Killing Jesus , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 276min
Torture. Infanticide. Brutality. Murder. The world would never be the same. The execution of Jesus was a crime born of the streets, the barracks, the enclaves of the privileged, and the smoke-filled back rooms of religious and political power brokers. Its meaning lives in these places still. It is the most fiercely debated murder of all time. Its symbol is worn by billions of people worldwide. Its spiritual meaning is invoked daily in time-honored rituals. In Killing Jesus, New York Times best-selling author Stephen Mansfield masterfully recounts the corrupt trial and grisly execution of Jesus more than 2,000 years ago. Approaching the story at its most human level, Mansfield uses both secular sources and biblical accounts to bring fresh perspective to the human drama, political intrigue, and criminal network behind the killing of the world's most famous man. ungekürzt. Holocaust Consciousness and Cold War Violence in Latin America (eBook, ePUB)
This book proposes the existence of a recognizably distinct Holocaust consciousness in Latin America since the 1970s. Community leaders, intellectuals, writers, and political activists facing state repression have seen themselves reflected in Holocaust histories and have used Holocaust terms to describe human rights atrocities in their own countries. In so doing, they have developed a unique, controversial approach to the memory of the Holocaust that is little known outside the region. Estelle Tarica deepens our understanding of Holocaust awareness in a global context by examining diverse Jewish and non-Jewish voices, focusing on Argentina, Mexico, and Guatemala. What happens, she asks, when we find the Holocaust invoked in unexpected places and in relation to other events, such as the Argentine "Dirty War" or the Mayan genocide in Guatemala? The book draws on meticulous research in two areas that have rarely been brought into contact-Holocaust Studies and Latin American Studies-and aims to illuminate the topic for readers who may be new to the fields.- Shop: buecher

Gin, Jesus, and Jim Crow (eBook, ePUB)
In Gin, Jesus, and Jim Crow, Brendan J. J. Payne reveals how prohibition helped realign the racial and religious order in the South by linking restrictions on alcohol with political preaching and the disfranchisement of Black voters. While both sides invoked Christianity, prohibitionists redefined churches' doctrines, practices, and political engagement. White prohibitionists initially courted Black voters in the 1880s but soon dismissed them as hopelessly wet and sought to disfranchise them, stoking fears of drunken Black men defiling white women in their efforts to reframe alcohol restriction as a means of racial control. Later, as the alcohol industry grew desperate, it turned to Black voters, many of whom joined the brewers to preserve their voting rights and maintain personal liberties. Tracking southern debates about alcohol from the 1880s through the 1930s, Payne shows that prohibition only retreated from the region once the racial and religious order it helped enshrine had been secured.- Shop: buecher

Lord of the Dark Lake , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 559min
On an isolated Greek island, a young American becomes involved in a deadly and diabolical reenactment of a classic Greek tragedy that culminates in Theseus's underground duel with the Minotaur. Jay Chandler, an American archaeologist excavating an ancient Greek temple, is surprised to find himself invited to a weeklong party on an exotic island paradise owned by eccentric tycoon Alexander Krisos. The annual event - swarmed with European nobility, Texas oilmen, ballerinas and bullfighters, millionaire politicos in exile, Japanese potentates, artists, and gorgeous models - is the sort of orgiastic party many would kill to attend. But no one really expects murder to become part of the festivities…until it does. From the party's start under the bright Aegean sky to the finale in the island's underworld of dark caves, the guests are pulled to their destinies by a force as powerful as any invoked by the Greek gods - and Chandler must confront a Minotaur as deadly as the mythic one. ungekürzt. Show Me a Hero: A Tale of Murder, Suicide, Race, and Redemption , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 769min
Now an HBO miniseries Not in my backyard - that's the refrain commonly invoked by property owners who oppose unwanted development. Such words assume a special ferocity when the development in question is public housing. Lisa Belkin penetrates the prejudices, myths, and heated emotions stirred by the most recent trend in public housing as she re-creates a landmark case in riveting detail, showing how a proposal to build scattered-site public housing in middle-class neighborhoods nearly destroyed an entire city and forever changed the lives of many of its citizens. Public housing projects are being torn down throughout the United States. What will take their places? Show Me a Hero explores the answer. An important and compelling work of narrative nonfiction in the tradition of J. Anthony Lukas' Common Ground. A sweeping yet intimate group portrait that assesses the effects of public policy on individual human lives. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jay Snyder, Cheryl Smith.
