozens of leaders they profile can overcome these stalls, so can you. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Stephen Bel Davies. This book is for people who want (or need) answers. Greater understanding yields better treatment outcomes. If this premise rings true, this revolutionary new book by Adam McArnold will greatly enhance and improve treatment outcomes. It challenges the traditional clinical approach to treatment by offering a new groundbreaking approach to all the puzzles posed to us by chemical addictions. In The Affliction of Addiction, McArnold confronts the importance of beliefs regarding various causes of addiction and how they impact treatment effectiveness and recovery. Specifically, he argues that beliefs about where addictions originate impact many areas of clinical treatment, from how information is interpreted to how clients are perceived to how treatment is applied. He explains, "I wanted to do something about all the confusion, ambiguity, and biased opinions that seem to rule the direction of treatment and that contribute to its ineffectiveness while highlighting a more inclusive and accurate application of our new scientific evidence." McArnold notes that The Affliction of Addiction contains vitally important explanations for the cause of addiction that reduce shame and guilt, conquer episodes of doubt, and provide a solid foundation for a complete, unwavering, and satisfying recovery. In short, he emphasizes, these scientifically sound explanations will help to extinguish the stigma of addiction and offer numerous treatment benefits. Grounded in extensive clinical study and containing an exhaustive references section, The Affliction of Addiction seeks to unite all those in the fight against addiction, whether they struggle personally, are affected by the addiction of another, clinicians in the field, health providers, or students in any field of human service. ungekürzt. Winner of a 2012 Stonewall Book Award in nonfiction The first book to cover the entirety of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history, from pre-1492 to the present.   In the 1620s, Thomas Morton broke from Plymouth Colony and founded Merrymount, which celebrated same-sex desire, atheism, and interracial marriage. Transgender evangelist Jemima Wilkinson, in the early 1800s, changed her name to “Publick Universal Friend”, refused to use pronouns, fought for gender equality, and led her own congregation in upstate New York. In the mid-19th century, internationally famous Shakespearean actor Charlotte Cushman led an openly lesbian life, including a well-publicized “female marriage.” And in the late 1920s, Augustus Granville Dill was fired by W. E. B. Du Bois from the NAACP’s magazine the Crisis after being arrested for a homosexual encounter. These are just a few moments of queer history that Michael Bronski highlights in this groundbreaking book.   Intellectually dynamic and endlessly provocative, A Queer History of the United States is more than a “who’s who” of queer history: it is a book that radically challenges how we understand American history. Drawing upon primary documents, literature, and cultural histories, noted scholar and activist Michael Bronski charts the breadth of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history, from 1492 to the 1990s, and has written a testament to how the LGBT experience has profoundly shaped our country, culture, and history.   A Queer History of the United States abounds with startling examples of unknown or often ignored aspects of American history - the ineffectiveness of sodomy laws in the colonies, the prevalence of cross-dressing women soldiers in the Civil War, the impact of new technologies on LGBT life in the 19th century, and how rock music and popular culture were, in large part, responsible for the devastating backlash against gay rights in the late 1970s. ungekürzt. Modern medicine today has very little to offer those who are hopelessly addicted to opioids and heroin. What they do provide are either detoxing agents or weak substitutes in order to stave off the horrendous withdrawal sickness individuals who take opioids and heroin experience when they do not have the ability to obtain their respective substances. In many ways, the inadequacy of modern medicine to address these issues is for the most part due to the "War on Drugs". Addiction at least as far as law enforcement is concerned is not considered a physical issue but a social one and thus they are ill prepared to address it adequately. Some addicts know they are in deep trouble and have sought professional help, but the "professionals" have let them down. Due to the ineffectiveness of the addiction treatment juggernaut, the addicted person goes out to seek some kind of alterative that will allow them to eventually stop drugs without experiencing serious withdrawal. One of these alternatives is called Kratom. Kratom is a plant that has been shown to have a very profound effect on the lives of those addicted to opioids and heroin; in fact, it is a lifesaver to many. At least it was until the DEA recently banned it and made it a controlled substance. Once so readily available, it is now illegal to possess it. The question remains, why did they ban it? It was shown to be very useful to those who were trying to kick their dependence on heroin and opioids. In fact, it was too effective. Are there risks to taking Kratom? Of course, just like every medicine, but the overall risk is low compared to its proven benefits. In this book, I am going to explore what Kratom is and why I believe the DEA banned it. I will present compelling information that will illustrate that the only real reason the DEA banned Kratom was because Big Pharma, aka the pharmaceutical companies, want Kratom to themselves because they know it works. ungekürzt.
