Alan Lomax: A Biography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1230min
The remarkable life and times of the man who popularized American folk music and created the science of song. Folklorist, archivist, anthropologist, singer, political activist, talent scout, ethnomusicologist, filmmaker, concert and record producer, Alan Lomax is best remembered as the man who introduced folk music to the masses. Lomax began his career making field recordings of rural music for the Library of Congress and by the late 1930s brought his discoveries to radio, including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Burl Ives. By the 1940s he was producing concerts that brought white and black performers together, and in the 1950s he set out to record the whole world. Lomax was also a controversial figure. When he worked for the U. S. government he was tracked by the FBI, and when he worked in Britain, MI5 continued the surveillance. In his last years he turned to digital media and developed technology that anticipated today's breakthroughs. Featuring a cast of characters including Eleanor Roosevelt, Leadbelly, Carl Sandburg, Carl Sagan, Jelly Roll Morton, Muddy Waters, and Bob Dylan, Szwed's fascinating biography memorably captures Lomax and provides a definitive account of an era as seen through the life of one extraordinary man. ungekürzt. Stories of Our Lives: Memory, History, Narrative , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 588min
In Stories of Our Lives, Frank de Caro demonstrates the value of personal narratives in enlightening our lives and our world. We all live with legends, family sagas, and anecdotes that shape our selves and give meaning to our recollections. Featuring an array of colorful stories from de Caro’s personal life and years of field research as a folklorist, the audiobook is part memoir and part exploration of how the stories we tell, listen to, and learn play an integral role in shaping our sense of self. De Caro’s narrative includes stories within the story: among them a near-mythic capture of his golden-haired grandmother by Plains Indians, a quintessential Italian rags-to-riches grandfather, and his own experiences growing up in culturally rich 1950s New York City, living in India amid the fading glories of a former princely state, conducting field research on Day of the Dead altars in Mexico, and coming home to a battered New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Stories of Our Lives shows that our lives are interesting, and that the stories we tell - however particular to our own circumstances or trivial they may seem to others - reveal something about ourselves, our societies, our cultures, and our larger human existence. ungekürzt. Walking the Choctaw Road: Stories from Red People Memory, Hörbuch, Digital, 218min
In Walking the Choctaw Road, Tim Tingle reaches far back into tribal memory to offer a deeply personal collection of stories woven from the supernatural, mythical, historical, and oral accounts of Choctaw people living today. “Oklahoma” comes from the Choctaw word “Okla Homma,” meaning “Red People”. In this, his first collection of stories, acclaimed storyteller and folklorist Tim Tingle tells the stories of his people, the Choctaw People, the Okla Homma. For years Tim has collected the stories of the old folks, weaving those tales into his own stories, mixing traditional lore with stories from everyday life. Thus, Walking the Choctaw Road has a mixture of contemporary stories of Choctaw people living their lives right now, historical accounts passed down from generation to generation, and stories arising from beliefs and myths. In one of the 11 stories, Tim tells how audiences are always wanting to hear stories about the Indian Wars, so he tells about his own Indian War, which he calls “Archie’s War”, the 20-year war between his father and himself, which ended in hard-won respect and love for them both. In another, he lets a five-year-old boy tell us a magical, tragic tale about “The Trail of Tears”, when the U.S. government forcibly removed the Choctaw people from their homeland to Oklahoma. And in another, a Choctaw preacher tells about his grandmother, a healing woman, who has a beyond-death relationship with her protector dog, Shob. Language: English. Narrator: Tim Tingle. How to Catch a Bogle , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 431min
As a bogler's apprentice, 10-year-old Birdie has faced down plenty of monsters lurking in the chimneys, wells, and other dark places of Victorian London. She serves as bait, singing sweetly to lure the bogles out so her master, the well-seasoned Go-Devil Man Alfred Bunce, can kill them with his trusty spear. Enter the wealthy folklorist Miss Eames, who is determined to find more scientific ways of drawing out the monsters, and Birdie fears that her livelihood may be threatened by the well-meaning lady. Meanwhile, orphans are disappearing and a bogle is suspected, but Alfred and Birdie discover something even more sinister at work. The first in a projected trilogy, this book treats readers to a lively, engaging story with an endearing protagonist at its center. Capable, forthright, and street-wise, Birdie fairly leaps off the page with pluck, intelligence, and courage. Historical details are woven in to ensure that readers are firmly ensconced in Victorian London, where bogles may be waiting to snatch unsuspecting children, but they are certainly not the only danger to be had. The well-paced story builds to an exciting climax as each bogle encounter raises the stakes and Birdie and Alfred face a decision that will change their lives. While this particular adventure is wrapped up nicely, readers will be delighted that the stage is set for future bogling exploits. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mandy Williams. El Dorado: The Search for the Fabled City of Gold , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 69min
Alongside the famous Lost City of Atlantis, perhaps no mythological city has captured the imaginations of people or been the source for exploration quite like El Dorado, the fabled city of gold that the Spanish believed was located somewhere in South America. The origins of the Spaniards’ belief in the existence of the mythical city was based on their rumors surrounding the tribal chief of the Muisca in present-day Colombia; the Spanish heard that his initiation included covering himself with gold dust and diving into Lake Guatavita. Of course if the chief could cover himself in gold, he must have access to a lot of it, and around this figure the myth of El Dorado sprang up. Naturally the belief in the existence of El Dorado propelled it from being merely a city to an entire empire itself, and this spurred several journeys in the 16th century, including one by Francisco Pizarro’s half brother, Gonzalo, and another by Sir Walter Raleigh. Although none of these journeys actually discovered such a place, they resulted in plenty of lives lost and a lot of exploration of the heart of South America. Moreover, despite the fact none of the explorers actually found El Dorado, the rumors and journeys only cemented the belief that such a place existed, and El Dorado was actually located on maps made by several European nations for centuries. As folklorist Jim Griffith once put it, "El Dorado shifted geographical locations until finally it simply meant a source of untold riches somewhere in the Americas." In fact it would not be until about the early 19th century that explorer Alexander von Humboldt disproved El Dorado’s existence, at least in the spot it was assumed to be located for over 200 years. ungekürzt. Nighthoots and Morningsongs
Nighthoots and Morningsongs is a compilation of twenty-three on location recordings made in peoples homes, living rooms, public meeting places and live concerts. The people on this compilation are from the mountains of southwestern North Carolina. The music is old-time Appalachian, bluegrass, Spiritual, love songs, one classical guitar masterpiece, one showtune ('Over the Rainbow') and some old standards like 'we'll Meet Again' (Some Happy Day). The recordings were made by a professional folklorist with thirty-five years of experience using state of the art audio equipment. Covering a true diversity of musical styles, this CD does not strive to present a listless 'text book' look at an Appalachian community and it's music, but shows honestly what Appalachian folks are singing and performing in a digital age with mass communications. As such, the listener gets a full range of genres from Elizabethan balladry to traditional jazz, classical, Morris dance music and a local acoustic band 'Irons in the Fire' that writes songs of social protest and odd humor. This is a truly one of a kind release that is fun to hear while presenting a living musical snapshot of life in a contemporary Appalachian region.- Shop: odax
