God Sleeps in Rwanda: A Journey of Transformation , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 561min
This memoir tells the story of Dr. Joseph Sebarenzi, whose parents, seven siblings, and countless other family members were among 800,000 Tutsi brutally murdered over the course of 90 days in 1994 by extremist Rwandan Hutu - an efficiency that exceeded even that of the Nazi Holocaust. Outbreaks of ethnic violence had been occurring in Rwanda since colonial times when the Belgians ruled the region. As a child, Sebarenzi twice hid with his mother during episodes of killing, narrowly escaping with his life. When he was a teenager, his father sent him away to school in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, telling him, “If we are killed, you will survive.” When the genocide erupted in 1994, Sebarenzi was lucky enough to be outside of the country. When Sebarenzi returned to Rwanda after the genocide, he was elected president of parliament. About three years later, he learned of a plot to assassinate him, leading him to once again flee the country in a daring escape. This African country is not alone in having had a shameful history of ethnic violence. God Sleeps in Rwanda demonstrates how horrific events can occur when the rest of the world stands by and does nothing. It also shows us how the lessons of Rwanda can prevent future tragedies from happening all over the world. Listeners will be inspired by the wisdom of a man who has every right to be bitter and hateful but chooses instead to live a life of love, compassion, and forgiveness. Dr. Sebarenzi and his wife Liberata have two sons and three daughters. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology, a master’s degree in International and Intercultural Management, and a PhD in International Human Rights Law. ungekürzt. Language: English. Journey into Darkness: Genocide in Rwanda , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 861min
In July 1994, Thomas P. Odom was part of the U.S. Embassy team that responded to the Goma refugee crisis. He witnessed the deaths of 70,000 refugees in a single week. In the previous three months of escalating violence, the Rwandan genocide had claimed 800,000 dead. Now, in this vivid and unsettling new book, Odom offers the first insider look at these devastating events before, during, and after the genocide. Odom draws on his years of experience as a Defense Attaché and foreign area specialist in the United States Army to offer a complete picture of the situation in Zaire and Rwanda, focusing on two U.S. embassies, intelligence operations, U.N. peacekeeping efforts, and regional reactions. His team attempted to slow the death by cholera of refugees in Goma, guiding in a U.S. Joint Task Force and Operation Support Hope and remaining until the United States withdrew its forces forty days later. After U.S. forces departed, Odom crossed into Rwanda to spend the next eighteen months reestablishing the embassy, working with the Rwandan government, and creating the U.S.-Rwandan Demining office. Odom assisted the U.S. Ambassador and served as the principal military advisor on Rwanda to the U.S. Department of Defense and National Security Council throughout his time in Rwanda. His book candidly reveals Odom's frustration with Washington as his predictions that a larger war was coming were ignored. Unfortunately, he was proven correct: the current death toll in that unfortunate country is close to three million. Odom's account of the events in Rwanda illustrate not only illustrate how failures in intelligence and policy happen, but also show that a human context is necessary to comprehend these political decisions. ungekürzt. Misdiagnosis and Mistreatment: Your Doctor’s Advice Is the Number One Cause of Death , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 214min
Death exposes the dangerous state of affairs in our "sick-care system" and the dangers of the current medical/pharmaceutical complex. Doctors causes over 800,000 deaths and millions of life-threatening complications each year. Or, as Harvard Professor Lucian Leape testified before Congress, it’s equivalent to six jumbo jets falling out of the sky every day!Whether it is from taking the billions of prescriptions for medications for high blood pressure or high cholesterol, for arthritis or insomnia, for depression or ADHD, or the thousands of unnecessary surgeries taking place every day in hospitals throughout the country, listeners will be presented with the horrifying facts to awaken them from the nightmare of today's prevailing medical system and be encouraged to discover alternatives.Research reveals how over 63 percent of these deaths and injuries from the medical system were found to be preventable and over 75 percent of the conditions patients were being treated for could be cured without medication or surgery! As Dr Sheen shares, “After 50 years of involvement in health and wellness, it is clear to me that each person must play an active role in maintaining their optimal functioning as a human being, physically, emotionally, and mentally. We need to have the most up-to-date information available about our minds and bodies, which we must actively assert to protect our overall health. It is not about trusting or mistrusting the medical establishment, but it is being aware that sick-care is a business with rules and regulations which often prove to be more to their advantage than to ours. We each need to understand the realities of the pressures those in the medical profession have and the near-impossible task of continually staying at the cutting-edge of the many diverse disciplines of medicine, science, and technology and become an active and informed participant in maintaining our health and avoiding dangerous medical intervent ungekürzt. Leading Up: How to Lead Your Boss So You Both Win , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 579min
Eight true stories show that leaders today aren’t just bosses, they’re self-starters who take charge even when they haven’t been given a charge. Upward leaders get results by helping their superiors lead. They make sure that good ideas don’t die on the vine because a boss’s understanding doesn’t reach down deep enough into the organization. Upward leadership assures that advice arrives from all points on the corporate compass, not just from the top down. And it applies at every level: Even CEOs need to learn about leading up because they ultimately answer to their boards. In Leading Up, Michael Useem offers instructive accounts of this vital and unexplored facet of leadership. Drawing on the extraordinary experiences of real people, Useem shows us what happens when those not in charge rise to the challenge, and also what happens when those who should step forward fail to do so:Civil War generals openly disrespected and frequently misinformed their commanders in chief, with tragic consequences for both sides.COO David Pottruck learned how to lead with his superiors at Charles Schwab & Co. in order to radically change Schwab’s core business. Had he been able to convince his superiors of the dire situation in Rwanda, United Nations commander Roméo Dallaire might have prevented the genocide that claimed 800,000 lives. The CEOs of CBS, Compaq, and British Airways concentrated on leading down when they needed to lead up to their boards, too. The result: All three were fired.U.S. Marine Corps general Peter Pace reconciled conflicting priorities while reporting to six bosses with varying agendas by keeping all of them informed and challenging them when necessary. Mount Everest mountaineers admitted they might have protected themselves and others from harm during a fateful ascent if only they had questioned their guides’ flawed instructions and decisions. Even in government, repr ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: James Lurie. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/rhau/000063/bk_rhau_000063_sample.mp3. Chaplains of the Militia: The Tangled Story of the Catholic Church During Rwanda's Genocide , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 158min
The 1994 Rwandan genocide was the last great bloodletting of the century that came to define organized mass killing. 800,000 Tutsis were murdered by their Hutu countrymen, ordinary citizens joining in the killing alongside militia and army. The violence was driven by incendiary politicians and generals. But one global institution stands accused of complicity in the mass killings and protecting some of the murderers to this day. The Catholic church should have been at the forefront of moral opposition to the massacres. Instead it was virtually silent as churches across Rwanda were turned into human slaughterhouses, compromised by an archbishop closely allied with the politicians behind the genocide. Some clergy courageously resisted the killers but their bishops were not there to back them. Other priests and nuns joined the murderers, overseeing the torture and slaughter of citizens who had turned to the church for refuge. After the violence ended, the Vatican spirited guilty members of the clergy out of the country, and over time, quietly worked them into parishes across Europe. Chaplains of the Militia is the extraordinary story of those priests accused of complicity in genocide. Chris McGreal takes us from Rwanda in 1994, where he stood among the bodies at one of the many massacres in churches, to modern-day France in pursuit of a priest notorious during the genocide for wearing a gun and selecting victims for the machete-waving militia. He investigates the roots of the Catholic church's complicity in the ideology that underpinned the mass killings, confronting bishops and priests with a past some would rather forget. And, in an echo of the scandal over paedophile priests, he exposes the Vatican's continued protection of clergy with blood on their hands. Dr. Ann McLannly blames herself for her niece’s tragic death. And after her mother dies, this young doctor volunteers with an international aid organization for a mission in Rwanda. Pressed into a grueling work schedule with limited facilities, she has little time to adjust. Still, she forges relationships with the remarkable people she meets and finds herself drawn into a relationship with a priest, who introduces her to a Catholic orphanage that needs a physician to care for the growing number of orphans. It all seems the perfect escape until she finds herself in the middle of the Rwandan genocide where Hutus murder 800,000 Tutsis in a matter of 100 days. As the horrors unfold around her, and her colleagues flee for home, Ann remains in Rwanda to honor her contract and to help her new friends. She is also painfully aware that she is not yet ready to face her family in the US. As Ann struggles to care for her patients under desperate circumstances, she discovers that the priest she has grown so fond of is complicit in the genocide conspiracy. Cut off from the outside world, Ann and her companions embark on a harrowing journey to a refugee camp in Tanzania, joining the flood of Rwandans frantic to escape the killing. There, Ann is reunited with the blue-eyed surgeon who recruited her. Love blossoms as the conditions within the camp deteriorate. Ann and her colleagues struggle to remain neutral in an increasingly convoluted world as they live with the brutal reality of deciding who lives and who dies. Ann’s outrage grows when they discover that the ethnic conflict continues in the camp. As the threats become personal for Ann, she realizes she must take a side.Mission Rwanda is a work of fiction but is based on historical facts, as well as Zink’s own experience in the field. An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action for the Twenty-First Century , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 868min
“As Albert Camus wrote, the doctor’s role is as a witness - to witness authentically the reality of humanity, and to speak out against the horrors of political inaction… The only crime equaling inhumanity is the crime of indifference, silence, and forgetting.” - James Orbinski In 1988, James Orbinski, then a medical student in his 20s, embarked on a year-long research trip to Rwanda, a trip that would change who he would be as a doctor and as a man. Investigating the conditions of pediatric AIDS in Rwanda, James confronted widespread pain and suffering, much of it preventable, much of it occasioned by political and economic corruption. Fuelled by the injustice of what he had seen in Rwanda, Orbinski helped establish the Canadian chapter of Mdecins Sans Frontires (Doctors Without Borders/MSF). As a member of MSF he travelled to Peru during a cholera epidemic, to Somalia during the famine and civil war, and to Jalalabad, Afghanistan. In April 1994, James answered a call from the MSF Amsterdam office. Rwandan government soldiers and armed militias of extremist Hutus had begun systematically to murder Tutsis. While other foreigners were evacuated from Rwanda, Orbinski agreed to serve as Chef de Mission for MSF in Kigali. As Rwanda descended into a hell of civil war and genocide, he and his team worked tirelessly, tending to thousands upon thousands of casualties. In 14 weeks 800,000 men, women and children were exterminated. Half a million people were injured, and millions were displaced. The Rwandan genocide was Orbinski’s undoing. Confronted by indescribable cruelty, he struggled to regain his footing as a doctor, a humanitarian and a man. In the end he chose not to retreat from the world, but resumed his work with MSF, and was the organization’s president when it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. ungekürzt. Language: English. Homo Erectus: The History of the Archaic Humans Who Left Africa and Formed the First Hunter-Gatherer Societies , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 109min
Most scientists believe the evolution of humans has a history as long as life itself. Anatomically modern humans and all other life that has existed on the planet first came about from the single-celled microorganisms that emerged approximately 4 billion years ago. Through the processes of mutation and natural selection, all forms of life developed, and this continuous lineage of life makes it difficult to say precisely when one species completely separates from another. In other words, scientists still debate when a human became a human rather than the ancestor species that came before.Around 1.8 million years ago, a third species of Homo appeared in the fossil record. H. erectus would have shared the landscape for a time with H. habilis and H. rudolfensis, but the fossils of H. erectus are not limited to eastern and southern Africa. Instead, they are found across Africa and parts of mainland and insular Asia. This is the first species of Homo to be found outside Africa (Rightmire 1993).Features of H. erectus suggest an evolution toward modern humans, and the features that separate H. erectus from the other Homo species are found in the skull. The size of the brain was approximately 900 cc, making it larger than the brain size of H. habilis. H. erectus would not have the largest brain capacity of the Homo genus during its existence, with the emergence of H. heidelbergensis approximately 800,000 years ago. The larger brain size may not matter much when the size of the brain is considered with the size of the body, which also increased. While the facial features of H. erectus would have made them noticeably different if they were alive today, their postcranial morphology may have been similar to modern humans. A key difference is the density or thickness of the bones; in H. erectus the limb bones are more robust, but otherwise they appear very similar to modern humans. The length of the hindlimbs in relation to the arms is similar to modern hu ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman.
