Fintan O'Toole was born in the year the revolution began. It was 1958, and the Irish government-in despair, because all the young people were leaving-opened the country to foreign investment and popular culture. So began a decades-long, ongoing experiment with Irish national identity. In We Don't Know Ourselves, O'Toole, one of the Anglophone world's most consummate stylists, weaves his own experiences into Irish social, cultural, and economic change, showing how Ireland, in just one lifetime, has gone from a reactionary "backwater" to an almost totally open society-perhaps the most astonishing national transformation in modern history. Born to a working-class family in the Dublin suburbs, O'Toole served as an altar boy and attended a Christian Brothers school, much as his forebears did. He was enthralled by American Westerns suddenly appearing on Irish television, which were not that far from his own experience, given that Ireland's main export was beef and it was still not unknown for herds of cattle to clatter down Dublin's streets. Yet the Westerns were a sign of what was to come. O'Toole narrates the once unthinkable collapse of the all-powerful Catholic Church, brought down by scandal and by the activism of ordinary Irish, women in particular. He relates the horrific violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which led most Irish to reject violent nationalism. In O'Toole's telling, America became a lodestar, from John F. Kennedy's 1963 visit, when the soon-to-be martyred American president was welcomed as a native son, to the emergence of the Irish technology sector in the late 1990s, driven by American corporations, which set Ireland on the path toward particular disaster during the 2008 financial crisis. A remarkably compassionate yet exacting observer, O'Toole in coruscating prose captures the peculiar Irish habit of "deliberate unknowing," which allowed myths of national greatness to persist even as the foundations were crumbling. Forty years in the making, We Don't Know Ourselves is a landmark work, a memoir and a national history that ultimately reveals how the two modes are entwined for all of us.

Das Londoner Trio mit Ihrem Debut Album auf Angular Records. Ein Pop-Punk-Rock Mix der den Spagat zwischen alten Bands wieX-Ray Spex & Slits zu neuen Bands wie Long Blondes oder Pipettes schafft!London three - piece, WETDOG are set to release their debut album on Angular Recordings. 'Enterprise Reversal', released on CD and vinyl, was recorded over the last few months and features an astonishing twenty one tracks, clocking in at just forty five minutes, including forthcoming single 'Alibi'. Formed a couple of years ago with a line up of Rivka Gillieron (vocals & guitar), Billy Easter (bass) and Sarah Datblygu (drums), WETDOG have toured with the likes of Pete and the Pirates, The Long Blondes, Good Shoes, Subway Sect and The Gossip. Counting Geoff Travis and John Kennedy amongst their fans, they've invariably been likened to the Raincoats, Slits, Fall and Young Marble Giants, but their skeletal, clunk-punk clatter doesn't really sound like anything else around. WETDOG play the following live dates in May and June, more dates will be announced over the Summer. TRACKS: 1. Train-Track, 2. White Kid Leather, 3. Sumpy Torso, 4. Send a Delegate, 5. 8 Days, 6. Alibi, 7. Magnet Face, 8. Cow Hide, 9. Nancy Riley, 10. Steal a Car, 11. New Partee, 12. Dirty Outside, 13. Guide Time, 14. Evicted, 15. Shit Day, 16. Napolean's Plan, 17. Totally Compulsive, 18. Eric Hage of the Metroland says of the Sense Offenders: Albany band the Sense Offenders play ballsy, macho rock that is lead by the vocal growl and songwriting sensibilities of the undeniably talented Tom McWatters. 'Razor's Edge' opens up the album with an ominous rumble that builds into a booty shaking, hard rock scrum upheld by the slashing power chords of guitarist Eric Halder and the precision clatter of drummer John Brodeur. But it's McWatters' feral, bluesy howl that truly marks this territory as serious business. 'Loaded with my Love' mixes things up a bit by offering more of a rock&roll, not hard rock, attack that lands somewhere closely in the neighborhood of 1970's Elvis Costello or Rockpile. Mostly though, this album is supreme 'cock rock', finely executed with balls to match. Few people could drop lines like 'it's cold outside so come in soon/join the revival in my bedroom'(from 'Stiff Breeze') and be taken seriously. But McWatters, with that dirty howl and all of that heavy artillery behind him (and some righteous organ), pulls it off quite well. Sure, this is dead serious 'rawk', but one also gets the sense that the Sense Offenders are having a whole lot of fun living it up like Free or Bad Company did back in the day.-Erik Hage, Metroland, Albany NY Our bio: The Sense Offenders are a favorite on the Albany club scene, thanks to the strong soulful vocals of Tom McWatters, and a commitment to performances that leave rooms full of tired, sweaty bodies in their wake. Behind McWatters is a group of sought-after, multitasking musicians: his brother Matt McWatters, a talented songwriter and singer in his own right, on bass, the fiery guitar leads of Eric Halder, who also leads his own classic rock influenced trio, Charmboy, Terry McClain, leader of rock misfits Guiltless Cult, on keys, and John Brodeur, of Maggie Mayday and Helctor on Stilts, on drums. The songs of the Sense Offenders' self titled debut CD range from aggressive chest beaters like 'Razor's Edge' and 'Rebel Anthem' to funk flavored rockers like 'Stiff Breeze' and 'Lord Humongous', with the occasional anthemic ballad 'Dear Mrs Whitman', and Elvis Costello influenced pop tune, 'Loaded with my Love', thrown in for good measure. The Sense Offenders came together in August 2005, and we released our self title debut disc in september 2007. We've since shared the stage with bands like Cracker, Mohair, Super 400, and the Fireflies. You're next. If you can handle the stiff breeze, the Sense Offenders want to give it to you, hard.
