The history of Naples is long and tortured, or at least for centuries that was how its history has been told. Inhabited almost continuously from the Neolithic era to the present, Naples was founded by the Greeks and conquered by the Romans. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Naples passed between various foreign rulers for its entire history prior to Italian unification. Starting in 1040, when the Norman French invaders conquered Campania, Naples was ruled in a dizzying succession by Germans, then French, then Spanish, then Austrians, then Spanish, then French, and then Spanish. Although it is in many ways a microcosm of European history with a revolving door of conquerors, historians like to stress the unique status of Naples thanks to these diverse influences and unique geography. Set on a bay that provided a natural harbor, Naples is home to Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano on the European mainland. When Vesuvius erupts, the Neapolitans pay the price, and it has earned its reputation as the most dangerous volcano in the world. However, the threat posed by Vesuvius is tempered by a great benefit: Naples is blessed with extremely fertile soil. The natural harbor of Naples and its position on the southwest coast of Italy helps explain its history of multiple rulers, insofar as it made Naples a central locus of trade between Italy, Greece, Byzantium, North Africa, Spain, Holland, Flanders, and Germany. Due to its strategic importance, Naples reached high levels of prosperity, and for the same reason, it also suffered as various foreign powers vied for control of the city and the surrounding area. All the while, the sheer beauty of the bay of Naples, with Vesuvius looming in the distance, has made Naples a place of endless fascination. It boasts imposing castles and fortresses, as well as twisty, turning medieval streets that are home to some of Italy’s poorest and most maligned residents. Across the bay are the islands of Capri and Is ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/160944/bk_acx0_160944_sample.mp3. The first three books in the Immortal Series, in one box set!Book one: ImmortalSurviving sixty thousand years takes cunning and more than a little luck. But in the twenty-first century, Adam confronts new dangers - someone has found out what he is, a demon is after him, and he has run out of places to hide. Worst of all, he has had entirely too much to drink.Immortal is a first person confessional penned by a man who is immortal, but not invincible. In an artful blending of sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, and humor, Immortal introduces us to a world with vampires, demons, and other “magical” creatures, yet a world without actual magic.Book two: Hellenic ImmortalAn oracle has predicted the sojourner’s end, which is a problem for Adam insofar as he has never encountered an oracular prediction that didn’t come true...and he is the sojourner. To survive, he’s going to have to figure out what a beautiful ex-government analyst, an eco-terrorist, a rogue FBI agent, and the world’s oldest religious cult all want with him, and fast. And all he wanted when he came to Vegas was to forget about a girl. And maybe have a drink or two.Book three: Immortal at the Edge of the WorldIn his very long life, Adam had encountered only one person who seemed to share his longevity: the mysterious red-haired woman. She appeared throughout history, usually from a distance, nearly always vanishing before he could speak to her.In his last encounter, she actually did vanish - into thin air, right in front of him. The question was how did she do it? To answer, Adam will have to complete a quest he gave up on a thousand years earlier, for an object that may no longer exist. If he can find it, he might be able to do what the red-haired woman did, and if he can do that, maybe he can find her again and ask her who she is...and why she seems to hate him. ungekürzt. This book presents the relationship between ultrafilters and topologies on groups. It shows how ultrafilters are used in constructing topologies on groups with extremal properties and how topologies on groups serve in deriving algebraic results about ultrafilters. The contents of the book fall naturally into three parts. The first, comprising Chapters 1 through 5, introduces to topological groups and ultrafilters insofar as the semigroup operation on ultrafilters is not required. Constructions of some important topological groups are given. In particular, that of an extremally disconnected topological group based on a Ramsey ultrafilter. Also one shows that every infinite group admits a nondiscrete zero-dimensional topology in which all translations and the inversion are continuous. In the second part, Chapters 6 through 9, the Stone-Cêch compactification betaG of a discrete group G is studied. For this, a special technique based on the concepts of a local left group and a local homomorphism is developed. One proves that if G is a countable torsion free group, then betaG contains no nontrivial finite groups. Also the ideal structure of betaG is investigated. In particular, one shows that for every infinite Abelian group G, betaG contains 22 G minimal right ideals. In the third part, using the semigroup betaG, almost maximal topological and left topological groups are constructed and their ultrafilter semigroups are examined. Projectives in the category of finite semigroups are characterized. Also one shows that every infinite Abelian group with finitely many elements of order 2 is absolutely -resolvable, and consequently, can be partitioned into subsets such that every coset modulo infinite subgroup meets each subset of the partition. The book concludes with a list of open problems in the field. Some familiarity with set theory, algebra and topology is presupposed. But in general, the book is almost self-contained. It is aimed at graduate students and researchers working in topological algebra and adjacent areas.

The book Huts Hedges Heaps (Ingar Krauss's second publication with Hartmann Books after 39 Bilder of 2016) is about human order in nature. The laconic photographs of small, rural gardens that Krauss shot between 2010 and 2017 particularly in Brandenburg show concentrated traces of human efforts to create order, which take on graphic and sculptural dimensions in the pictures' structure. In the Black Forest he produced pictures of wood piles, whose man-made forms seem even more abstract because they organically fit into the structures of their natural surroundings, recalling the work of Land artists. The huts, hedges, and heaps are connected to the American New Topographic movement of the 1970s insofar as they "fulfill everything that people wanted in a picture in those days, overturning an observation into a 'higher' order of some kind; the monumentalization of the everyday, not by resorting to monumentalizing genres, but by the captivating composition of the image," as Ulf Erdmann Ziegler writes.

I'd rather be called King than other things I've been called.” (Richard Petty)A person may not know anything about baseball, but they still likely know the name Babe Ruth. Others may not watch football, but they still likely know who Tom Brady is. And most people have never been to a stock car race, but they’ve likely heard of Richard Petty, along with his simple but fitting nickname: “The King”.Of course, there are plenty of reasons why Petty is so legendary, and why “The King” is more than merely a nickname. The name is an acknowledgment that Richard Petty is quite possibly the greatest driver in the history of stock car racing, and while some may debate that, nobody can argue that he is the winningest driver in the history of National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing-sanctioned events. Over the course of 34 years, Petty won 200 races in his career, was the first driver to win the NASCAR Cup Championship seven times (the others being Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson), and to date is the only driver to win under different points systems. He won NASCAR’s biggest race, the Daytona 500, a record seven times, and he holds the record for the most wins in a single season (27 out of 49 races in 1967). Petty holds the record for number of starts from the pole (127), number of Top 10 finishes (over 700), and total starts (1,184). Such was his standing that he was one of the three drivers (along with Dale Earnhardt and Junior Johnson) inducted into the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010.Petty has famously claimed that he never actually retired, but simply quit driving, and he remains active in the sport well into his 80's as the owner of Richard Petty Motorsports. He is still a frequent sight on race day in his signature cowboy hat and sunglasses, a look that has made him instantly recognizable over many decades. More than any other person, Richard Petty represents the transition of NASCAR stock car racing from a Southern regio UNKNOWN N N ©2020 Charles River Editors;(P)2020 Charles River Editors http://www.audible.de/pd/B087HKKNG8?source_code=PNHFA145032019009G&ipRedirectOverride=true http://www.audible.de/pd/B087HKKNG8?source_code=PNHFA145032019009G&ipRedirectOverride=true The Etruscans and the First Romans: The History and Legacy of the Civilizations That Fought for Control of Italy (Unabridged) 7.95 AVAILABLE The Etruscans and the First Romans: The History and Legacy of the Civilizations That Fought for Control of Italy (Unabridged) The Etruscans and the First Romans (Unabridged) Charles River Editors When people think of ancient Italy, the Romans are usually the first and last people who come to mind, but long before Rome was built by Latin-speaking people, the culture of Italy was dominated by the Etruscans.... Although the Etruscans may not comprise the core of most histories of the ancient Mediterranean, they exerted a profound influence on the region from the eighth to fifth centuries BCE that continued to resonate for centuries after as the Romans carried on many of their traditions. Today, much of what is known about the Etruscans comes from the ancient Roman and Greek writers who had a deep respect for them but saw them as exotic and foreign. As the famous Roman philosopher Seneca wrote about the Etruscans, “Whereas we believe lightning to be released as a result of the collision of clouds, they believe that the clouds collide so as to release lightning: for as they attribute all to deity, they are led to believe not that things have a meaning insofar as they occur, but rather that they occur because they must have a meaning.” The Etruscans referred to themselves as “Rasenna” in their own language, but the Greeks called them “Tyrrhenians”, and the Romans referred to them as “Etrusci”, which is where the modern term Etruscan is derived (Cornell 1995, 45). As this suggests, reconstructing Etruscan history is based primarily on the Greco-Roman accounts, but other sources are utilized by modern scholars to create a more accurate picture. Unfortunately, despite the fact the Etruscans were a literate people, their own histories have disappeared without a trace. Nevertheless, even with this lack of primary sources, the abundance of classical writings about the Etruscans and modern historical, archaeological, and art historical studies can establish an image of Etruscan history and culture that, although not complete, is enough for scholars to arrive at some important conclusions. Those who - even just rudimentary - have followed the evolution of electronic music over the last twenty years, know about the outstanding importance of von Oswald's timeless classics like Domina, M-4 or the whole Basic Channel series. Insofar, Cocoon Dark Dub is maybe the nicest birthday present at all, and an absolute honour for our label. (Sven Väth) So, initially, it's the heartbeat of Dub Techno that pulsates through a lonely piano and noise fractals, and club world keeps its breath for a good eight minutes. However, the Compilation J literally puts out all the stops over the following 110 minutes playtime and shows what modern electronic dance music has to offer in these times. The Dial impresario Pantha Du Prince from Hamburg is celebrating crystalline ice dance (Bolder), while Cécille label head Nick Curly, with his sensual Tribal House, is feasting the most compact form of Disco Boogie that one can imagine (Keep On). With SBooty, the Kompakt ambassador DJ Koze, also from Hamburg, is flabbergasting the audience by combining virtually incompatible elements. Improvised horn licks are whirring through a flickering resonating body while the bass kick is filling up the tropic ambient air. However, the invariably Cocoon policy to always support interesting newcomers becomes visible in the contribution of Basti Grub from the Rhine Neckar area, whose label Höhenregler is well-known for several musical insider tips in the past. Sick is ascending into your brain immediately with its melodic high-frequency hook line and mysterious vocals, matching perfectly to the melancholic playfulness of the tracks by Guy Gerber. Deep Dish member Ali Shirazinia aka Dubfire and the Parisian Popof are the ones to prove impressively that you virtually can't go wrong with stringent Hypno Techno and a diaphragm-shaking bass drum. Besides the above-mentioned, the J compilation holds such well-known producers like Loco Dice, Extrawelt, Reboot and last not least long-time Cocoon companion Ricardo Villalobos, whose 12-minutes-long dance on the echo-filled Humusweg once again draws the bow to the Basic Channel sound from another side, and leaves much room for own visions in between the pulsing metronome of the bass line. In any case, the history of electronic dance music has not been outtold so far. TRACKS: 1. Moritz Von Oswald - Cocoon Dark Dub 2. Basti Grub & Komaton - Sick 3. Pantha Du Prince - Bolder 4. SOLO CLARINET Mexico Vol. 1 Javier Vinasco Fifty years of music for solo clarinet. Mexico (1957-2007) Composers born in the 20th century To record a CD for solo clarinet with pieces by Mexican composers has been an arduous, difficult, and at the same time rewarding undertaking. On this journey we have investigated a variety of routes and paths that composers had taken and have come to recognize that there is an ample compendium of creators dedicated to writing for the clarinet. These composers have explored languages that range from the acknowledgment of tradition to less conventional experimentations, demonstrating both significant evolution and compositional maturity. Our efforts have resulted in an anthology that shows a glimpse of the variety, quality, and expressivity of the ample spectrum of compositions that, in this case, were selected with an inquisitive spirit from archives, catalogs and private collections. At the same time, this CD presents two new compositions written especially for this project by Alejandro Colavita and Fernando Cataño. Mario Lavista (1943- ) wrote Madrigal (1985), in collaboration with the clarinetist Luis Humberto Ramos, to whom the piece was dedicated. It is a work articulated in two contrasting sections: the first calls to mind the medieval form of the madrigal with the use of a single pedal and two voices, one superior and the other inferior, thus creating an illusion of polyphony within the instrument's monophonic possibilities. The second section, on the other hand, makes use of non-conventional fingerings to achieve different colours of the same note as well as to produce two or more sounds simultaneously. Lavista then re-elaborates this resource, for the piece's conclusion, in an organum, and so, achieves coherence and unity. Elegía (1962) by composer, Manuel de Elías (1939- ), is a piece in a single movement of lyrical nature in which there is a perceived motor impulse from beginning to end. In Imago (1977), the composer liberates the metric and delves deep into the use of technology external to the instrument, in this case the echo chamber, affecting the clarinet's sound. This device provokes in the listener an alternate perception of sounds from the direct source with other moments in which one can detect their reflection. Divertimento (1985) by composer, Gabriela Ortiz (1964- ) and dedicated to Luis Humberto Ramos, is a piece written in a single movement that retains a rhythmic preeminence and that has it's roots in popular music. Although this is one of her earliest compositions, it is possible to recognize -by the construction of phrases and her ample dynamic palette- an efficient combination of technique and intuition. The náhuatl legend of the 'five suns' is the background for the piece titled Macuiltonatiuh (2007), by the composer, Alejandro Colavita (1973- ). This composition was worked closely with the clarinetist, Javier Vinasco, to whom it was dedicated. Macuiltonatiuh is comprised of five continuous movements in a contemporary language that makes use of the extensive gamut of expressive resources in today's clarinet technique. It is possible to discern a search for timbres which, in turn, determine each movement's structure, as well as the overall form of the piece. It is a pursuit that initiates in the depths of the lowest register of the clarinet (shalomuo register) and slides, in continuous ascent, to the instrument's highest limits. Clamoreo (1991) for clarinet and magnetic tape, by the composer Víctor Rasgado (1959- ) is a fragment from his opera Anacleto Morones. Here, the composer carries out a timbrical exploration by combining an acoustic instrument with electronic sounds. It is written in a single movement in which the clarinet presents two motives that persist throughout the entire piece, thus reacting to the changes generated by the tape. Tres Epigramas (1999), for their part, are movements elaborated as independent and self-contained units in which one can appreciate the influences of serialism. The first and third were dedicated to Guido Arbonelli while the second was dedicated to José Luis Nieto Bustamante. Fernando Cataño (1928- ) wrote Llanuras and Ternura in 1957 and 2006, respectively. Both pieces are composed in a single movement in which the inspiration originates from a mystical search undertaken by the composer. Through contemplation, Cataño explores themes related to Mexico's religious syncretism. In these searches, the composer exalts mestizo spirituality within a nationalist frame, and so, demonstrates congruency throughout his pieces with the use of common elements present from his earliest compositions. Up to this point, Llanuras had remained unedited, while Ternura was composed especially for this project. In this recording both pieces make their first public appearance. Cuatro estudios (1975) by composer Jorge Córdoba (1953- ) have a didactic purpose insofar as they develop the musician's technical abilities while exploring different musical elements in each one of them. In the first, articulation works in function of the phrasing, in the second, rhythm is explore by combining measures in simple and compound time, the third fosters perfection of the legato technique, while the fourth contrasts with the previous one, by emphasizing the use of staccato notes. Javier Vinasco is currently one of the most distinguished clarinet players in Latin America. He devotes a significant amount of his work to the interpretation and diffusion of his continent's music, as can be appreciated in his recordings with Música de Cámara Latinoamericana and Cero Records. His warmth and depth of sound, his pure technique and his refined musicality have led diverse composers - among them, Diego Vega, Jesús Lara, Nathan Bounviri and Alejandro Colavita- to write pieces specifically for him. His presentations -including chamber concerts, soloist appearances with orchestral accompaniment, master classes and courses- have been received enthusiastically by critics and public alike in Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Panama, Italy, the United States, Canada and Japan. Javier holds a Bachelor's degree from Colombia's Universidad del Valle, perfectionism of clarinet studies from the Conservatorio Otorino Respighi in Italy, and his Master's from the UNAM in Mexico City. Throughout his musical career, Javier has studied with Emilio Montoya, Francesco Belli, Roberto Mantilla, and Luis Humberto Ramos.

Four Ladino Folk Songs (2012) for SATB Choir - 8' -written for the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia 1. Durme durme mi alma donzella 2. Ven hermosa ven con mi 3. Camini por altas torres 4. Cuando veo hija hermosa Four Ladino Folk Songs was inspired by a work I wrote for Lara St. John of arrangements of Ladino songs for unaccompanied violin. I was so taken with these songs-with the richness of melodies and harmonies and wide range of emotional expression-that I decided to set four of them for unaccompanied choir. These songs are folk tunes arranged to compliment their texts, some with a gently rocking four-part texture, others with percussive sounds and effects that would be familiar to Ladino folk singers. The mood ranges from playful, to serene, from raucous to quiet despair, just as the original tunes do. I owe a debt of gratitude to the seminal scholarship of Isaac Levy, who transcribed most of these songs in his four-volume "Chant Judéo-Espagnols," a repository of this rich musical heritage from a dying language scattered across Europe, Africa, and Central Asia.Composer David Ludwig's music has been called "entrancing," and that it "promises to speak for the sorrows of this generation," (Philadelphia Inquirer). It has further been described as "arresting and dramatically hued" (The New York Times) and has been noted for "music supercharged with electrical energy and raw emotion" (Fanfare). The New Yorker magazine calls him a "musical up-and-comer" and the Chicago Tribune says that he "deserves his growing reputation as one of the up-and-comers of his generation." He has had performances in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Library of Congress, and has been played on PBS and NPR's Weekend Edition. NPR Music selected him as one of the Top 100 Composers Under Forty in the world in 2011. The New Colossus (2002) for choir - 3' (Lazarus) -SATB choir -Commissioned by Judith Clurman and the TODI Music Festival Choir "The New Colossus" was written for conductor Judith Clurman and the Todi music singers. Ms. Clurman recommended that I set the poem by Emma Lazarus that is at the site of the Statue of Liberty. On reading these words, I was very moved by the sentiment of welcome that Lazarus-herself an immigrant-conveys in the message: "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses..." And it is not just some people that the Statue welcomes, but everyone-even the "wretched refuse." This to me was the true spirit of the United States embodied in poetry: our strength in diversity and tolerance. I wrote the work soon after 9/11, and because of that, the words of the poet were particularly poignant to me. The piece begins in somber unison and remains in that setting, like chant, as the poet compares the Statue of Liberty to the Colossus of Rhodes from ancient Greece. It is not like the Colossus, she notes, in that it is not meant to be an imposing figure but instead the embracing "mother of exiles." At the most famous lines the music opens up into harmony until the end, repeating the words "I lift my lamp, beside the Golden Door"-to the port of entry of a nation of immigrants. Press "Ludwig's The New Colossus began in sober unison. As harmonies evolved to greater dissonance, the singers became more expressive, an effective dramatic device." -The Virginian Pilot Hanukkah Cantata (2007) - 24' (Trad. Hebrew and English) -SATB Choir + soloists, 0000 0130 percussion, organ, strings -Commissioned by the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia -Premiered 2007 at Rodeph Shalom, Philadelphia The Hanukkah Cantata was written for the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia and was funded by the Philadelphia Music Project. I wrote the cantata with a lot of help from some good friends and fabulous musicians, but my first word of thanks has to go to Cantor Dan Sklar who not only assembled and translated the texts for me, but also sang the wonderful Hannukah songs for me to hear. I remembered Dan's voice all the while I arranged these songs. When Choral Arts director Matt Glandorf asked me to write a piece for the holiday, I immediately saw the challenge of writing a new work to commemorate an ancient tradition. It would need to be accessible to an audience whether or not they are familiar with the story of the holiday. I decided to integrate Hanukkah songs in their original Hebrew with the narrative taken from Scripture as translated into English. It was important for me that the piece be set in the "vernacular," so to speak, but to also preserve what is to me beautiful folk music. To that end I kept the music within the boundaries of functional sacred music, rather than attach it to a more abstract musical language or idiom. I also knew the piece would have to be in eight movements. I wanted to style it after the customary practice of including soloists in recitative and arias who would convey the thread of the story poetically. This made the arc of the piece clear to put together. The opening comes with a question from the traditional song "Mi Y'maleil": "who can recount the feats of the holy land?" The next two movements tell of the oppression of the Jews through the eyes of their ruler Mattathias, as well as the rise of his son Judas Maccabeus. After Judas is pronounced "blessed," in the fourth movement, the women of the chorus sing the traditional candle blessings sung while lighting the Menorah. The fifth movement opens the second half of the piece, and details the triumph of the Jews over their oppressors. Here, they find their most holy temple desecrated, and this is where the real heroism takes place. Rather than give up or give in, they decide to completely rebuild and rededicate the temple, replacing every defiled stone anew-even constructing a new altar like the previous one. The music turns to the triumphant "Al Hanisim" to commemorate the occasion. The seventh movement is instrumental dance music, a "dreydl dance" with a narration that is meant to capture both traditional sonorities of Jewish music and incorporate the importance of dance into the cantata. The narrator's part is to tell the how the story happened when the Jews decided to reconstruct the temple and the miracle that occurred when they found only enough oil to light their lamp for one day. They needed enough oil to last for eight days, or enough time to consecrate the next batch of fuel. As it so did, miraculously confirming the merit and holiness of their efforts. The final movement is another arrangement of the song "Maoz Tzur," which is a song that will be familiar to many. The medieval nature of the words conveys the unfortunate glorification of war (a matter I tried to avoid in arranging the text, given the state of our world. I see no reason to exalt the killing of anyone, including the "enemy," "foe," or "heathen.") But the story of the last song, and indeed the story of Hannukah is about oppression, loss, and overcoming that loss to move on with strength and love. The Jews defeat their oppressors and then grieve for their losses. The heroism of the story is in the rebuilding after that loss, and the power of the community unified to help the individuals of that community continue on. They construct a new altar after losing the old one, yet, significantly, it is not a "new" altar insofar as it acknowledges and never forgets the loss. My nephew, Michael Henry Ludwig, would have celebrated his tenth Hannukah this year passed away suddenly and unexpectedly just four days before writing this program note. He was a magnificent kid, always enthusiastic, beaming and smiling when I would bring him close and rub my knuckles on his head. The Choral Arts Society has graciously agreed to dedicate this performance to Michael-the premiere of this work will be in the temple of his great grandparents. Every day I didn't spend with him feels like time lost. I am honored to be able to remember him with this music. Kaddish (2006) -10' (Trad. Hebrew) -0000 4331 + 3 perc SAB choir and tenor so
