Once a Soldier , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 152min
Once a Soldier takes place in Washington, DC, and recounts the story of LTC Marco Domenico, a 39-year-old Delta Force operative. During his extraction from an unnamed country teetering on the brink of insurrection, the helicopter in which he is a passenger crashes. Marco suffers severe injuries - ones that could prevent his ever walking again. His sister, Guiliana Leoni, is unable to leave Italy in time to wait for his arrival at Walter Reed. She calls her former college roommate, Ay'ana Levy, and wakes her from a dream in which she is exploring the Ethiopian highlands with a handsome man. When Ay'ana realizes the seriousness of Guiliana's call, she agrees to wait for Marco's arrival at the medical center despite her belief their mutual antipathy won't provide much support. Marco and Ay'ana have never gotten along, and after Marco's successful surgery and subsequent recovery, their animosity toward one another escalates. Guiliana is helpless to stem the deteriorating situation. As the story progresses, Marco faces obstacles in his efforts to learn to walk again, ones that also challenge his view of himself as a man. He realizes no matter how mobile he becomes, his army career has changed, and he must accept those changes and make plans for the future. His progress in his efforts to overcome his physical injuries and regain his confidence as a warrior are remarkable, but the situation with Ay'ana Levy continues to degenerate to the level of internecine warfare. At the urging of his physical therapist, Marco makes an effort to meet Ay'ana halfway, and the two begin to build a better relationship - one that holds the potential for a brighter future for them both. ungekürzt. Rain Dogs , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 553min
The year is 1976, and the first shots are being fired in the narcotics and human-trafficking war. Colt Freeman and his partner, Snyder, want only to preserve their small piece of the marijuana trade. Like a modern-day Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, they do their work with proficiency and stealth and, when necessary, deadly force.Hundreds of miles away, a law enforcement task force patrols the border between the United States and Mexico, the desolate no man’s land that separates misery and prosperity. They seek to curb the unspeakable violence that feeds off the ever-growing number of illegal immigrants who find themselves at the mercy of ruthless “coyotes” they have paid to guide them in their desperate crossing.Farther southwest, an elegant hacienda is nestled behind protective walls at an isolated ranch on the coast of the Sea of Cortez. Beyond the well-guarded gates, Miguel Zamora has placed himself at the center of a powerful circle of corrupt Mexican officials on the cusp of establishing ties with Columbian drug cartels. Zamora, driven by avarice and steeped in paranoia, begins to seize control of his world with a singular and savage brutality that threatens to unleash a firestorm of bloodshed on both sides of the border. Snyder and Colt decide to cash in on one last marijuana harvest in one final run down the coast before leaving their outlaw lives behind them. But when their meticulously-planned scheme comes undone, it forces them into a rash and hazardous escape from the law and directly into the crossfire of an internecine narcotics war that no one had seen coming. ungekürzt. A History of Ancient Egypt in 20 Artefacts , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 99min
Includes descriptions of 20 important artifacts, including the Sphinx, the Rosetta Stone, King Tut's funerary mask, and many more Africa may have given rise to the first human beings. And Egypt probably gave rise to the first great civilizations, which continue to fascinate modern societies across the globe nearly 5,000 years later. From the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria to the Great Pyramid at Giza, the Ancient Egyptians produced several wonders of the world, revolutionized architecture and construction, created some of the world's first systems of mathematics and medicine, and established language and art that spread across the known world. With world-famous leaders like King Tut and Cleopatra, it's no wonder that today's world has so many Egyptologists. What makes the accomplishments of the Ancient Egyptians all the more remarkable is that Egypt was historically a place of great political turbulence. Its position made it both valuable and vulnerable to tribes across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and Ancient Egypt had no shortage of its own internecine warfare. Its most famous conquerors would come from Europe, with Alexander the Great laying the groundwork for the Hellenic Ptolemy line and the Romans extinguishing that line after defeating Cleopatra and driving her to suicide. Despite the fact Ancient Egyptian history happened so long ago and covered an immense span of time, Egyptologists are able to learn an incredible amount about different periods through examining the surviving texts now preserved in museums throughout the world and in the many temples and tombs in Egypt. Egyptologists know that the language of ancient Egypt went through many phases and was written in a variety of different scripts, such as the well-known hieroglyphic script and the cursive versions known as hieratic and demotic. ungekürzt. For example, historians still debate precise chronologies of dynasties, theological nuances, and architectural details. The city of Heliopolis was one of ancient Egypt’s most important religious centers, the focus of the civilization’s solar cult, and a destination for pilgrims for nearly 3,000 years. Indeed, since Egyptian civilization represented some fundamental human concepts, a study of their culture can be useful when trying to understand many other pre-modern cultures.Part of the reason Egyptian history is so intriguing is because it is so enigmatic. The imposing monuments, the strange practice of mummification, the picturesque form of writing, the colorful art, and other aspects of Egyptian life all make for an inspiring and somewhat baffling culture. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of ancient Egyptian civilization was its inception from the ground up, as the ancient Egyptians had no prior civilization which they could use as a template. In fact, ancient Egypt itself became a template for the civilizations that followed. With that said, some minor elements of ancient Egyptian culture were, indeed, passed on to later civilizations. Forgery and Counterforgery: The Use of Literary Deceit in Early Christian Polemics , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1527min
Arguably the most distinctive feature of the early Christian literature, writes Bart Ehrman, "is the degree to which it was forged." The Homilies and Recognitions of Clement; Paul's letters to and from Seneca; Gospels by Peter, Thomas, and Philip; Jesus' correspondence with Abgar, letters by Peter and Paul in the New Testament - all forgeries. To cite just a few examples. Forgery and Counterforgery is the first comprehensive study of early Christian pseudepigrapha ever produced in English. In it, Ehrman argues that ancient critics - pagan, Jewish, and Christian - understood false authorial claims to be a form of literary deceit, and thus forgeries. Ehrman considers the extent of the phenomenon, the "intention" and motivations of ancient Greek, Roman, and Jewish forgers, and reactions to their work once detected. He also assesses the criteria ancient critics applied to expose forgeries and the techniques forgers used to avoid detection. With the wider practices of the ancient world as backdrop, Ehrman then focuses on early Christian polemics, as various Christian authors forged documents in order to lend their ideas a veneer of authority in literary battles waged with pagans, Jews, and, most importantly, with one another in internecine disputes over doctrine and practice. In some instances a forger directed his work against views found in another forgery, creating thereby a "counter-forgery." Ehrman's evaluation of polemical forgeries starts with those of the New Testament (nearly half of whose books make a false authorial claim) up through the Pseudo-Ignatian epistles and the Apostolic Constitutions at the end of the fourth century. Shining light on an important but overlooked feature of the early Christian world, Forgery and Counterforgery explores the possible motivations of the deceivers who produced these writings, situating their practice within ancient Christian discourses on lying and deceit. ungekürzt.
