Was the Reformation a Mistake?: Why Catholic Doctrine Is Not Unbiblical , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 511min
Was the Reformation a mistake? In its actual historical context, it hardly seems fair to call the Reformation a "mistake". In 1517, the Church was in need of a spiritual and theological reform. The issues raised by Renaissance humanism - and by the profound corruption of the Church's leaders, the Avignon papacy, and the Great Schism in the 14th and 15th centuries - lingered unresolved. What were key theological problems that led to the Reformation? Theologian Matthew Levering helps listeners see these questions from a Catholic perspective. Surveying nine key themes - Scripture, Mary, Eucharist, Monasticism, Justification and Merit, Saints Priesthood, and Scripture - he examines the positions of Martin Luther and makes a case that the Catholic position is biblically defensible once one allows for the variety of biblically warranted modes of interpreting Scripture. At the same time, Levering makes clear that he cannot "prove" the Catholic case. The book concludes with a spirited response by "mere Protestant" theologian Kevin J. Vanhoozer. ungekürzt. Participatory Biblical Exegesis: A Theology of Biblical Interpretation , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 379min
The interpretation of scripture has depended largely on the view of history held by theologians and exegetes. In Participatory Biblical Exegesis, Matthew Levering examines the changing views of history that distinguish patristic and medieval biblical exegesis from modern historical-critical exegesis. Levering argues for a delicate interpretive balance in which history is understood both as a process that participates in God's creative and redemptive presence and as a set of linear moments. He identifies a split between theological and historical interpretations of scripture beginning in the High Middle Ages, considerably earlier than the emergence of historical-critical methods in the 17th and 18th centuries. Instead, he offers a vision of scripture that is rooted in the exegetical practice of St. Thomas Aquinas and his sources but embraces historical-critical research as well. Participatory Biblical Exegesis provides an original theological basis for critical exegesis. It integrates the work of contemporary exegetes, philosophers, theologians, and historians to provide a compelling vision of biblical interpretation. The book is published by University of Notre Dame Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Don Bratschie. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/088173/bk_acx0_088173_sample.mp3.
