Cranford, Elizabeth Gaskell's best-known work, is a humorous account of a nineteenth-century English village dominated by a group of genteel but modestly circumstanced women. This is a community that runs on cooperation and gossip, at the very heart of which are the daughters of the former rector: Miss Deborah Jenkyns and her sister, Miss Matty. But domestic peace is constantly threatened in the form of financial disaster, imagined burglaries, tragic accidents, and the reappearance of long-lost relatives. By eschewing the conventional marriage plot with its nubile heroines and focusing instead on a group of middle-aged and elderly spinsters, Gaskell does something highly unusual within the novel genre. Through her masterful management of the novel's tone, she underscores the value and dignity of single women's lives even as she causes us to laugh at her characters' foibles. Charles Dickens was the first of many readers to extol its wit and charm, and it has consistently been Gaskell's most popular work. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Wanda McCaddon. This is the second collection of poetry by WB Yeats, first published in 1893, with a new foreword by poet and actor Tim Dalgleish. This is a beautiful collection of poetry that translates the 2,000-year-old mythos of Ireland into words that inspire and touch the mind, body, and spirit of any listener. This audio narration includes music between the poems which underscores and enhances the mood of romance and thoughtfulness. The rose stands for Ireland, but also for Yeats unrequited love Maud Gonne. The poems are romantic and symbolic and once read or listened to, root themselves in one's psyche. The famous "Lake Isle of Innisfree" is included, but essentially, Yeats intended this poetry to be experienced as a collection as presented here in its original published format. The scent of mystical poetic genius rises from every word. This is the Celtic Twilight brought to life. Picture credit: freeimages.com/Scott Schopieray ungekürzt. Language: English. In June 2015 Alberto Manguel prepared to leave his centuries-old village home in France's Loire Valley and reestablish himself in a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Packing up his enormous, 35,000 volume personal library, choosing which books to keep, store, or cast out, Manguel found himself in deep reverie on the nature of relationships between books and readers, books and collectors, order and disorder, memory and reading.  In this poignant and personal reevaluation of his life as a reader, the author illuminates the highly personal art of reading and affirms the vital role of public libraries. Manguel's musings range widely, from delightful reflections on the idiosyncrasies of book lovers to deeper analyses of historic and catastrophic book events, including the burning of ancient Alexandria's library and contemporary library lootings at the hands of ISIS. With insight and passion, the author underscores the universal centrality of books and their unique importance to a democratic, civilized, and engaged society. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Arab Revolutions that began in 2011 reignited interest in the question of theory and practice, imbuing it with a burning political urgency. In Revolution and Disenchantment Fadi A. Bardawil redescribes for our present how an earlier generation of revolutionaries, the 1960s Arab New Left, addressed this question. Bardawil excavates the long-lost archive of the Marxist organization Socialist Lebanon and its main theorist, Waddah Charara, who articulated answers in their political practice to fundamental issues confronting revolutionaries worldwide: intellectuals as vectors of revolutionary theory; political organizations as mediators of theory and praxis; and nonemancipatory attachments as impediments to revolutionary practice. Drawing on historical and ethnographic methods and moving beyond familiar reception narratives of Marxist thought in the postcolony, Bardawil engages in "fieldwork in theory" that analyzes how theory seduces intellectuals, cultivates sensibilities, and authorizes political practice. Throughout, Bardawil underscores the resonances and tensions between Arab intellectual traditions and Western critical theory and postcolonial theory, deftly placing intellectuals from those traditions into a much-needed conversation.

UPDATE: In response to listener feedback, this audio edition of The Red Book has now been revised to exclude footnotes in the reading. An audio edition of the famous Red Book text and essay. The Red Book, published to wide acclaim in 2009, contains the nucleus of C. G. Jung's later works. It was here that he developed his principal theories of the archetypes, the collective unconscious, and the process of individuation that would transform psychotherapy from treatment of the sick into a means for the higher development of the personality. As Sara Corbett wrote in the New York Times, "The creation of one of modern history's true visionaries, The Red Book is a singular work, outside of categorization. As an inquiry into what it means to be human, it transcends the history of psychoanalysis and underscores Jung's place among revolutionary thinkers like Marx, Orwell and, of course, Freud."The Red Book: A Reader's Edition features Sonu Shamdasani's introductory essay and the full translation of Jung's vital work in one audiobook. The Red Book is skillfully narrated by Mike Fraser. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mike Fraser. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/198222/bk_acx0_198222_sample.mp3. Leron's Song is a story that underscores the difficult and all too prevalent problem of bullying. The narrative focuses on a young man, Leron, who often day dreams and "lives" in his own world of music. He constantly hears it, dreams it, and like a shadow, it follows him wherever he goes. Throughout the story he is bullied frequently by a group of older kids, which keeps him from ever expressing his true genius. He consistently suppresses his God given ability because he feels inadequate. One of the turning points, as the story moves along, is the destruction of an important composition of his. This awful incident really devastates Leron. Although, this unfortunate incident occurred, which felt like a punch in stomach. Leron has a revelation about himself and it sends him headlong into his greatest musical adventure. Granted, bullying is most certainly the primary theme of this comic; this story is also about the unwavering human spirit. Keep Dreaming is definitely a pause resister and an amazing story for all ages. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Joseph A. Batzel.
