The Devil , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 125min
Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) wrote The Devil in 1889. He wrote an alternative ending in 1909, but the book was only published in 1911. After a year of marriage, Eugene Irtenev's wife, Liza, employs two peasant women. One of them is Stepanida, with whom Eugene had a passionate relationship prior to meeting Liza. Eugene notices Stepanida dancing, and their glances rekindle his desire. Tormented by lust, he thinks of resuming relations with her, but realizes that the affair would cause too much of a scandal. He can't stop thinking about her and decides that she must be sent away. In the alternate version of the ending, Eugene kills Stepanida with a revolver, is imprisoned, and eventually returns home a drunkard. China Marine: An Infantryman's Life After World War II , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 311min
China Marine is the sequel to E. B. Sledge's critically acclaimed memoir, With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa. Picking up where his previous memoir leaves off, Sledge, a young marine in the First Division, traces his company's movements and charts his own difficult passage to peace following his horrific experiences in the Pacific. He reflects on his duty in the ancient city of Peiping (now Beijing) and recounts the difficulty of returning to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, and resuming civilian life haunted by the shadows of close combat. Distinguished historians have praised Sledge's first book as the definitive rifleman's account of World War II, ranking it with the Civil War's Red Badge of Courage and World War I's All Quiet on the Western Front. Although With the Old Breed ends with the surrender of Japan, marines in the Pacific were still faced with the mission of disarming the immense Japanese forces on the Asian mainland and reestablishing order. For infantrymen so long engaged in the savage and surreal world of close combat, there remained the personal tasks of regaining normalcy and dealing with suppressed memories, fears, and guilt. ungekürzt. Trail of Evil: Tau Ceti, Book 4 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 695min
A century and a half after the Martian Separatist Wars and the final defeat of insane terrorist leader El Ahmi, Alexander Moore returns to the stars with the Sienna Madira, a United States Navy supercarrier spacecraft outfitted with advanced FTL and endlessly strange, extremely effective, quantum-based weapons and remote sensing technology. And, of course, he's brought marines and lots of them. These are troops superbly trained for space battle and equipped with advanced powered armor and artificial intelligence backup. Moore's task: hunt down remnant weaponry platforms left by the brilliant, mad artificial intelligence known as Copernicus, the being ultimately responsible for the solar system-wide civil war. Yet Moore is about to uncover something far more sinister: Before his destruction, Copernicus had established multiple mecha-warrior-defended bases with the intent of resuming the destruction of humanity. Worse, an AI presence even more dangerous, evil, and clever than Copernicus may have formed an alliance with something else out there with a similar goal: to wipe humanity from the galaxy forever. But those enemies will have to face a fully armed and equipped military task force led by a resolute general and his soldiers, who know they are all that stand between human life, freedom, and progress - and the total annihilation of mankind. ungekürzt. Dallas He was the beginning of my heart...and the end of it. I was only 15 years old when he claimed it and 20 when he took it with him. They say what is meant to be will find a way. But when you have changed to the point of no return, how can anything ever be the same? Seven years later, Dean Martin waltzed back into my life in hopes of resuming what I had fought so hard to forget, but he was in for a wake-up call. I wanted to forget she ever existed. Dean What I thought was my predestined path was very much an illusion. Living seven years with regret, I realized too late that I was broken, and that I only had myself to blame. I thought love could wait...but it didn't. We'd had it all those years ago, and then I foolishly left it behind. She was all that mattered. She was all there ever was. There was no life without Dallas, no reason...except her. Shadow Tag: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 344min
When Irene America discovers that her husband, Gil, has been reading her diary, she begins a secret Blue Notebook, stashed securely in a safe deposit box. There she records the truth about her life and her marriage, while turning her Red Diary - hidden where Gil will find it - into a manipulative farce. Alternating between these two records, complemented by unflinching third-person narration, Shadow Tag is an eerily gripping listen. When the novel opens, Irene is resuming work on her doctoral thesis about George Catlin, the 19th-century painter whose Native American subjects often regarded his portraits with suspicious wonder. Gil, who gained notoriety as an artist through his emotionally revealing portraits of his wife - work that is adoring, sensual, and humiliating, even shocking - realizes that his fear of losing Irene may force him to create the defining work of his career. Meanwhile, Irene and Gil fight to keep up appearances for their three children: 14-year-old genius Florian, who escapes his family’s unraveling with joints and a stolen bottle of wine; Riel, their only daughter, an 11-year-old feverishly planning to preserve her family, no matter what disaster strikes; and sweet kindergartener Stoney, who was born, his parents come to realize, at the beginning of the end. As her home increasingly becomes a place of violence and secrets, and she drifts into alcoholism, Irene moves to end her marriage. But her attachment to Gil is filled with shadowy need and delicious ironies. In brilliantly controlled prose, Shadow Tag fearlessly explores the complex nature of love, the fluid boundaries of identity, and one family¹s struggle for survival and redemption. ungekürzt.
