One of the most remarkable figures of the Renaissance, Michel de Montaigne was a brilliant French philosopher and statesman whose work directly influenced René Descartes, Friedrich Nietzsche, Isaac Asimov and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He was a humanist and a sceptic, with an insatiable and wide-ranging curiosity. In 1571, on his 38th birthday, he withdrew from public life and retired to the library in his castle tower, where he assembled a body of work that is still highly relevant today. This collection contains more than 100 chapters, written in a surprisingly accessible manner. He weaves together personal anecdotes, serious intellectual argument, and quotes from classical Greek and Roman philosophers. While this style was criticized during his lifetime as being overly self-indulgent, he has since been credited with popularizing the essay as a respectable literary form. Using his own experiences and judgement as a lens through which to view the world, his essays cover such disparate topics as war horses, cannibalism, and ancient customs; as well as heavyweight ideas such as war, death, religion and truth. ungekürzt. Hal Moore, one of the most admired American combat leaders of the last 50 years, has until now been best known to the public for being portrayed by Mel Gibson in the movie We Were Soldiers. In this biography, we finally learn the full story of one of America's true military heroes. A 1945 graduate of West Point, Moore's first combats occurred during the Korean War, where he fought in the battles of Old Baldy, T-Bone, and Pork Chop Hill. At the beginning of the Vietnam War, Moore commanded the First Battalion of the Seventh Cavalry in the first full-fledged battle between US and North Vietnamese regulars. Drastically outnumbered and nearly overrun, Moore led from the front, and though losing 79 soldiers, accounted for 1,200 of the enemy before the communists withdrew. This battle pioneered the use of "air mobile infantry" - delivering troops into battle via helicopter - which became the staple of US operations for the remainder of the war. He later wrote of his experiences in the best-selling book We Were Soldiers Once...and Young. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Johnny Heller. Georgia O’Keeffe is a slightly odd case in the story of American art. She became famous very early, thanks to the efforts of her patron, lover, and eventual husband Alfred Stieglitz, who, in addition to being a leading modern movement photographer, was a very active promoter of cutting edge modernism in the United States. Having been a leading figure in the New York art world, she eventually withdrew from that to become the central presence in a new kind of regionalism, focused not on the Midwest but New Mexico and, in particular, on the art scene in and around Santa Fe. There is a museum dedicated to her work in downtown Santa Fe, plus a separate research center, and visitors can also make tours to her house and studio in nearby Abiquiu. No American woman artist enjoys or has enjoyed such a degree of either posthumous or present celebrity. In fact, it may even be possible to say "no American artist whatsoever" - not even such supposedly legendary figures as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. ungekürzt. Language: English. The following audiobook contains a collection of recorded events, which seek to explain the reason for my secession from the Bierton Strict and Particular Baptist Church. Bierton is a village near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. The Bierton Church was a society, in law, called Strict and Particular Baptists, formed in 1831 and was presided by the son of John Warburton of Trowbridge, Wiltshire. It and became a Gospel Standard listed church in 1983. My succession from this church was not a separation from any other Strict Baptist church just the Bierton Church. I was not the subject of church discipline but rather I withdrew from the communion as a matter of conscience. And according to our church rules practice I am still a member. Conscience free: My voluntary leaving of this society leaves me free in conscience to relate my experiences, being bound only by the Law of Christ and not the rules of that society. The date of my secession was the 26th of June 1984. This is written believing this may help any persons finding themselves in similar situations and to point out the ignorance of some religious people. ungekürzt. Language: English. The vivid, fast-paced account of the siege of Khe Sanh told through the eyes of the men who lived it. For seventy-seven days in 1968, amid fears that America faced its own disastrous Dien Bien Phu, six thousand US Marines held off thirty thousand North Vietnamese Army regulars at the remote mountain stronghold called Khe Sanh. It was the biggest battle of the Vietnam War, with sharp ground engagements, devastating artillery duels, and massive US air strikes. After several weeks of heroic defense, the besieged Americans struck back in a series of bold assaults, and the North Vietnamese withdrew with heavy losses. Last Stand at Khe Sanh is the vivid, fast-paced account of the dramatic confrontation as experienced by the men who were there: Marine riflemen and grenadiers, artillery and air observers, platoon leaders and company commanders, Navy corpsmen and helicopter pilots, and a plucky band of US Army Special Forces. Based on extensive archival research and more than one hundred interviews with participants, Last Stand at Khe Sanh captures the courage and camaraderie of the defenders and delivers the fullest account yet of this epic battle. ungekürzt. When Yvette, a New York model for White Rain shampoo, first appeared in Sunset Boulevard (1950), she could not have imagined that her own death would be as bizarre as Norma Desmond's gigolo, Joe's. After roles in Short Cut to Hell (1957) and Reform School Girl (1957), Yvette's fate cast her into dubious signature roles in Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958) and Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959). Years passed, bit parts led to no parts, and Yvette gradually withdrew from the world. Forgotten by nearly everyone, she was last seen alive in 2010. In 2011, her mummified body was discovered in her home, and forensic scientists determined that she had been dead for as long as a year from heart disease. John O'Dowd now reveals the secret recordings she made in her last years that reveal in her own voice the truth about her life and career. Hear her retell behind-the-scenes stories of the show business that brushed her aside, her dashed dreams, and her realized hopes. Her voice, warm-hearted and still resonating with humor, tells the inside story no one heard before her grisly death. Language: English. Narrator: Yvette Vickers. Falling in love changes everything. Three bad things I learned this year: People you trust lie, even parents. That hot guy, the one who's totally into you, might not be the one. Things are not always how they appear. Three good things I learned this year: Best friends are always there for you, even when they're far away. That other hot guy, the one who remembers your birthday, just might be the one. Oh, and things are not always how they appear. Anna Sanders expected an anonymous (and uneventful) senior year until she crossed paths with rich and sexy Jack Kyser and his twin sister, Lucy. Pulling Anna into their extravagant lifestyle on the Gulf Coast, Lucy pushed Anna outside her comfort zone, and Jack showed her feelings she'd never experienced - until he mysteriously withdrew. Anna turned to her internship at the city paper and to her old attraction to Julian, a handsome local artist and rising star, for distraction. But both led to her discovery of a decades-old secret closely guarded by the twins' distant, single father. A secret that could permanently change all their lives. ungekürzt. Language: English.
