Vala Yarlen is one of the Barren -- an infertile female ostracized from the rest of Kelderan society with others of her kind. So when she's given the opportunity to join the new colony on a human-occupied planet, she jumps at the chance for a new start. The only downside is that she has to serve General Thorin Jarrell for the duration of the journey. The cool, distant male goes out of his way to show his disdain of her. But for the chance at freedom, Vala endeavors to endure. Thorin Jarrell is the general in command of the Kelderan colony transport ship. After years of concealing his true parentage and working his way through the ranks of the army, Thorin will do anything to make his mission a success. What he didn't count on was to find the female assigned to clean his quarters unconscious on the floor. The reason why throws his life into disarray. Yet as Thorin tries to help Vala recover, the ship encounters trouble. Will they ever reach Jasvar alive? And if so, will Thorin and Vala find a way to be together despite the mountain of obstacles standing in their way? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Emma Wilder, Jeremy York. William Logan has been called "the most hated man in American poetry" and the most dangerous poetry critic since Randall Jarrell. Beginning with an exploration of some of Robert Frost's least-known poems, these essays consider Ezra Pound's letters, T. S. Elliot's metaphysical lectures, the lightness of Elizabeth Bishop, and the civil tongue of Richard Wilbur, finding in poetry a language that lasts beyond the petty conventions of the age. ,pWhile criticism of contemporary poetry is often pallid, diplomatic, and full of evasive judgments, Logan is willing to raise hackles, to be cheerfully controversial. The often eloquent criticism in Desperate Measures, which views poetry from one end of the last century to the other, is a passionate defense of poetry in an unpoetic time. This book is published by University Press of Florida. ungekürzt. A musician, documentarian, scholar, and one of the founding members of the influential folk revival group New Lost City Ramblers, Mike Seeger (1933-2009) spent more than fifty years collecting, performing, and commemorating the culture and folk music of white and black southerners, which he called "music from the true vine." In this fascinating biography, Bill Malone explores the life and musical contributions of folk artist Seeger, son of musicologists Charles and Ruth Crawford Seeger and brother of folksingers Pete and Peggy Seeger. Malone argues that Seeger, while not as well known as his brother, may be more important to the history of American music through his work in identifying and giving voice to the people from whom the folk revival borrowed its songs. Seeger recorded and produced over forty albums, including the work of artists such as Libba Cotton, Tommy Jarrell, Dock Boggs, and Maybelle Carter. In 1958, with an ambition to recreate the southern string bands of the twenties, he formed the New Lost City Ramblers, helping to inspire the urban folk revival of the sixties. Music from the True Vine presents Seeger as a gatekeeper of American roots music and culture, showing why generations of musicians and fans of traditional music regard him as a mentor and an inspiration. ungekürzt. These stories span over 30 years of writing time. In themselves, they each represent that struggle that goes on inside a writer to bring something out of the inchoate darkness within the subconscious, and shove it out into the light for all to see who care to look. Because of the time span these stories also represent something of a learning curve. The oldest short story in this collection is Purple Heart. I wrote that on a typewriter. Somewhere I still have the yellowed manuscript pages, held together with a rusting paperclip, that I carried from a failed marriage into an uncertain future and from one job and one apartment to another. Some of these were written on my first desktop PC. The youngest ones made the transition from PC to laptop. So the learning curve is not only the craft but the tools. Now I’m sending these strange children out into the world to see what others might make of them. You’ll make your own judgment about them, based on what you yourself bring to the work. Perhaps it’s presumptuous of me to tell you a little about their genesis, but putting one word after another is what I do, and besides, I’m saying goodbye. These stories will never be quite all mine again. The Visit came out in a rush, it is pretty much as it was written in that two-hour stretch in the spring of 1996 - 23 years ago. Soldiers of the War was modified a little more over the years because I was never quite happy with the ending. The Ball Turret Gunner was inspired by a poem written by Randall Jarrell, which is one of perhaps three poems I actually like. One Step at a Time was written for a short story workshop taught by Kevin Keck. Cutters just sort of came to me; I was thinking about a no-nonsense Navy fighter pilot as a character and then started wondering about the guy’s father, a no-nonsense surgeon. Mona Lisa had a similar thought process; the model, the artist, and what’s in a smile? The Good ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Burkhalter.
