In 1979, Ursula Westmacott impulsively left London and her modelling career to join her boyfriend Chris Crocker on board Spero, a 42-foot sailing boat built in 1909 and never modernized - no engine and just a sextant for navigation. The two intrepid sailors headed south for Gibraltar, then Africa, finally crossing the Atlantic to reach Brazil. Westmacott's account of their voyage - hilarious at times, hair-raising at others - forms a remarkable adventure story from a pre-Internet era. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Helen Lloyd. Grow Up and Be a Man is really not so much about my opinion on what "being a man" is, but more of learning from example, from our own experiences, and then setting our own course. Life doesn't come with instructions, and folks are pretty much responsible for writing their own book of "care and feeding", or they're likely to live a life wholly instructed by others. That's not always so bad, and sometimes can be quite good. But...in each life there comes a time when one has to pull up their anchor, unfurl their sails, and chart their own course. It helps to have a compass and a sextant if one wishes to be a pathfinder. There are also lighthouses, beacons, and buoys along the way to guide us on uncharted waters. But ultimately, we find that we are the captain of our own ship. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Gilmore. This charming account of the voyage of two men in a small boat half way round the world from Plymouth to New Zealand in 1953 is a rare insight into a time, not long ago, when sailors had no GPS, electronics, radio or any of the mod cons that we take for granted today. Without lifejacket or a life raft, they 'just took what came along', hand steering all the way, navigating by sextant, hand-cranking their engine and using oil lamps for light at night and for navigation. Sailors will be staggered how primitive conditions were only a few decades ago, even though it was the norm at the time. Part travelogue and part adventure story, the two friends encountered drunken harbor masters, the mafia, the legacy of slavery and lost civilizations in the Pacific. Beautifully written, vivid in its descriptions of the two men's exploits ashore and on board, this quirky and entertaining audiobook will be a fascinating listen for sailors and non-sailors alike. "A compelling story - I feel like I have sailed with them." (Yachting Monthly) ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Matthew Waterson. Republished by Mike Deal and Tim Deal with support from the last surviving escapee, Lyle Bercier, and Lieutenant Commander Morrill's daughters make this republished version of South from Corregidor a one-of-a-kind listen. On the evening of May 6, 1942, hours after US Army General Jonathan Wainwright surrendered all US and Filipino forces on the island of Corregidor and other fortified islands in Manila Bay to the Imperial Japanese Army, 18 US Navy sailors from USS Quail began their daring escape to freedom. Using a 36-foot Navy motor launch, the 18 sailors, led by Lieutenant Commander John Morrill began their 2,000-mile journey through Japanese-infested waters. With only a watch, compass, homemade sextant and a few maps, it was an incredible feat of navigation. Their story is one of great audacity, where the generosity and bravery of the Filipino people, along with sheer luck, played an integral role in the outcome of events. This World War II escape story was originally published as a series of Saturday Evening Post articles in December, 1942, and then as a book in early 1943. The book was written by Lieutenant Commander Morrill less than a year after the escape. This republished version of South from Corregidor is as the Skipper, as Lieutenant Commander Morrill is called by his crew, wrote it. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Wray.
