When ABC News' Good Morning America asked its viewers to write essays describing true-life experiences, the network never imagined receiving more than 20,000 pages of inspiring stories. After a panel of best-selling authors and editors chose three finalists, America was given the opportunity to vote on which aspiring author's story would be published. This audiobook is the result of the most ambitious search ever conducted to publish an extraordinary life story. Farah Ahmedi is born into the world just as the war between the mujahadeen and the Soviets reaches its peak in Afghanistan. Bombs are falling all over her country, and her native Kabul is swelling with thousands of people looking for homes and jobs. When Farah steps on a land mine on her way to school, her world becomes much smaller than the dreams and hopes of her heart. The Story of My Life: An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky recounts an epic journey. It deftly interweaves a childhood in Afghanistan, where the classrooms are naked chambers with only chalkboards on the walls, with an American adolescence, where teenagers struggle to decide whether to try out for school plays and where to go to college. Thanks to a number of good people who crossed her path at critical moments, Farah is thriving. She is actively enjoying the realization of her childhood dreams. Farah is living proof that not only can the human heart endure, it can also thrive. The Story of My Life is our new great American memoir. Language: English. Narrator: Masuda Sultan. 1. Prelude Carlos, Tak and I played one beautiful summer morning at Mt Fuji&nbsp,Studio where we could see the sublime outline of the mountain. (Check the picture out on CD itself) Although we recorded another good&nbsp, version that night, we realized this morning version has some certain&nbsp, lucky omen just like that particular early morning. Carlos intuitively named the song 'Prelude'. 2. Spring Carlos has practiced Indian Raga music for 25 years. The motif of this song comes from Raga methodology. Raga is an improvisation based live music with a certain motif dedicated to and honoring a cosmic phenomenon like a sunrise, a full moon or some emotion. I think one of Raga's secrets is the overtone's resonance produced by the instruments. The unlimited variations of these resonances take the audience into a deeper universe. In accordance with Raga methodology, Zino plays with chords and tempers with tensions and groove to express a story of spring, revealing fresh sunlight, snow melting, birds moving, insects, greens or a thunder storm.&nbsp, 3. Rain Track I recall the morning in the living room at my country house, between Tokyo and Mount Fuji, Carlos and I were playing with 'My Favorite Things'. We were inspired by those well known progressions and composed this song. It was a couple of days before our first recording sessions and this tune became our favorite thing. We cannot live without rain..... coming from clouds down to the earth and flowing to streams, rivers, oceans and finally up to the sky again.&nbsp, So many different passages, like reincarnations... 4. Moonlight Gaze Carlos and I composed this song at my house on a summer afternoon. I composed some rough progressions, he answered by setting the melody and then I responded. This song has a tropical feeling. My wife said it took her to&nbsp,a beach and I envision a full moon while I play it. Carlos named it, 'Moonlight Gaze.' He emphasized the difference between ' Moon Gaze'and 'Moonlight Gaze.' 5. Riverman 'Riverman' is a Carlos coined tribal word. He brought this motif and melody, and I added a chord progression and rythm. I played bass line and rhythm cutting with a guitar. Tak added engaging rhythm accents. A song appeared with a Latin feeling with Calypso, Reggae and Ska overtones. Riverman means a man who belongs to a river tribe. Actually, we often gather at our friend Shiro's (cover art designer) riverside house to jam with other musicians. Rivermen is somehow biographical. 6. Holy Mountain Carlos proposed playing this song at Zino's Mt. Fuji Studio around twilight. According to him, the original scale is from the Marwa Raga and has to be played at sunset. The musical motif of this song is related with&nbsp,Lord Shiva, the Hindu God of creation and destruction.&nbsp,Shiva also represents Mount Kailas, the Hindu holy mountain in the Himalayas. Tokuko sings the name of Shiva and Parvati (Shiva's consort) in the Mantra, 'Om Nama Shivaya.' This song is dedicated to the Japanese holy mountain, Fuji, because it triggered this magical recording. 7. Cadences One evening&nbsp,in our early Zino days, Carlos proposed the idea of this night song, before&nbsp,a concert. He suggested the key of the tune to be D, to square the title and the musical feeling. Carlos, Tokuko and I improvised on the stage.&nbsp,It was the inception of Cadences. We didn't have Tak yet and much of an audience either. In the following years we played it many times with a pianist and an Indian tabla player. Finally we were able to perfect this song with Tak. Travelling and meeting musicians, friends and audiences, we grew with this piece of music. &nbsp,7. All songs are arranged by ZINO Simply and directly recorded with seven Shure dynamic microphones and one Rode condenser microphone without using loops or dubbing. Carlos Guerra --- bansuri Junji 'Scan' Shishino --- guitar Takuya Abe --- drums Tokuko Nakamura --- tampura and voice on songs 2, 6 and 7 Recorded and Engineered by Takuya Abe at Mt Fuji Masuda House on July 3, 4, August 1, 2, September 26, 27, 2007 with the excellent assistance of Shiro Yamazaki, Ryoji Masuda and Yukiko Shishino. Disc Mastering by Takuya Abe.
